What a GREAT little treasure in a hidden strip mall! Super cute décor and FABULOUS service(Paige). The food was good enough(hence the average three stars…) and a bit pricy for what you got. Otherwise… loved it!

Went here for my birthday lunch today. Wonderful burger and sweet potato fries. Was not very crowded, which was good because the service was efficient. I had a regular yard burger with cheddar and sweet potato fries. Delicious! Will be back!

Was pleasantly surprised. Had a delicious burger, crisp fries and a good IPA draft. Looks like the old Bogarts but fresher with new pics and cute vestibule. Waitress was very sweet and just attentive enough. Very happy to have a new neighborhood hangout and fits the budget!

We have been meaning to try The Backyard Grill since they opened and finally got around to it last Friday for an early dinner. Pros: –Happy Hour Specials! –Service — Justin was great –Burgers — we got the Mac n Burger and the Aloha Chicken Sandwich. We agreed that the burger was better than the chicken sandwich, but we liked them both –Location — we are excited to have more variety in the neighborhood! Cons: –Lighting — the whole restaurant just seems really dim –Small Bar — we didn’t eat at the bar, but noticed that it was a little small. It’s definitely not somewhere you would go with a group –Variety of menu — If you aren’t in the mood for a sandwich or a salad, there’s not too much else to choose from. Overall we had a good experience and will return — welcome to the neighborhood Backyard Grill!

After reading several good reviews and taking a look at the menu online, we decided to check out the Backyard Grill and we were not disappointed. Three of us dined on the smoked pimento cheese, chili, cornbread, pulled pork, cheese grits, broccoli, the mac and cheese burger and fries; everything was scrumptious, and the service was great. The burger was huge, char grilled perfectly and brought me right back to summer, I felt like I was eating at a family cookout. The pulled pork was smoky and juicy and very similar to our favorite North Carolina style bbq. The cornbread was an ample serving, slightly dry, but flavorful. The pimento cheese, served alongside of salad greens and Uptown bakery bread. The mac burger is 8 ounces of Virginia Shenandoah beef stacked with a fried macaroni and cheese paddy, lettuce, tomato and finely cut onion. That is some well crafted serious comfort food. The grits are high grade and are the perfect accompaniment to the pork. We are excited to support another locally owned business and look forward to returning regularly to this small comfortable backyard grill.

My 1st check and only check in here. The setup here is very awkward. When entering there was no real location for a host or anyone there to greet customers. The theme is grill style cookout type food. Nothing special and very basic burgers, brisket, nachos and fries. I ordered a salad which wasn’t bad but everything other than that was pretty dry. I’m giving one star because our waiter was friendly although he did rave about their grilled donuts that was just that grilled and hard.

Decided to give this place a second chance, as my first experience wasn’t as pleasant as I had hoped. The owner invited me back for another try and I took him up on it. I placed an order for pick-up which was ready in a timely fashion. The hamburgers were delicious, and the portion size is more than enough to satisfy. I also received a platter of brisket nachos, complimentary, thanks to Byan, which were very good as well. Overall I am glad I decided to give this place a second chance, and I will definitely be back again!

This. Place. Is. Amazing. I live nearby and have been here a couple times and have never been disappointed! It is so cozy and has a very modern style. The food definitely describes Backyard Grill. I saw the review about last Friday night 10⁄9 and completely disagree with everything that review says! The place was slammed busy! And yes I did wait 30 minutes for my burger but ITWASTHEBESTBURGERIVEEVERHADINRICHMOND!!! My burger was cooked to perfection(juicy just how I love it) with delicious Hanover tomatoes, cheddar cheese, bacon, avocado, and garlic aioli that is to die for! It was worth the wait. The menu has everything you could want from a backyard grill and more. They have a specials menu that they change often. I will say that the brisket nachos are a mountain high and a must have! I have also had the orchard salad with this amazing ginger vinaigrette that was equally as delicious. The service is always great and attentive. I would HIGHLY recommend this place for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Yes, that’s right they serve breakfast starting at 9 am on Saturday and Sunday’s and have awesome choices and 3 $ mimosas and bloody Mary’s. The owner stopped by my table and checked on us and I noticed him doing table visits numerous times while I was there. I am thrilled this family place opened up and can’t wait to go again.

Had the bbq beef brisket ruben. Not as big as a Joe’s Inn rubin, but it was delicious, generous with the French fries overall great experience. I would definitely try it again and get to the back yard burger to try it out compared with cookout. Recommended.

