My teaching method comes from a deep educational background of classical music, theory, and jazz. And all that time an influence of rock and blues served my playing and approach. Having received a bachelors degree in studio music and jazz from the University of Miami, I bring an importance on fundamentals and knowledge in my teaching style. I work with my students in a way that patiently informs and encourages them to keep getting better! And have fun while doing it…
Beginners: Are always welcome! I have a tried and true method to get you strumming chords and learning songs within a few weeks.
Intermediate: I can help you make the most of what you already may know. My intermediate students have lots of «AHA!» moments. I can help you learn some harder material and/or get better at improvising or playing a simple blues solo. Many of my intermediate students enroll in band workshops to put their skills onto a real stage.
Advanced: Many gigging/lifetime guitarists come to me to take their playing to the next level. Deeper technique, connection, tone, and theoretical understanding. Advanced theory, reading, composition, transcription, and mindset/attitude are all things my advanced students get help with.

«Heulitt represents a scarce breed of guitarist these days: He can play complicated fusion and straight-ahead rock. He can navigate incredibly difficult single-note lines… and still possess soulful, bluesy bends and killer vibrato…» — Guitar Player Magazine, January 2015
Matthew’s cutting edge guitar blazes with the art-rock band MoeTar and has played on hundreds of San Francisco Bay Area releases. He has shared the stage with Carlos Santana, Sting, Taj Mahal, Mickey Hart, and Sammy Hagar to name just a few. In April 2015 Guitar Player magazine published Matthew’s guitar lesson «Pentatonic Paradiddles». Alongside being a consummate performer, Matthew is a true teacher in his ability to give students a strong foundation and understanding to achieve whatever musical goals they may have. Many local gigging guitarists come to Matthew to take their playing to the next level, and many beginners take advantage of his patient and thoughtful approach to learning.
