Our clients make decisions for their birth with support and evidence-based guidance. Because every mother, every baby, and every birth is different, there are no routine interventions or strict time limits. The strong relationships we build with families prenatally transform into lasting friendships well beyond the initial postpartum period.
If this is what you are looking for, Breath of Life Midwifery may be right for you. We specialize in homebirth services for low risk families, but provide doula services, childbirth classes, breastfeeding support, well woman care, and more.
History
Established in 2009.
I began attending births in 1998 and completed the CAPPA doula coursework in 2003 and sat on the board of CAPPA as the VA-State Representative for about a year. I was also on the local ICAN board and participated with the NRV Birth Association. In 2004, I started an apprenticeship with an amazing direct-entry midwife. Through a 5 year extensive apprenticeship, 100+ credits of college courses, various skills workshops, and countless hours of self-study, I completed the certification requirements and passed the certification exam in 2009 with the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) and became a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) and a Licensed Midwife (LM) with the VA Board of Medicine. I attend peer review and am continuously learning through research, study groups, and hands on experience.
Meet the Business Owner
Crystal F.
Business Owner
I believe in women’s ability to birth. I believe that pregnancy is generally a state of wellness. Women that are given the opportunity to give birth without inhibition and interference do very well and seldom require intervention. My job as a midwife is to educate, counsel, and facilitate the birthing family during the normal childbearing year. At the time of birth, I try to make the experience yours. My priority is to help you have a safe and gentle birth, with little interference. I combine research-based care and experience to help you achieve this goal. I will give gentle guidance and labor support when necessary. However, I believe birth has the ability to strengthen marriages and relationships in profound ways and will encourage your husband or partner to provide assistance as your primary support person, within his comfort level. We all work together as a team to help you birth your baby as easily as possible.
