Most of their donuts are way too sweet for me – they end up just tasting like sugar, processed sugar with no flavor. Stick to the simple, traditional flavors and you won’t get a stomach ache.

I heard people raving about the donuts in Richmond and didn’t expect anything beyond and overly decorated donut, but boy was I wrong! Walking into Sugar Shack on its own is amazing. The «shack» is cute, hopping with people, and adorably decorated.
I was astounded by sheer number of donuts to choose from, which the cashier cheerfully listed, and loved just looking at all of the different types. The coffee was great too! I can’t wait to go back!

Donuts are OK. Coffee is great. Service is OK. I can’t say that I loved the donuts, but they weren’t bad per se, they just weren’t awesome. Your mileage may vary.

Sugar Shack has excellent donuts. Coming from me, this is pretty awesome, as I don’t like sweets. But, I actually ate a whole donut! It was soft and delicious. But, to me, the real treat about sugar shack is their drinks. They have very unique drinks, and are always featuring a zany, fun flavor. Their espresso machines are very decadent. And, the atmosphere of Sugar Shack is great, too!

Seriously, don’t ask what the doughnuts are if you don’t want eye rolling and heavy sighing. They are amazing treats, but I now wait and hope for someone else to bring them to work or an event so I don’t have to deal with the constant attitudes.
I totally understand and have no issue with the parking, I could even deal with the lack of signage regarding today’s options. It’s tough to give them three stars, but I have to drop it down a star because I’ve never felt welcomed in the place whenever I ask about flavours, which is every single time I have been there. If your staff doesn’t want to answer questions, then out up some signs.
All that said, these are some seriously amazing doughnuts and I do appreciate how much Sugar Shack gives back to the community. Order in advance so all you have to do is go in and grab your party doughnuts and its great.

Great donuts and always something new to try.

I was really excited to try Sugar Shack donuts for the first time, but surprisingly I was not blown away. It is a very small building with about 4 parking spots available which makes it difficult to maneuver and find a spot in the parking lot. I figured that I would let this go and see what the deal was with the famous donuts.
We sat in line for a a few minutes as we were eyeballing the menu, which consisted of prices for specialty or house donuts as well as coffee, and I realized that each donut in the case did not have a sign indicating what flavor it was. I was informed by a friend that their flavors change daily and that could be the reason for this, but I still feel as though it would be more convenient for both the customer and the staff to have labels on their donuts to reduce waiting times as well as reduce the amount of times the staff had to repeat the flavors.
Once we were up next to order, the woman who served us seemed very irritated that we had asked her to repeat the flavors, which is another reason I feel as though labels would be beneficial for this establishment. I was also trying to differentiate between a house and specialty donut and she did not answer my question thoroughly because she was onto the next customer already. So service wise, I would give it a B.
I purchased the donut topped with chocolate chips, caramel, chocolate, and coconut flakes and it was tasty, but not anything extraordinary. I also purchased the apple glazed donut and WOW! This flavor was so delicious I wished I had purchased more. I regret not trying any coffee from sugar shack because they had a great variety, and the coconut iced coffee special looked tasty!
Overall, my first experience at sugar shack was average at best, but I plan to visit again next time I am in the area because I always believe in giving something a second try! (Especially sweets!)

Let me preface with I don’t like donuts normally. I usually prefer salty over sweet and if I do have something spongy, I’d prefer it to be cake. That being said… Sugar Shack blew me away. The donuts are the perfect level of soft and chewy with an amazing flavor to them. I tried several different types and each one was perfectly balanced, tasted delicious and was so light. I highly recommend if you’re in RVA to take the time and try one (or five). This place has more than earned their national reputation as the home of one of the best tasting donuts!

This is probably the best donut shop I’ve been to since moving to Richmond! The dough they make from scratch with no preservatives and all of the different flavors are pure genius! My favorite so far has been the Irish bailey’s cream-​filled one (I think that’s what it’s called) that they do for St. Patty’s Day! There’s also always a promotion they’re doing that can get you a free house doughnut. The vibe is very RVA hipster and everyone working there is pretty chill. Definitely recommend stopping by if your in Richmond!

