VCU students just voted us «Best Store in Carytown» and we WON the Nickelodeon Parent’s Pick Award for Best Toy Store.

Our products appeal to kids as well as kids at heart with an emphasis on items that you just won’t find at any old store. We strive to create a sense of joy and wonder– nothing makes us happier than seeing the look on someone’s face when they walk through our doors. We believe that play should be encouraged no matter what your age.

Always kid-​friendly, always cutting edge, our shelves are chock-​full of cool stuff to entertain, educate and amuse. Come on in and play!

History

Established in 1993.

We started out as a vintage shop over the legendary store Exile. We later moved to Carytown and blossomed into the one stop shopping location for kids of all ages.

Meet the Manager

Thea B.

Manager

We were started by the wonderful Kathryn Harvey and her family. She wanted to create a cool, fun, kid-​friendly toy store where you could actually play and laugh. We carry on in their memory. It is a labor of love for us and we are happy that our community continues to support us.

We LOVE this store. I am not only rating the store and the products there, but I am rating the staff as well.
This store has a lot of fun classic toys (a great array of legos, etc.), but also things you don’t find just anywhere. In addition, arts and crafts, beautiful stuffed animals, stationary, girls’ beauty products, etc. Even as an adult, I had fun roaming around. There were certainly things there for «special» gifts that were pricey, but they had plenty of other things that were reasonably priced. But what really impressed me the most were the employees. They were not «fake, salesy nice», but super friendly, polite, personable and fun. You could tell they all really loved people. They made us feel so welcome and cared for. I could tell that it’s something the owner/​manager must really care about. That is something I care a lot about, so it really made my shopping experience even better. Come here with kids of all ages.

I like to come here to become inspired, browse, and laugh, but would never buy anything because at the end of the day the prices are jacked up by 50% (I did confirm a few items by checking Amazon on the spot). Bring an out of towner here, or laugh while you’re in Carytown. Take notes of what you want and buy everything online though.

Lots of cute stuff, but CRAZY OVERPRICED. I literally can’t justify buying a single thing in there, even if I love it. I basically only go in here to see what I like so I can order the exact same thing from amazon or ebay for wayyyyyyyyy cheaper. It’s kind of a painful experience though, because an employee will follow you down every. single. aisle. and stare at you. Six different employees will repeatedly ask you if you need any help and hover around you like gnats. It’s SO EXTREMELY CREEPY AND THEY SHOULD STOP DOING THAT and lower prices.

i don’t often review stores, but during a recent trip to Richmond i definitely fell in love with this place. not just for the amazing selection of toys and pop culture memorabilia but also because of the staff! everyone was so friendly and you could tell they truly enjoyed working there.

Amusing and always fun to look around, even as an adult! Take a stop in! I don’t usually buy anything except the occasional cute little knick knack, but it’s a fun stop with a friend or two, and they have plenty for kiddies, too. I also have noticed that employees like to follow you around the store, though.

I had been checking out this store’s overpriced junk once in awhile since 2004 but the last visit was a real insult. Me and a friend were followed around the entire store by a bearded hipster doofus employee. Seriously he was hiding behind displays peering at us like a wanna be rapist. After a few minutes i looked him in the eyes and said «Can we shop without being harassed or do you think everyone is a thief?» So he left but i was super annoyed. I talked to the manager/​owner telling her nicely i didn’t appreciate it and she treated me like garbage. Like it was my fault for entering her precious store. She was beyond rude and said she tells all of her employees to follow shoppers around. Several of my friends have had the same experience. Save yourself some harassment and $ and just order your cheesy novelty crap online.

This is THE best toy store. Ever. At World Of Mirth, you’ll find more kitschy, geeky, and classic toys, games, and novelty items than Monster High or whatever little kids like to play with nowadays. Their stock can vary but examples of what you can find here range from Funko Pop vinyl figures and Squishables to Welovefine and Studio Ghibli merchandise. There’s also a variety of board games, books, magnets, cards, and the list goes on. The staff is always cool and friendly. Great place for kids of all ages!

