New Boswell Brewery and Tap Room

I stopped in here based on Unilocal reviews. I tried a flight of the their Sky Island, Irish Red, Land Slide Double IPA, and their seasonal yoga pumpkin ale. The pumpkin ale was better then I expected. Not to much pumpkin in it, just a mild taste. I am surprised at what gets thrown into beer now these days but better or worse, some of them are not that bad depending on your taste. The other beers were good. I liked the DIPA the best. Staff is friendly. I walked in as the place was opening and I had the whole place to myself. They have a food menu but I was not sure if they were serving food so early in the day as it was just me and the bartender. Also, I did not ask about food. The patio area is really nice. The location is a little hard to find as it is the single story building attached to the multi story building in the corner. I actually walked by the entrance twice before I noticed it off to the side. If you see the rock wall in the corner, walk towards it and look for the entrance and you are right there.

Straight up good beer and friendly service. A nice patio deck allows outdoor consumption and pitchers are available too!

Beer was okay, but the guys working there were yelling obnoxiously. Left half my beer and walked out.

Need a reason to visit Historic Richmond and not just blow on past it while traveling down I-​70? New Boswell Brewery is your reason. Do yourself a favor and detour South on 27 for a short jaunt to get to this gem.
Rarely do I go to a brewery, order a flight, and like
they bring me. I can honestly say, this was my most recent experience at New Boswell. I am generally not an IPA fan, and I even liked their version. That’s saying something, folks.
Try the McFly Irish Red — it’s named after the owner’s dog (Shamus McFly). The Red and the Brown are both real crowd pleasers. I took the McFly to book club and the Brown to a neighborhood beer fest, and now I get requests for them from friends whenever I am headed toward Richmond. I love the Maelstrom a little too much as well — super dark and deeee-​licous. Their seasonals have also proven growler worthy in our household with a special nod to their Gingerbread… yum. Sounds like I need a 12-​step program, huh?
Don’t let the ‘start up cost’ of their Growlers throw you — it is totally worth it to take this liquid gold home with you. I am now the proud owner of *2* growlers and an insulated growler carrying contraption (affectionately known as Scuba Steve in our house hold) just for when I am passing by.
Do yourself a favor and check this place out. It’s groovy. There is a large rock-​in-​retaining wall outdoor courtyard for warmer times. No loud TVs blaring, no distractions. Just bring a good conversationalist and enjoy.

I’ve now got a reason *not* to blow by Richmond at 75 mph as I cruise between Indy and Columbus. I saw a billboard on I-​70 for another winery/​brewery and thought to myself, that can’t be good. Unilocal confirmed by suspicion but also guided me to this place.
We walked in and were surprised by the setting which was ‘posh’ — for a brewery… they even had Bath and Body Works lotions in the bathroom. We visited on Christmas Eve, and the place was pretty quiet, but that allowed us to snag stools at the bar. The bartender gladly poured us samples of everything and apologized for only having four beers on tap. They had a pub crawl the weekend before that cleared out their inventory.
We enjoyed everything we tasted: Cream Ale, Bier de Garde, something I can’t remember, and a gingerbread porter. The cream ale was the star of the show and we had a pint at the bar, and took a bullet to go. I’d say their cream ale is far and above Sun King’s which I find requires a 98 degree day for me to really enjoy.
This place was a pleasant surprise and I’ll definitely be back. My only complaint — it was so quiet in there… they need some tunes.

Awesome selection of local brews and access to local pizza. Win! A lack of signage makes finding the place a bit challenging. Out door space is perfect for sunny days but you’ll have to supply your own music – no speakers outside.

We stopped in for drinks and enjoyed it. It is great to see a quality microbrewery in Richmond. It is in a good location, next to Ghyslain in the Depot District.

Didn’t like this place when it first opened. It was kind of just an empty space, but much has changed. They don’t really have any food; you just order pizza, which is less-​than-​perfect and will hopefully change. What they do have is a lot of personality now. The girls working there are really nice and make you want to come back. It’s still new and not fully «discovered» I think, and perhaps once it’s wall-​to-​wall people it will lose it’s charm, but for now it’s a great place to enjoy a quiet artisinal brew.
Wait, if I write a good review and all of you start going… dammit.

I didn’t really have any expectations going to New Bowell’s for the first time, so that’s probably why I came away more impressed than not. The space itself is great. I love the Depot section of Richmond and I think it is really moving in the right direction. I love anything that isn’t brand new on National Rd and part of a chain. The beer selection is small but good variety. I tried the cream ale and biere de garde. Both had good flavor and for $ 3.50 a pint definitely cheaper than I figured (compared to other tap rooms in larger cities I’ve been). They had 6 on tap and the selections change periodically. They have a flight option which lets you taste all 6 for I think $ 8.00. I came at night so the Menu was Joe’s Pizza not Ghyslain. There are plenty of tables and a large couch with TV in one corner. Definitely a great hangout spot for any size crowd. I’m definitely looking forward to coming here more often!

I came here with a few people and we all had a really great time. I had the double I think and it was really good so I had a couple more. We got complimentary bread and butter for the whole table and everyone was able to find a beer that tickled their fancy. A couple of us also ordered a bowl of white chili which was heavenly. The waitress forgot one of them but then made up for it by taking it off the check and getting it right away. I like where this place is and especially where it’s headed. I’ll be back here again next time I’m in Richmond for sure.

I had a work outing here and had a great time. I’m probably not the best person to rate a place such as this because I’m really not a beer drinker. However, the beer & chocolate pairings are quite fun and something I’ve never seen done before.
We got a few salads, appetizers, and soups and everyone enjoyed what they had.
We were the only table for the first 30 minutes or so, and I found the service to be very friendly.
I don’t really see myself grabbing a meal here, but it’s a fun place to hang out with a group of friends.

Always happy to see new places opening in Richmond. New Boswell’s has potential. I drank raspberry wheat beer, I actually enjoyed it, keep in mind that I am not a beer connosieur, so for my simple beer tastes, it was adequate. They have «beer flights» which give you a sampling of their six beers, and then includes one full glass of your favorite of the six. You can also do a beer flight paired with it’s recommended chocolate, something I will try next time.
The menu is the Ghyslain menu. This needs to be changed. I had a croque monsieur sandwich with my beer, not exactly pub fare. They need more beer-​pub-​bar appropriate selections, finger foods, tapas, whatever. Just not the Ghyslain menu, that’s lazy and un-​inspired.
The space itself is small, bland and spartan. Needs some work.
For a «soft» opening, it was fine. I will return and hope they improve the food menu and the décor.
