This poor place… For starters… Great margaritas. Delicious. Mediocre and substandard food are excusable because of how cheap it is. The thing is this place is filthy. I used to come here often because the one girl who tended bar was always really sweet. However I won’t be coming back ever again because the later evening bartender, had her foot resting on the ice well while she leaned herself up against the wall and ignored me. When I finally got her attention, I pointed out to her that that didn’t seem sanitary and maybe she should take her foot out of the ice well, that is used to make drinks. She ignored me again. So I continued trying to get her attention. Finally she took her nasty sneaker off the drink making surface. But it was just so she could go tell the bouncer to kick me out. Unless you’re broke or you just don’t care about your health, go to la Casa.

Went to Mex for taco Tuesday(2 $ tacos). Ate upstairs, had nice warm ambiance. Started with some queso blanco with tortillas. Was not a huge fan of the tortillas, but also had the salsa and chips. The salsa was very tasty, fresh, sweet and a little kick of spice. I ordered 3 tacos: chicken, pork and beef. The chicken was dry and not very flavorful. The pork was my personal favorite and the beef was also good. Overall a nice dinner, good service and a good deal.

I’m very torn writing this review. I want Mex to be good because my first experience was so great, but every other time after that, it has fallen a teeny bit short. Had their margaritas. The positive is they offer many different flavors in both liquid and frozen form but the margaritas themselves weren’t all that great. The flavor was just okay with the tequila/lime ratio being a bit off. Started off with guacamole and their house salsa. Both were fresh and tasted amazing. Unfortunately, the tacos that came out afterward were underwhelming at best. The chicken was shredded and dry with almost no flavor. Luckily the pork was tender and infinitely better. I would definitely recommend steering clear of the chicken taco and opting for pork or beef. One meal I REALLY did enjoy at Mex was their Burrito Fajitas de Pollo. It seemed like a burrito/enchilada/fajita combination to me and it really hit the spot. The onions, pepper and chicken are sautéed in a spicy sauce and stuffed into the burrito. It is then topped with a cheese/sour cream sauce. The chicken inside of this was completely different than the chicken used inside of the tacos. I opted for their rice and corn as my sides. The rice was good but the corn was standout. The corn had great flavor and packed heat, so be prepared for a kick. This is the meal to get the next time you’re at Mex!

My husband and I went here tonight for Taco Tuesday. When we walked in there was no one to be found so we walked in a little further and found the bar. As soon as the bar tender saw us she just stared at us like we had just walked into her home uninvited. I almost walked out then… We ordered a cheese dip for the chips and it was very gritty. It kinda had the consistency of a thick gravy. For our meal we got the Tuesday special. $ 2 for a hard or soft taco with shredded beef, pork, chicken, buffalo chicken, tofu, or black beans. The tacos tasted fine but we’re very basic. When I go to a restaurant I want to feel like it’s not something I could make better or something I couldn’t easily make at home. I get that they’re $ 2 tacos and you get what you pay for but I just expected better. We’d have a great server though. He was the best part of this restaurant. Will definitely not be going back though.

I like to come her on Tuesdays for the tacos because those are the nights my ex wife has the kids. Taco Tuesday’s is great deal! 2 $ for a taco and 2 $ for a tacate. Besides the food, Mex has some of the best looking staff I’ve ever seen. You go to vinyl and everyone in there looks like a bloated out rat person. I went to Murphy’s law one time and as soon as I walked in the smell was over whelming. All the staff smelt like musty old books. You never get that at Mex. Impeccable service and tasty food always. The only thing I wish Amex had was some sopapillas. I was out in Denver last week and I went to this place called Casa Bonita. The food tasted like garbage but they had these sopaillas which tasted like kisses from heaven. Just a suggestion Mex.

I’ve been here a bunch of times over the years. It is good depending on when you go. I would suggest if you are going out to make this the 2nd stop(if you’re bar hopping). Not as classy as the some of the other places on east/alexander(Ox & Stone/City Grill – see my other reviews). Good for if you want margarita’s –frozen or on the rocks. I like both. If you’re w. a big group definitely get a pitcher. It’s fun here :)

Fu rochester your food leaves something to be desired. Pretentiousness is running rampant in your town. Now on to my review… this place make tacos just like I do… only for 8 bucks I can make 20. The shredded chicken tasted like shredded bland. Chips and salsa were good but how can you f that up. Chorizo taco was your only saving grace, oh yeah try to add some flavor to your margaritas, it taste like tequila on the rocks… everyone else hooping this place up, yeah.

The food here was just ok. The margaritas were really good, we had the mango and the peach. I had tacos and tostadas, but other people has fajitas and tortas. I think the meat was pretty bland, which made the good just ok. I wouldn’t necessarily go back.

I love it here. It always seems so empty upstairs in the dining room, though. They have great food for a great price and it is always good. I highly recommend Mex for any occasion. They have been here forever so that has to tell you something. Lots of chips before you get your food so beware! Queso dip is awesome and the toasted tortillas are a nice touch instead of chips. The beer is extremely reasonably priced. You won’t spend a fortune here and you’ll leave happy. Servers could be more professional at times. But I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt that they aren’t like that all the time.

Terrible service. Mediocre food. The food was okay. Nothing to rave about. The menu said refried beans, however they’re just pinto beans in liquid. The tostada fell apart and the enchilada had a very strange sauce on it… Almost like mole, but not edible. The worst part of our whole experience was the service. The man got in fight with us over the fact that my friend couldn’t eat her food, because it was too hot to tolerate. He had told us it was only a little hotter than regular meals. He gave her an attitude, didn’t apologize, or offer her something else. When I said she shouldn’t be charged, he started arguing and yelling at us. Again, never apologized.