Very fresh donuts! People in this neighborhood were lined up mid afternoon for a reason! Looks like a huge selection of flavors and all warm and just out of the oven! They had about 20 yeast donut varieties and one cake donut variety on this visit. I got the Samoa and a toasted coconut and chocolate flavor. The Samoa was crazy with layers of caramel and chocolate, way too sweet, but the coconut donut was just right. Worth a trip for some excellent fresh donuts!

I LOVE this place. Been coming since ’14. If you’ve never been, do not deny yourself the pleasure any longer! In the illustrious words of Donna Meagle & Tom Haverford… TREAT YOURSELF!
These donuts are yeast style. Yeast style being what would be what you get from Krispy Kreme as opposed to cake style like you would get from Dunkin’ Donuts or Duck Donuts. Sugar Shack donuts are light and airy pockets of heaven’s clouds, infused into a sweet golden brown pastry, topped off by an assortment of candies, icings, and bacon! My favorite has to be any of their donuts with Strawberry frosting, their Cinnamon Rolls, and the Maple Bacon donut!

We have recently gotten a lot more little donut places where I am from (DE) but not like this place. True donuts meaning they are doughy not cakey. Tons of kinds to pick from and all were delicious. We had strawberry with vanilla, salted caramel, blueberry, butterfinger and lemon. I will def come back to try anything lavender flavored (my fav) which they were out of. Wish I would have grabbed a dozen on my way out of town.

Great place, never have any complaints. The staff is really nice and make the best lattes. The guy making it looked like he enjoyed his job and literally told me, «this is the best latte in the world.»
Ive had Sugar Shack countless times, not the biggest fan of thicker donuts, I prefer a donut more like Krispy Kreme because you can eat like 30.
Cant go wrong with the bacon maple, cinnamon sugar, glazed, or sea-​salt caramel.

If you are craving donuts, you HAVE to go Sugar Shack. They are the Beyonce of all doughnut shoppes in Richmond. I was first introduced back in early 2015 and have been a faithful comfortable ever since. What sets them apart is that they’re donuts are soooo airy unlike Duck or Country Style. It is light to eat and doesn’t make you feel as bad when you cheat your diet.
My favorites of all time would have to be the maple bacon, kit kat, and salted caramel!

Then there’s the coffees. I haven’t had one I didn’t like yet.

I loooooove Sugar Shack, even more than the highly-​praised Sublime Donuts (their strawberry donut the exception) back in Atlanta.
My favorites are all the special donuts — the bacon maple, samoa, espresso and caramel, etc. This location is the original and I see that parking is a bit of a nightmare. I never know what to do so I just drive around until I see an opening. If you have a partner in crime, I’d drive to the entrance and park for 5min while the other person nabs donuts.
Sugar Shack, if it isn’t obvious, is literally a shack. They have donuts and coffee drinks available but plan on takeout. Even the second location is pretty small.
My only points of dissatisfaction:
1) I really dislike not knowing what flavors are available. I want to know what to order so I won’t be deliberating while people wait behind me.
2) no real inventory on cake donuts — I’ve been to SS maybe 6 times now and still haven’t been able to snag a cake donut! It’s like a unicorn now, the mythical cake donuts :(
3) parking is a complete nightmare. If you can snag a spot, good luck getting out… with maybe 5 feet and fingers crossed you won’t hit another car or another car doesn’t try to get in, blocking you and the street as well.

All I can say is I LOVE this place. The donuts are deliciousness in my mouth and the creative variety of flavors keeps me going back for more. I had 3 donuts in one day and felt so guilty, but after thinking about it it was more than worth it. The donut with the Lee’s Famous Fried Chicken pieces is by far my favorite!

