We invite you to join us for a delicious meal. We offer a wide variety of traditional American fare made from fresh, quality ingredients. From our famous chicken parmesan to our juicy burgers and hand-​breaded onion rings, Patrick Henry’s Pub & Grille offers something for everyone.

Our Pub & Grille resides in the Patrick Henry Inn. This pre-​Civil War Inn, which stands on Historic Church Hill, features a restaurant, an English pub and garden patio. The casual dining atmosphere provides a comfortable dining experience for all fellow patriots.

Got an event coming up? We accommodate private parties, business luncheons, delivered box lunches, rehearsal dinners and walk-​ins.

Located just a block from St. John’s Church, the location of Patrick Henry’s famous speech, «Give me liberty, or give me death,» we prefer to think of the establishment as a revolution in food, fun and spirits. We hope to see you soon!

Some friends and I came here just because I’ve seen it in passing and wanted to try it. I came in through the side door which basically led you into the basement bar area. I had to go up a few sets of stairs to get to the main dining area where I met my friends. It was pretty empty in there on a Friday night. A few people scattered between the floors. The waitress was really nice, she came over right away and got my drink order. I got the Patrick Henry chicken club, the chicken breast was grilled and sliced kind of thin. It was tasty. I also got onion rings, 5 onion rings to be exact. They were a nice size and good but I found myself wishing I had gotten fries like my friends. I would come here again and try something else as the burger my friend got looked really good.

This place was a little quieter for a Friday night than I expected, but it was still a nice dining experience. I ordered the fish and chips. My fish was a little bland, but I did enjoy a taste of my partner’s burger and my friend’s chicken sandwich. Their meals were very tasty but they only allowed me a little bite so I had to retreat back to my fish. I will plan on trying them out again as I really did like the way the burger was tasting. It tasted like a real backyard cookout burger and that’s what I love! So I know what to get next time and maybe with that experience I can bring it up one more star.

Have been eating there for years. Used to live in the Carriage House. Never miss Tuesday Burger Day. I think it’s $ 4.50. Love the patio in good weather. Great place to hang out. Best kept secret on the Hill.

I’m here from out of town. Was super excited to try this place out! We got a few drinks, which were delicious. I was very impressed with the coziness of the place.
Sadly, though, that’s when the smoking started. If you come here, plan on making a trip to the dry cleaners, and washing your hair. :(Talk about gross! I know I’m not from here, and maybe things are just different… But I can’t believe they allow smoking inside, still. Would rate them five stars, if not for the smoking… Super cute little basement pub. :(

Excellent food and drinks. Great patio. Dining room if you want a fancy meal or a large party. Downstairs pub if you’re just grabbing some drinks or a quick bite. If you’re turned off by a pub atmosphere then go upstairs, to the patio, or eat early. This is our favorite place and a great selection in the neighborhood.

Smoky, stale interior in this historic building, but a rather nice outside patio with umbrella tables where we had a late dinner. Food was great, really enjoyed my salmon sandwich on a fresh toasted roll. Nice choice of sides. I opted for pesto penne, which was a great accompaniment. Decent beer selection and good service. Unfortunately they allow people to smoke on the deck. Otherwise a great dinner. Not a good place for young children. Primarily a college crowd.

My friends and I have been going to the downstairs bar at Patrick Henry’s for years now, it’s our favorite bar in RVA. They always play good music, the drinks are reasonably priced, and the food is pretty good, though I personally haven’t tried much of their menu. They only have about 6 beers on tap, but they make it count with really great selections. All of the bartenders/​bouncers are cool and not surly.
P Henry’s is great because it’s got a neighborhood vibe — you’ll see the same people in there often and it’s easy to strike up a convo with people around the bar. Things rarely get wild, even when it’s crowded; it’s a good chill atmosphere. It can get smoky after 10pm, but they have pretty good ventilation and it only gets really thick if a ton of people are smoking at once.
If you’re looking to rage out and get rowdy at a bar, this is not your place. If you want a good time with good people and positive vibes, it’s a great spot to be!

