I remember coming here when I was a child— it’s next to the Plunge and my mom would take me to get a burger and a shake after swimming classes. This place is part of my childhood! I’m vegetarian these days, but this place still offers a lot of other things. Great fries and shakes. The inside is maintained and pretty much the same as I remember from way back when! I LOVETHAT!(I only wish the Plunge looked the same as it used to!)

This place is definitely a dive! But, like other dives I’ve been to, the food is pretty decent. I came here because I was craving a fried fish burger and was told they’re pretty good here. Unfortunately, they were out so I ended up with a turkey burger, which was good. I’ve had better, but I wasn’t unhappy. I agree with another reviewer about the sanitation practices of the staff. A woman rang up my order, swiped my card, handed me a pen and then proceeded to add cheese to a few burgers and sautee some mushrooms without washing her hands. Eww. I get it. This is NOT a 5-star type of place, BUT, at the very least, I expect proper food handling practices. She should just know better. Period. The fact that I am not the first to comment on this, lets me know this is common behavior.

My coworkers and I grabbed lunch here today. We originally wanted to order online but the app was down. So we called in the order. Easy peasy. The point has many good restaurants and this is definitely one of them! I’m a lactoovopescovegetarian so I was glad to have a myriad of choices. I went with the deluxe garden burger and it was excellent! I’ve had garden burgers at other burger joints and they’re always bland and nothing to write home about. This one was flavorful and dressed with sautéed mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, onion and avocado. Oh and I chose American cheese. My only complaint is that the avocado was just a tiny sliver. Other than that I give it two thumbs way up!

Updated review for lunch. This is a great place if you’re really craving a milk shake. They are thick and sweet and have a few dozen flavors — relying on the syrups(Toriani?) they used for flavored espresso drinks or Italian sodas. I got the coconut shake and it was decent. For entrée, I got the Southern Fried Chicken burger($ 6.95), a thin, well-seasoned, crispy chicken patty with avocado, swiss cheese, jalapeño, and pickles. It had lettuce and tomato too but they were cold, which gave an awkward temperature contrast with the hot chicken patty. Not bad for the price though, so 3 – 3.5 stars. For really large, high-quality, beefy burgers Little Louies is probably better — their Raiders and Niner burgers are both excellent.

I like supporting local vendors but this place is pretty beat up and run down and can use a good cleaning and their staff can benefit from proper methods to prevent cross contamination(I noticed the cook taking orders on a pen and pad and immediately touched raw meat without washing her hands). They don’t have timers and use their judgement in cooking their food; I was a bit skeptical but the five burgers I ordered came out perfect! The french fries and onion rings, again there’s no timer but they were crispy and done right. Their hamburgers were nice and juicy, wrapped well. They give you a healthy portion of fries and onion rings.

Very sad this place has fallen apart. French fries had a nasty taste I could not even eat them .no greeting when I walked in two young ladies were occupied in a personal conversation that was more important than me wanting to order. I should of left. I wish I would of left. This place was so good. What happened

The two times I have been here, I have been pretty happy! Their menu has a wide variety of burgers and sandwiches to choose from. It’s been difficult for me to decide lol! I have been going for the regular cheeseburger, fries and a soda. The burger is very delicious, I highly recommend trying those out first. I’ve also ordered the onion rings — which are huge! A bit too greasy for my liking though. The fries are great too, but try asking them to cook it crispy as they can become soggy pretty quickly. Customer service is good, the girls are all very sweet and hardworking. I haven’t seen any of them ever standing still. I have yet to try the rest of the items so I will have to come back for sure.

Man!!! I travel A LOT for work. This burger is up there with Matt’s in Minneapolis, home of the juicy lucy. Ordered the double bacon cheese burger. Excellent flavor and very juicy. Get extra napkins because you will need them after licking the wrapper clean. Must check this place out!!!

Point Richmond is so different than the other Richmond neighborhoods. It’s like going back in time to 1950’s small town America. The Great American Hamburg fits right into that small town vibe. The building feels like it has been here for a long time, and it has. They have been flinging burgers at this location for more than 30 years, which must mean they are doing something right. The first thing that drew us in to this burger joint was a sign on the side of the building advertising pies. I had not even noticed that they had hamburgers. S went in and got a slice and apple and berry to go. He came back to the car and mentioned the burgers looked good. So I bookmarked it for a return visit. We went back to try the burgers after the lunch rush. S had a double burger well done. I ordered a cheese burger with bacon. I asked for rare, however, it was already on the grill and it was medium. I liked the burger. I read other reviews that mentioned the burgers are thin; I did not think they were. I had enough leftovers to take home. We also shared an order of fries. I really wanted to try the well reviewed onion rings. We ate inside, it was close to closing time and there were not many other customers inside. Several people did come in to pickup orders. The burgers were good, the ambiance was wonderful.