I love the selection in this store and truly think it is one of the best toy stores I’ve ever been to, unfortunately customer service isn’t all there. They will refuse to make it right for you if it doesn’t help their bottom line — regardless of how many times you’ve spent money there. It’s unfortunate because it’s otherwise a great store. Go there and check it out, but be sure you’re getting what you want before you pay because you just might not be able to take it back — even for store credit.

I have been in World of Mirth many times, often on the heels of excited friends to wander through the aisles and browse shelf after shelf of toys, knickknacks and kitch. I think, over the course of my long time in Richmond, I have purchased… one thing. Two if you count the fact that the matching dragon and knight are technically different hunks of plastic with separate price tags. I don’t know, somehow the stuff never quite catches my attention solidly enough to leave the store with me, even as gifts for other people. I’ll keep looking now and then, though and perhaps will change my mind.

Cool as a «PaperSkyScraper»!!!
We picked some GREAT ThankYou Greeting Cards! Cool Gifts! Fun Shop! Seemed to be more for Adults though I think the Children’s section was in the back? My eBay Bride found this place and heard it was a Cool «Toy Store»… Could be! I liked the Gadgets, Zotz Candy, Cards and more Cool stuff!

I can’t believe that as long as I’ve been in Richmond, I’ve never been to World of Mirth until today. Lots of cute toys and trinkets, but honestly just stuff that I’d buy on a whim that would probably just take up space or end up in the Goodwill bag at some point. Or maybe I just need to go with some kids next time. I’m sure they’d love it.

Mirth really is the perfect word for this toy store. Perhaps in days of yore (alright, maybe 10 years ago), toy stores were more of a common thing, but in today’s day and age, tech gadgets and electronics seem to be taking over. While I’m a huge fan of technology, I absolutely love a good toy store. I also think it’s important for children’s minds to play and interact with physical toys, so I think it’s very important for toy stores to exist.
Enough of that though, all things aside this is a fantastic store. There are so many different kinds of toys here that short of walking through everything, there’s no way to describe everything. There are board games, stuffed animals, small animal figurines, clothing items, books, Doctor Who collectibles, Ghibli toys, and so much more.
I basically wanted to buy everything that I saw there, and if I’m ever looking to go Toy or gift shopping again, World of Mirth will be at the top of my list.

Everytime I’m in Carytown, I have to stop by World of Mirth. It’s a great place to just look around and see all the unique gifts. If you’re looking for a gift for the person that «has everything», come to WoM! You’re bound to find something that you’ve never heard or seen of before!
There’s also tons of stuff for the geeks and nerds. Doctor Who, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, just come and see. For me, I’m an avid collector of tokidoki brand items, and WoM is the only place in Richmond that I’ve found their stuff! Everytime I come, there’s always something uberly cute (but pointless) that I want and I have to force myself out of the store!
Whether you’re looking for a gift or just hanging out with friends, World of Mirth is a great place to stop by.

So I have been coming to this store for several years now and it’s time for a review!
This store has everything combined into my ultimate toy/​specialty store. They carry a WIDE selection of niche goods like: TOYS (and lots of it) cellphone accessories, kids/​adult games, limited edition lego sets, old school collectible-​ish toys, the only place to carry unique Hello Kitty products, candy, light up toys, frisbees, outdoor games, etc. But many if not all the toys you can’t find at your local toys r us, walmart or target.
This store is also the only store in RVA to have carried and currently carry some items featured on the Show Shark Tank which makes it easy for me to personally check out and purchase. Prices can be a bit steep for many of the items but I think it’s worth b/​c it saves me the hassle of online shopping b/​c i can’t see the product in person. Like their FB page and sometimes there will be daily deals.
I’ll never get tired of going to this toy store and they constantly re-​stock their shelves with the newest and latest trendy items.