A very unassuming place but located right in historic Church Hill. Stopped in for a quick bite to check it out shortly after moving to the area. Had the chicken sandwich was pretty standard. Great list of local and regional beers on tap and in bottles. Service was slow despite it being a very light night so three instead of four stars. Definitely will be back.

The Pub is an essential part of the neighborhood of Church Hill. Though it certainly can be fancied up for the right occasion, Patrick Henry Pub is at its best when it’s serving delicious, simple food and no frills drinks. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by neighbors, people invited by neighbors, and the occasional out of towner who heard about the bar on a TV show on Discovery. The rules are simple: Come with a good attitude and you’ll be made to feel right at home.
With regular specials, the kitchen puts forth a tasty food that is at a great price. I’ve enjoyed burgers, sandwiches, soup, salads, pasta, fish and chips, and beer battered chicken tenders (so simple, but so crispy!) But to be honest, I don’t go here for the food – even though it’s good. I go there because I know that when I sit at the bar, there will be a load of friendly, welcoming people. And if I go on trivia night? A lot of friendly, welcoming, smart people! Ha!
Now some people have noted the smoking here. There is an upstairs bar and restaurant that they sometimes open, for non-​smokers, depending on the crowd. There’s also a back patio that’s brilliant during the warm months. If neither sounds appealing, it’s best to be out by 9 – that’s when people are allowed to light up.

Patrick Henry’s is a Church Hill necessity. Whenever you are craving delicious pub fare, a beer with friends on an awesome patio, or even a fun night of trivia, this is the place to go.
The staff is always professional and attentive. They are very nice and are always very helpful. The food is very good and they have a surprisingly wide variety of options.
There are three sections to this place: the basement bar (smoky but fun), upstairs restaurant (quiet and quaint), and outdoor patio (awesome!)

I have been to Patrick Henry a few times before and I have yet to be disappointed. Normally I go during the evening and sit in the downstairs pub area, which is a great neighborhood bar feel. The bartenders are friendly, and the overall atmosphere is welcoming.
I recently went to eat during lunch and sat on their outdoor patio which is highly recombined. Most of the deck is shaded so the summer heat is not unbearable. My friend ordered a burger, which was fantastic, while I decided on the greek salad and the calamari as a appetizer. Our main course was delicious, the only thing I can think as an improvement would be the calamari have something else included, it was rather soupy and adding rice or something to help absorb the dressing would be better than the bread.

I almost didn’t review this place because I don’t want everyone going there and stealing my spot! This is the one of the most low key, easy going, chill places I’ve been to in Richmond. It’s the place I want to go to get a drink after work, or a lazy Saturday afternoon. It’s the kind of place you want to hang out, not when you want anything extra special. Patrick Henry has a tiny, dark downstairs bar, an open patio that gives you the feeling that you’re in someone’s backyard, and an upstairs bar that has that casual, neighborhood feeling. The food is nothing to sneeze at either — you’re not going to get anything super fancy, just regular old American food at regular old prices. Sometimes you need a break from all of Richmond’s trendy restaurants!

Patrick Henry is a great bar IF you don’t mind cigarette smoke and a calmer experience. Personally, I love the atmosphere and I enjoy smoking when enjoying a few drinks with friends!
It is one of my favorites for a low key night or a for a meet-​up where we can sit and talk, but still enjoy the bartenders playlists. :)
As far as dinner goes, I recently ate there for the first time. The outdoor porch seating area is great! However the food was extremely disappointing.
Mediocre flavored pasta, uninteresting burgers, and a terrible dessert… which was strange to me because it was being promoted so strongly! The double chocolate brownie was tiny, hard as a rock and tasted store bought… the «homemade» ice cream I was given was literally maybe 3 tablespoons atop the depressing chocolate tease — $ 8???
Shameful really!
I’ll stick to the bar next time.