They run a tight ship here and manage to keep a genuine smile in the process. A bit on the pricey side but more than worth it when you take that first bite. They also encourage repeat business with coupons and contests. When we arrived it was «Pirate Day» and anyone who ordered with an «Arrgh Matey» or similar accent got a little bit taken off the top of their bill. Good people and dang fine donuts.

These are the best doughnuts in Richmond! I like that the selections change and it’s always a surprise what is in the case. I’ve never had a bad doughnut at Sugar Shack!

These donuts are to die for! Freshly made with creative toppings. I never know what to get. The customer service there is really great too they’re always willing to let you know what’s new and give recommendations on what to get.

Bottom line. Sugar Shack has the best doughnut in VA. I bring all my family and friends from all over to the spot and it’s a favorite to bring to the workplace or home for dessert after a long day I love sugar shack and I am so thankful they opened so many more locations. Great, cake-​y doughnuts with a very large variety of flavors!

I have to admit that I like Duncan Donuts and Krispy Crème better. These donuts are large and yeasty, which are good if that’s what you like. They certainly have a nice variety from which to choose.

Don’t go telling everyone, but Sugar Shack gives me warm fuzzies (followed by a sugar crash). Sometimes I really wish they didn’t have so many flavors because I NEED to try them all. If you’re ever in the area or passing through, share a half dozen or full dozen with a friend or coworkers. The donut flavors range from your usual glazed and cakes, to samoa cookie and red velvet. You really can’t go wrong with any of them, and they’re always fresh. I advise you taste as many as you possibly can before you form type 2 diabetes.

Look, if you want donuts this is the place.
The choices are decadent, all of them, so you can’t go wrong.

I haven’t been to the actual establishment to rate the service but the donuts alone are 5 stars!
My coworker brings them from this Richmond, where she visits her daughter, and man oh MAN donut day is highly anticipated. I can only eat ½ of one. Super rich, huge donuts, awesome flavor variety. I am in love.

Whenever I come to RVA, I make it a must to get a donut or two (okay, maybe a box if I’m feeling adventurous).
My go-​to donut is the Samoa or anything topped with coconut. These donuts are SO big, and one alone will fill me up. Their flavors change daily, but they manage to have at least two flavors I love. However, for some odd reason, I can’t fully enjoy one of their donuts without a cup of coffee to wash down the sugary goodness.
The staff is very friendly and efficient, but I find it easy to get skipped in line when they take orders, especially with this location being a small one.
Overall, this donut shop makes my cut! I’ll be back for more.

I have to say, the Lombardy Sugar Shack is by far top notch. I’ve been to a few other locations and nothing compares to Lombardy St. The ladies and gentlemen working there are so friendly and welcoming each and every time I come in. greeting everyone with a warm welcome and smile. They are constantly busy but work as a team to get people in and out satisfied with their donut and/​or drink selections.
I visit Sugar Shack more often than I should but how could you not when they deliver the full package? They deliver not only quality donuts and drinks; but also, world class customer service. Sounds like a triple threat to me! Forget all those other silly chains and support your local businesses, you’d be a fool not to!
Go to the Lombardy Sugar Shack, you won’t regret it!
Also, shout out to my boy Kyle who knows my regular drink order. One time he had it ready for me by the time I got to the check out without even telling him. Now if that’s not world class customer service then I don’t know what is…

Personal favorite drink: ice vanilla latte, nonfat milk

Great donuts and such a cute atmosphere. There’s no seating inside, but on a nice day, you could always just go across the street to some benches. Coffee is really good as well! I watched the barista make my latte and they took their time with it (a good thing), and it came out perfect. I love seeing the new flavors they come out with, but their classics never get old. Love the samoa and maple bacon donuts!

Nothing beats Sugar Shack. Their donuts are incredible: creative and so, so tasty. I’m always excited to see which ones they’ve made that day; my favorites are the ones with a chocolate frosting base.
Only downside is that it’s best to walk there, because while they have a parking lot and have expanded it, getting in and out of it isn’t fun.

