Oh proper pie, how I love you so. The little savory pies make the perfect compact meal to eat out in the park on a sunny day. And don’t forget the slice of sweet! There’s always new flavors to try, so I attempt to branch out from my favorites. Highly recommend the smoked salmon, leek, and potato or the peach and pork bbq. For sweet, chocolate raspberry cream or blueberry apple.

Yum! This is where you want to go for any type of pie craving.
What I love about this place is that they always have something new on the menu and they have such a wide variety to choose from. I feel like a kid during Christmas. From their sweet to savory pies, everything looks delicious and tastes fresh. You can choose from fruity, chocolatey, creamy, meat pies, etcetc. It’s such a treat to go every time.
Savory pies are fun because you eat them with your hands :)

If I could figure out how to finance traveling to Richmond every week to try all of their different pies, I would! Wonderful, quirky little shop my Airbnb host recommended for lunch. All of the employees were sweet, and very helpful at pointing out their favorites in the menu. Definitely a must when you’re in the Church Hill neighborhood.

Proper Pie is what dreams are made of and there is magic baked into both the crust of every single slice of sweet pie and every morsel of the savory pies. I thought I had reviewed Proper Pie because I’ve been there too many times to count. I’ve had a number of slices of sweet pies — Buttermilk Raspberry, Chocolate Chess, Lemon Meringue, Key Lime, Chocolate Raspberry, Strawberry. I’ve had a few savory pies as well but not as many as I would like. Everything there is delicious, the pie is truly an art. My advice is to try to avoid this spot during peak times and if there is a special flavor you want, go as soon as they open. Flavors are posted daily on their Facebook page. Proper Pie also has a number of other sweets to choose from — I’ve never tried them but they are sure to be good. They do have seating inside but it’s abysmal during peak times, so I usually get mine to go. The whipped cream is almost a MUST if you get a warm, sweet pie.

I’m so blown that in my four years of living in Richmond, I have never set foot in Proper Pie until yesterday. The workers were extremely friendly, and the pies on display looked amazing. They have regular dessert pies along with meat pies. I ordered a chocolate chess pie and a pecan pie to go. Both were to die for. I am DEFINITELY planning on coming back soon and would 100% recommend this place to others!

Its ok, I wasn’t that impressed. I like the idea, but it wasn’t spectacular. the filling was dried out, I guess it had been sitting in that warmer a while before I ordered mine. I would come back with friends, but I don’t think I would come out of my way on my own.

Just topped it of with the Coconut Cream pie ~ fantastic, both the crust & filling! Not too heavy or sweet.
IMO sweet pie slices could be smaller, & a dollar less, this is a LOT of pie!

You are not a proper Richmonder until you have eaten at Proper Pie.
Hands down best pies in the city. As a vegan, their hand pies are stand-​out. Both their sweet and savory options are great — for vegans and non-​vegans alike. It’s that good.
I don’t really have anything else to add because the food really speaks for itself. I wish their hours were a little better, but they run a tight ship, can’t complain.
Go if you haven’t already!

A popular spot in Church Hill, they are doing all kinds of business! The line was out the door around 1pm on a Friday. My friend and bf both chose the lamb and vegetable savory pies. I liked their’s, but we all agreed that the butter chicken pie I ordered was even better.
With nowhere to sit inside and given that it was raining, we followed other diners and sat on. The stoop of a nearby building to enjoy our lunch. The fact that there isn’t any space to eat inside (very few tables inside and extreme popularity) would limit the circumstances in which I would go back. If it’s a nice day and you can walk to the park or if I wanted carryout, I’d go back.
For dessert we got a coconut cream pie, but we didn’t have room. We ate it the next day and it was so good! So so so good! The pie is creamy with a crunchy cookie crust. Go for dessert. The savory pies were decent, but dessert was amazing! 3.5 stars for savory pies and 5 stars for the coconut cream pie!

They have amazing savory hand pies with super delicious flaky crust. I’ve always been super pleased with everything I’ve gotten there. It’s a small place, as per Richmond, but if it’s a nice day, I recommend going to the park just across the street to enjoy your pie. They put up which pies they’ll have each day on their facebook so you can check if they’ve got your favorite! They don’t make a huge excess of each so they sometimes sell out but you really can’t go wrong with a different option anyway (at least I haven’t).
I’m particularly fond of the salmon/​leek pie. Oh yes.