The burgers are good. The garlic fries are great. However the hair in the food was neither. Both female cooks and the cashier have long brown hair, which is the length and color of the strand found in my honey’s burger. They gave him his money back but the response to the question of wearing hair nets was, «yeah we’re supposed to wear hats so…». WTF?!! Just GROSS and never again.

I have to honest I am super bias about this place. I use to come here for lunch after going to the plunge when I was a little girl. I ordered what I use to always get which was a burger. For me the burger brought back so many special memories. I will defiantly come back again.

This is for their online ordering. I placed an order at 12:01pm hoping that my food would be ready in the 15 minutes it says on the webpage. Got to great American burger 20 min later, waited in line and when I finally got to the register to pay, they haven’t even started making my order. Four people ahead of me got their food before I did and I placed my order ONLINE. This happened not once, not twice, but 3 times. Oh and I got my food at 12:42pm. 41 minutes to make a tuna sandwich ?!? I’m done with this place

Curious about this place for a while, I finally had the chance to give it a try. So glad I did. The small place is popular and has the interior feel of a country store. The burger list seemed a bit long but very creative combos. They also serve some non-burger options. My burger came with a toasted bun and was very tasty! What a nice surprise! The fries were hot and crispy. They also have extensive milkshake flavor list. They miss a star due to a dated interior but on a nice day, you can eat outside on the front table. Parking is easy on nearby streets.

So most people come to Point Richmond for the food. Tucked between some government buildings and labs is a quaint little downtown area with a large tunnel leading to a small beach. At the mouth of the tunnel, lies a historic building frequented by surfers, fishermen, and your average joe. They gather here, at the mouth of the sea, to do one thing and one thing only. Eat some of the best burgers that exist in the East Bay Area. Now unfortunately, the GAHP Co. no longer serves breakfast and is strictly on a brunch/lunch/early dinner schedule seven days a week. Those in the know, get there right when they open at 10AM. Otherwise, you could be waiting a while. That’s not to say that the service is slow or tardy; far from it. But the weekday lunch rush sees so many people crammed into such a small space, that it’s more or less standing room only! The food is worth it regardless of when you arrive. The menu is simple and written in chalk up above the grill with a smaller chalkboard detailing the specials closer to the door. Options exist for the meat-lover and beef adverse alike, but the basic burger is simple and full of flavor thanks to a quintet of toppings: lettuce, tomato, onions, mustard, and mayo. You can add and subtract as you like, but I’ve found that regardless of what you put on there, you will be able to taste the entirety of your burger without it being unbearably dry or slathered in sauces. If you are the sauce boss, though, the GAHP Co. has a mindblowing array of alternative/additional sauces available to everyone. The burgers are not the only thing going for this little place either. The pie is equally good and the shakes are thick and creamy like they’re supposed to. Onion rings, fries, and other standard burger companions all exist. The standard hamburger with fries and a drink will run you ~$ 9, more if you want bacon or the rare California Chicken Club. But those nine bucks will unlock a taste unrivaled by any other burger in the area.

Nice burger joint in Point Richmond. Consistently good hamburgers, made the way you want them. I don’t eat here as often as I want because this ain’t exactly health food, but when I feel like a burger I come here. Every cog in the machine needs a little grease now and then. Gets crowded during lunch but the staff works well together to serve everyone quickly and efficiently. Double bacon cheeseburger and fries, and all is right in the world again.

Hamburger $ 4.50, the burger comes with the usual, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and mayo. It’s a rather big burger. California chicken sandwich $ 6.95 French fries $ 2.25 Overall this is a good place to grab a quick bite in the area, they have outdoor picnic tables and directly across the street is a park. As for the food, its OK however it gets pretty soggy I would only order to go if I’m going nearby otherwise the bun will not survive by the time you get home additionally the lettuce is iceberg lettuce and you only get a couple of pieces on it. I understand this is a Hamburger & Pie Co. not a health conscious hamburger joint so for that I still come here when I am having my fatty days and craving a hamburger. Customer Service, the girls working here are efficient and fast! Note: prices as of 3÷25÷15

This cool, old school burger joint has been on my mental list for years and today Alan and I had lunch here. It’s crowded w/a diverse group of patrons, from workers of all sorts to retired folks like us and young ‘uns. The line never seems to end, but everyone gets served. There are seats inside at a bar by the front windows, at the counter and at one table for 4. Outside is at least one picnic table and there are benches across the street in the park. Some people get takeout and others eat in. We were in the latter group and scored a place at the 4 top, which we shared w/a couple of young working folk. The vibe is relaxed and friendly, no metaphorical pushing or shoving. Alan ordered a hamburger and some fries w/o salt. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger and iced tea. I wanted my burger rare, but there was no hope of that, given the level of busyness. After not too long a wait we got our burgers, fries and iced tea. The burgers, while not rare or close to it, were juicy and good. The fries were good, although I just read in someone else’s review that the onion rings are better. The iced tea tasted freshly made w/no chemical taste at all, much better than across the way at Up&Under Pub. The food was reasonably priced, but the experience of the meal was priceless.