Healthy sized donuts, fast and friendly service plus an ever changing menu makes Sugar Shack an obvious choice for your breakfast, dessert and snacktime cravings.
The convenient corner location has parking in front and back; designed for takeout, they do a great job of getting you in and out efficiently while still making you feel welcome. My Sunday morning visit in December was a breeze and my friend enjoyed her coffee.
Salted caramel, vanilla and chocolate peppermint, apple cake, peanut chocolate and strawberry coconut were just a few of the varieties for that day. Maple bacon is one of their always available options. Their offerings are mostly yeast donuts of a substantial size, so you can just as easily eat these with a fork and knife.
I don’t live in Richmond and do not often eat donuts, but when I do, I prefer Sugar Shack.

Conveniently located in the Carver neighborhood where I reside, this is the go-​to place to grab a dozen gourmet donuts before I head to work. The most popular donut seems to be the Bacon Maple. I personally am a coconut and chocolate type of gal, and thus the Samoa Cookie donut is my favorite.
Coffee addicts: try the Yama Lavender Cold Drip. Life changing.

I’m pretty sure heaven smells like a box of Sugar Shack Donuts. Richmond has become sort of a mecca for donut connoisseurs with an assortment of shops popping up, but Sugar Shack really raises the bar. Just another donut you say, absolutely not. The doughy bites of sugar topped magic melt in your mouth. The biggest problem at Sugar Shack is choosing a flavor. Their offerings are vast and varied and oh so enticing. Leave your diet at the door because resistance is futile against flavors that include bacon maple, red velvet, a SAMOA flavored one (!), cinnamon sugar, chocolate with just about everything from coconut to m&ms, apple cake, AND SO. MUCH. MORE. Go ahead, try to pick a favorite — it’s HARD. For my birthday last year someone brought me a dozen. I literally ate a little of every single one — before sharing begrudgingly.
You’ll want to follow their Facebook page for a few reasons — first, they offer special flavors that you won’t want to miss and also, you can score a free donut by following their playful instructions.
The little shack that could has become so popular that additional shacks have popped up around Richmond, as well as some outside of Richmond.

Sweet doughnut Jesus, I am a believer.
Yes, the parking can be tight, the space is small, and there are no flavour signs — but the yeast-​risen doughnuts are good. The cake doughnuts are good. The Samoa doughnut is good. The honey wheat doughnut is good. I’d probably fight my own husband over the last salted caramel doughnut if it came to that. The entire Sugar Shack team from bakers to cashiers are friendly and dedicated to creating some of the best doughnuts you will eagerly cram into your mouth and they do it. Go forth and get converted.

Something bad happened to Sugar Shack. They used to be the hottest doughnut shop around the block, but now the bland taste of the same doughnuts; just with different toppings, made me reevaluate my life. Honestly with this establishment, it doesn’t surprise me how much it’s faltering now. Put some blueberry in your batter next time, it’s not that hard, even I know the recipe.
Dough was stale, and I can see through the window that the employers are messing around and most are not wearing gloves. Besides the renovations done, the kitchen does not look up to par, and parking is atrocious. I recommend a better doughnut shop that abides by health etiquette when you are in town.
Also, if you decide to bring your delights home make sure you eat them all at once, or you’ll be dealing with some nice rocky doughnuts the next day.

I’m mad at myself for only giving this place 4 stars; it’s an institution and it is amazing! And not having the donuts labeled just means you get a good description of them when you ask the friendly attendants what they are. Really cool space and the restrooms are clean and interesting– they even have a chalkboard for you to leave commentary! I had a banana split donut today and it was divine.

Today I tried the strawberry shortcake latte, but it tasted nothing like strawberry shortcake. It tasted like a regular latte and a small costed me around $ 4. Don’t have high expectations for that.
Other than that, their service is great. The lady behind the counter explained what all the donut flavors were and what constituted as a House Donut. Sugar Shack never disappoints.