Located on E. Broad Street and nestled into the charming Church Hill neighborhood, you’ll find a restaurant/​pub with an ambience reminiscent of a colonial or well-​aged home. It has two floors: basement and «upstairs», aka street-​level to Broad. Upstairs seats ~2−3 dozen people along wooden tables and chairs. Food served is quite decent ranging from salmon and salads to burgers and fish and chips. Should a dining companion have food restrictions, the kitchen and staff are very willing to make accommodations. Open until 2am Mon-​Sun, it’s a perfect place for grabbing drinks or for improvising a quick get-​together.
ALSO, best ever: $ 4.25 Angus beef burger specials on Tuesdays. Do it. Delicious, perfectly done and well-​seasoned.
Street parking is usually easy to find. Service is warm, hilarious, and attentive. Only downside is the small space and inability to split checks. However, they usually are willing to accept multiple cards on one check. If you find yourself in the neighborhood or VCU area, I highly recommend making a pit stop here.

I guess this was part of the tour, but you can enter from 1 side, go up the stairs to the private dining room, then down some stairs to the more and whatnot. Anyhow it’s confusing because it looks like an old house. Actually if I’m not mistaken someone told me it was an old house. Here for a semi private large party dinner of 18+ we felt like we got our own part of the house.
The bar upstairs carries a half dozen craft beers, full liquor selection and room for a few dozen people. The half up stairs room could hold 2 parties of 10, but the pocket doors keep free movement limited. This is why we decided to split the tables up. With a group this large you are not going to get the service you would at a regular restaurant. We overwhelmed our bartender with some 50 drinks at all times.
The gal who brought the food only brought the food and no one filled our water. The menu is simple, but good. I found the salad boring, but the chicken parm was interesting. Well made pasta, thick hearty sauce and 3 large chicken pieces filleted well.
This place seems as old as Patrick Henry himself with the seemingly original wood floors, and steps the bathrooms aren’t clearly marked either. On this hot summer night I found the read outdoor patio courtyard pleasant to vape with other patrons. It’s almost a garden back there. Post dinner drinks had me sitting on the porch missing my pipe before we hightailed it to start out bar crawl. It’s an interesting place to visit and I can see its appeal for locals to entertain guests, but not a place to come and get rowdy.

It’s spring. Patio season is here. And one of the best patios in Church Hill, possibly in the whole of Richmond, is at Patrick Henry’s Pub. Surrounded by nicely ancient-​looking brick walls, it’s a place to chill out under trees and enjoy surprisingly good food. And for you dog owners, the patio’s puppy-​friendly too.
There are times when I feel bad that I don’t hit up PHP more often. Yes, I know it’s a pub leaning more towards drinking. I see it advertising trivia nights and am always tempted to go so I can thoroughly humiliate every other player, but … I used to smoke. When one stops smoking, as I did fourteen years ago, one gets very sensitive to the smell of smoke. The pub portion REEKS of smoke even when no one’s smoking. The first time my husband and I went there we sat in the pub and about five minutes later I was begging the server to get us upstairs, where smoking’s not allowed, or the patio. That’s how we discovered how awesome the patio is.
PHP keeps to fairly simple food, but what it has is extremely tasty. I’m a big fan of its chicken tenders and fries appetizer, which is, at least for me, enough for a meal. It comes hot out of the fryer, well-​seasoned and with delicious honey mustard sauce into which to dip both tenders and fries. The chicken parm sandwich has great marinara sauce. The burger is always good, and I had one of the better caprese salads in my life here. Someone in the kitchen knows what he or she is doing.
I wouldn’t call it a destination place, but for us Church Hillians we’re glad it’s here.

A rather interesting place. you have the choice of two types of ambience in one restaurant. A great basement and outdoor patio with a more subdued but terrific colonial atmosphere upstairs.
The upstairs or the basement I’ve been to both! Flip a coin! They are both great! I still like the ambience of the upstairs, …the basement… beer time! Patio in the summer is nice.