Why I haven’t gotten my butt here sooner is beyond me. I love sweet pies. I love savory pies. I basically love all delicious pies. and I now happen to love Proper Pie Co.
My bestie and I stopped by here for a quick lunch on a road trip. Luckily, we found parking a little down the street from Proper Pie Co., but it’s definitely inconvenient. There is only street parking. And I can tell on a weekend, you probably won’t find parking too close.
It’s a super small place, with only 5 bar seats by the window (perfect for window watching though!) more seats at the counter where you order your pies, and 2 small tables. They had a lot of choices on their board, and I believe the pies change daily. I decided on a steak and cheese pie and a slice of the blueberry apple pie. The line might get a little long, but they work FAST. Before I was even done paying, they had my pies heated up and ready.
We managed to snag two seats by the window, perfect for a rainy day/​people watching. The steak and cheese pie was so GOOD. I loved the crust, and the filling was delicious with chunks of steak and onions. It was a fantastic savory pie. I split it with my friend and she had the chicken and vegetables, basically a chicken pot pie. It was anything but basic that’s for sure. I liked it a little more than the steak and cheese. The chicken was pipping hot and everything was just done well. It might be what you think a perfect chicken pot pie is.
The blueberry apple pie was good, but not my favorite. I loved the filling, blueberries and apples? Can’t get much better than that. I thought their was too much crust and it made it super heavy. They do offer whipped cream or ice cream for the sweet pies, and I think if I got ice cream on top, it would have helped to cut the heavy crust.
They do have other desserts. There was this awesome looking chocolate soaked sponge cake in a huge square stacked at the front. I half expected my friend to automatically order it, but we decided to save it for another time! Because you know I’ll definetely be back to try every single one of those pies at some point.
The gist of this review: The savory pies are better than the sweet pies, they’re super quick so don’t worry about it taking too long, and good luck finding parking around there on a weekend/​busy nice day.

I went down to Richmond for a quick day trip to visit my brother at VCU. He had been telling me about this banoffee pie that I HAD to try.
First order of business was to go to Proper Pie Co. The line was fairly long, but it actually moved quickly. Unfortunately, though there was no banoffee pie there. We did have a slice of the chocolate chess pie (delicious), the dutch apple pie with vanilla ice cream (possibly the best apple pie I’ve ever had), and the pork and peach bbq savory pie. All of these were amazing.
We ate slowly and waited to see if the banoffee pie would come out while we were there. We ended up getting another pie (mince meat and cheese pie — also delicious) so we didn’t look like we were just loitering. After this pie though, we left and went on about our day.
Fast forward 5 hours later, we were at another Richmond restaurant gem and were on a 1 hour wait for dinner and thought we would call Proper Pie Co. to see if banoffee pie was finally there.
AND IT WAS.
We drove a mile across town and got a couple slices plus a mock turtle and had some while we waited for dinner. (this is totally normal, we love food)
Banoffee pie was AMAZING and completely worth the wait. I actually ended up taking a slice of that plus the mock turtle pie back home to Northern VA and didn’t get them to a fridge until about 11pm-​12am and both held up very well.
Would highly recommend this and can’t wait to come back.

Go for the buttermilk and raspberry. It’s the perfect combination of sweet and tarte. The sweet pies are a nice size and could be split between two people if you’re coming directly from brunch. The place was also super cute with many seats. A 4 – 5 people line started to form after we got our pies but it moved quickly. There are even vegan options!
Brownie points for Proper Pie Co. because everyone here was super friendly and quick with the service. I wish I had room for their savory pies. Will be back.

This place is pretty great! The pies are absolutely amazing. The crust on all of their savory pies is super flakey and buttery and they all have delicious centers that are anything but average. My favorite pie that I’ve gotten there was a roast pork and apple. It was perfect. I only have a few issues with this place. They’re not open very long each day which is pretty disappointing, they’re pretty pricey for how much food you get, and every time I go in there all the employees stare at me when I’m trying to make a decision on what I want to get which makes me feel like I don’t have enough time to decide. If I was basing my rating just on the quality of the food it would definitely a ⁵⁄₅. I love the food just some other aspects of the restaurant are less than perfect to me.

Outstanding pies! What is up with Church Hill producing the best pies and crossaints?! Been wanting to go to Proper Pie but today, we accidentally drove past it after visiting the dog park. There is definately more of an incidentive going to the church hill dog park since it’s literally next to Proper Pie. Now on to the pie: great flacky and thick crust with a warm satisfying filling that is sure to warm your mouth. Pies are cooked to perfection and are pre-​made. They usually have 5 main fillings, of which are all worth every penny. We got the cheese and steak & chicken ‘potpie’. Both were slammin’ good and ate one within seconds, whoops. Make sure to give their NEHI drinks a try! They are great thirst quencher.