Wow. This is literally the slowest service I’ve ever had at a place with 7 things on the menu. We’ve been waiting for 35 minutes for 3 burgers. Honestly, I feel bad for the waitresses. It’s not like this place is jam packed either. So unless you’ve got about an hour to wait for their single George Foreman grill to heat up in the back, I don’t recommend it.

Absolutely one of the best hamburgers in Richmond! Great tasting beef on an awesome bun! Perfectly cooked French fries also! A cool non chain environment that has the feel a friendly neighborhood spot. We had a great waitress that was friendly and efficient, she added to our pleasant evening. It was our first time here and we will be back very soon. I really like burgers and Backyard Grill is a special place!

I drive past The Backyard Grill everyday on my way to work, so I have been waiting all summer for them to open. Last week I finally checked them out for dinner. The staff was friendly and attentive. The food was good, but nothing amazing. We had the mac n cheese burger, the orchard salad, and a cheeseburger with gouda and apricot sriracha sauce. The mac burger — a great idea! However, the burger flavor overpowered the mac and cheese, so you didn’t really get to enjoy it. The orchard salad was good, but not wow. The cheeseburger was good… I like that they slightly char the burger but keep it pink on the inside. It is nice to have them in the neighborhood and I am looking forward to the menu expanding. Also, I have heard good things about brunch, so I am looking forward to going back. Cheers!

Great to have a new neighborhood hang out. I’ve been here a couple times and I would say get the burger. I like my burger well done. I finally have a place that know how to cook it that way. Everyone needs to go and eat a burger.

Tried this place for dinner with my 2 kids because we were hungry for good barbeque. Let me just say it far exceeded my expectations. The inside is nice and inviting and everything is new since they just opened 6 weeks ago. Not a huge place, but not too small either. The bar area is nice as well with multiple seating options. The service was excellent and attentive. Everything was explained in detail and with pride. Here’s the big surprise — The pulled pork barbeque is by far the best I’ve had in Richmond, which is saying a lot. All the sides we ordered were perfect as well. The apple slaw was excellent and was a perfect compliment to the pulled pork sandwich. Our waiter said they hand smoke their barbeque and the beef brisket is really good as well, so I will definitely be back to try it. My daughter(aka Picky Miss) ordered the kids hot dog and she proclaimed it the best she ever had, right down to the homemade grilled bun, which she normally throws away. The fries were great as well. We obviously loved it and will be back. The real test will be consistency over time.

Its nice to have a new place in the neighborhood. Nice owner, good food, good service and plenty of parking! From the crowd gathering, it looks like lots of others like the place too. The menu is a bit small, but thats OK. It features some appetizers, like brisket nachos and smoked pimento cheese, burgers, salads, chicken and other sandwiches. What intrigued me the most was a mac-n-cheese pancake, which you could get placed on top of one their made to order burgers(the beef is never frozen according to the owner). So that is what I had to get! DH went for the Southern Gentlemen, which was a fried green tomato and their smoked pimento cheese on top of a burger. Both of us were pretty happy with our choices. Their mac-n-cheese has a slightly smokey finish to it, making it quite nice. Best of all, both burgers came with a proper side of crispy french fries. Service was friendly, consistent and good. Bonus points that I can order an Arnold Palmer without a funny look. Next visit, DH and I are trying the brisket nachos. They looked pretty good on the table next to us. And maybe saving some room for dessert, like that donut thing some of the other reviewers talk about. Also, their to-go boxes are not styrofoam, so bonus points there too. DH noted that perhaps 1 thing that could make the place better might be some cushioning on the booth benches for his skinny butt. But cushions or no cushions, we will gladly return.

Probably the best burger i’ve ever had. There’s nowhere to get a good burger around the neighborhood so this place is perfect. The service was very friendly and great. Met the owner, nice guy. Definately try it, i know i’ll be back often.

The food was great but the service was horrible. Limited menu and the server didnt know what was on it. she said, what do you want to drink? how about, hi and welcome to backyard grill? didnt refill our drinks, didnt clear our plates, brought the check before we were finished. on top, food wasnt spaced out. watched the owners mingle with their friends instead of doing table visits. might try it again in a few months.

I’m so glad the Backyard Grill is now open. That was the best burger I’ve ever had in my life — loved the homemade smoked garlic aioli, spicy sweet potato fries, and grilled Krispy Kreme donut with ice cream. Ditto, says my 17-year-old son. He and his friends tried it first, then recommended it to me. So happy to have an awesome new place so close to home.