Proper Pie is some kind of AMAZING.
Yes, I can make a pie.
But I rather someone else make it and Proper makes it in the best possible way — thick, full crust, full flavor and an array of choices.
My favorite? The Sour Cream Blueberry. Their Banaoffee (coffee banana? banana toffee) was unique. I couldn’t make up my mind so I had two slices of generous pie. =0) I didn’t get a sugar crash because it wasn’t too sweet!
Oh, and yes, I know one comes for their famed savory pies — I got the pork chili one — it did not disappoint and didn’t leave a weird filmy layer on my tongue. Hearty, generous, and oh so filling. Just the perfect on the go, cheap eats in my book!

Went with a bunch of my friends, the place gets very crowded (since there is a Patrick Henry memorial (!!) closeby, there were lots of school kids who had their Liberty came for their death of hunger (not sure if this funny atleast I think it is !)
Lots of options, most of them are cooked, so you just pick a pie, pay using apple pay and then you’re out, pretty standard stuff.
I had the one savory pie and one ginger cookie, both of them were yum. Curried Seitan &Potato (Ithey had the vegan and the butter option, choose the Butter !!)
Being of Indian origin, i felt this tasted a lot like a veggie puff found in Indian cuisine, but this was oozing with flavor and the stuffing.
For now this was my only Savory option (being a vegetarian), I would love to go back again if they added more veggie options

If Proper Pie was within 5 miles of where I live, my waistline would be a lot bigger and my checking account balance, a lot smaller. I haven’t been in about a year or so (and I have NO idea why). This place is one of my favorite establishments in Richmond.
I called beforehand to see what kind of sweet pie selections they had the person who answered the call was very friendly and patient with me as I had a few questions about their selection. When I arrived about an hour later I again asked about their selection because I had a short term memory and I usually order food with my eyes. Even though there was a small line behind me and I was being relatively indecisive, I did not feel like I was being rushed with my order and the lady who was taking my order was very detailed and nice; my only «complaint» was that she spoke in a slightly sensual way about the pies (I guess I would to, but not in public). I finally decided on the coconut cream pie as it looked DELICIOUS. The price was a little high for me but well worth it for a special Valentines surprise for Bae.
I also got a small pastry called a «yo yo» that was very flaky and quite tasty. I was on my way to va beach and the employee assured me it would be okay in my car for the 1.5 to 2 hour drive. The pie was: tasty, delicious, decadent, delightful, mouthwatering etc. I loved everything about the pie; the custard was creamy, the coconut flakes perfect, and the ginger graham cracker crust perfect and not crumbly at all. I think we were able to get a healthy 8 slices out of the pie, if not one or two more.
The next time you want a dessert for a special occasion, no need to look any further than Proper Pie!

When I think of my favorite RVA foodie spots, Proper Pie definitely lands in my Top 3. They have a never-​ending and rotating list of unique flavors (both savory and sweet) but what really makes their pies special is that CRUST. I’m all about that crust, ’bout that CRUST (cue the music, Meghan Trainor)! Seriously though — how do they do it?! So flaky, flavorful, and holds in every bit of filling (NEVER any leakage). I can only dream to make crust the way they do it!
I’ve tried lots of their savory options (Roast Pork & Apple, Chicken/​Leek/​Mushroom, Pork Chile Verde, and Smoked Salmon and Leeks) and they’re all tasty, but my all-​time favorite would be their Mince pies — both Savory Mince and Vegan Mince are incredible!
For my sweet tooth: I haven’t tried a lot of their fruit-​based pies since I’m a total sucker for cream-​filled ones (both the Coconut Cream and Chocolate Raspberry Cream are out of this world!) but I have tried the Raspberry Chess and really liked it. Lemon Meringue was alright but probably wouldn’t get it again.
Pies are very reasonably priced and I’m always surprisingly full afterwards and even though there’s always a line, it moves quickly and the customer service is on point.
Whenever I have friends visiting Richmond, I make it a point to take them to this Church Hill institution. Keep doing what you’re doing, Proper Pie! And pretty please, open up a store in The Fan :)

This place continues to stay top notch. The staff is probably some of the nicest in the city and the food is great.
Definitely don’t skip the salted caramel pumpkin pie this year. They’ve made some recipe changes and perfected the caramel sauce making it a whole new level of heavenly!