I have never eaten here(other than some random apps while spending a night enjoying the awesome outside seating and having some drinks). The drinks are standard fare, the margaritas(which I am not a huge fan of in general) are better than other places I have tried them. Its laid out a bit oddly and is hard to move around inside(because it is basically a house that they opened up a bit to be a bar). It is always so dark in there it is hard to even see where you are walking. It is a nice place to go if you want to spend a little time and then move on. During the warmer months if you can lock down an outside spot in the front, let the people watching commence.

Service at the bar was not friendly at all. We went upstairs to try some food and the service was very friendly, very attentive, and they even double checked with us on certain health/allergy requests. We really appreciated this extra care about getting our orders right. Even after our food came out, our server checked with us frequently. The food came out in good time and it looked great. Unfortunately everything was extremely bland. We appreciated the nice service upstairs, but probably won’t return because the food was just not good at all. We did try the margaritas that everyone raves about, and they were just okay. The atmosphere is neat, but that’s about it. Perhaps we ordered the wrong things? We knew it had mixed reviews, but wanted to give it a fair chance!

WORST service ever, bartenders are beyond rude. And the place looks like it never gets clean, I’m shocked it passes health inspections. Drinks aren’t even that good. Never going again.

The margaritas are good and they have a lot of different flavors. I went for taco Tuesday night and got a double decker chicken taco that had both a hard and soft shell, it was great! It was only $ 3 and they had $ 2 beers on special. What a deal!

We had not been here in awhile… stopped on an early Friday evening and the entire place was dead. Not sure how it is staying in business especially given that by the time we left at 7:30pm there were only three tables filled! Anyway, given that it was so empty I would have thought that the service would have been super attentive but it was far from it. The server, while friendly, disappeared for long periods of time. Again how are they still in business? The food was decent — the enchiladas with chorizo had very good spice which is unusual for most Mexican places in Rochester. Though the chicken ones while tasty were a bit dry. And the queso dip appetizer was a bit bland… There are too many other choices in town to make a return visit.

This is my friends’ fave place for getting together and the food is pretty good too. I like to order the Chicken Taco salad with ranch dressing. The chicken is perfectly seasoned and it is so tender it shreds itself. Any app you order will have decent portions for sharing. Their chips and salsa is very addicting… goes perfectly with a lime margarita pitcher to share :) They also offer other flavored margaritas, but the only one besides lime that I can stomach is the pomegranate. If you have a sweet taste for the more syrupy ones, their strawberry seems to be really popular. I only wish their kitchen was open passed 10pm since I get the hungriest then on the weekends. This place has a variety of choices for seating and hanging out. Which is probably why my friends like it so much. It has a front terrace facing Alexander st with two sides, and a good amount of nooks, tables, booths, bars inside for every social butterfly and wallflower. There is even a bar in the rear they open in the later hours, and can be reserved for private parties.

Went in with a group of about 10 people on Cinco De Mayo, which is probably their busiest night of the year. We were able to get right in, as we had called ahead and made a reservation. I had expected the upstairs area to be packed, but it wasn’t and it was a lot quieter than expected. It took forever for my group to get their food though, same goes for drinks. I eventually gave up, went to the bar for a drink, and still managed to get one before out table. Our group asked for the bill numerous times, but that even still took about 15 – 20 minutes to get. I give them credit though, even on their busiest night, everyone was still super friendly. That, and even though the downstairs area was packed, there was still plenty of room to move around and get away from the crowd if need be. The outside seating area is my fave part about this place.

One of my favorite places for a girl’s night out — simply for the margaritas. You can’t beat the price tag, variety of flavors, and serving size(they pile the frozen ones pretty high). Oh, and they’re pretty generous with the tequila, too. You’ll have to elbow your way in to order at the bar but once you do you’ll get your drink right quick. Oh, and the pitchers make margarita’s even cheaper for a large group. There’s also a bar in the back if the front room is too crowded. The food is as good as any Mexican food in Rochester, which is not very. Oh well, we do other things well.

This was a sad moment for me… You know when you wish a restaurant had its act together and embraced the one or two things that bring in their customers — in Mex’s case, it should be great margaritas and tacos. At least that’s what I want Mex to be known for… however my wish for that situation to be true fell short. This was a no bueno experience and actually made me sad. Maybe I’m still bitter that we don’t have any really great taco places in my neck of the woods. Regardless, I wanted Mex to be something it isn’t. I popped in for a margarita and taco dinner happy hour with a friend of mine since I hadn’t been to Mex in a couple years and wanted to give it a shot. The margaritas were pure tequila. I literally shuddered when I took a sip — no lime in sight. At first, we thought we were being wimpy then quickly realized it was not worth drinking so we waved over our server to have new drinks mixed for us due to the potential flammability of our current beverages. Of course, he was super sweet and apologetic and the new ones were much better. I’m not sure what went wrong with the first round or if the bartender thought they were being kind by making them«strong,» but bartenders of the world, I don’t want that. I want a well-balanced cocktail. I’m not looking to get drunk, just buzzed. Really. However, I fondly remember enjoying Mex’s margaritas of the past so that was a bummer. Then came the tacos. I ordered one chicken and one beef. Upsetting to say there was literally no flavor and the meat was dry. It needed hot sauce(preferably not the neon green one sitting on our table…), maybe some sour cream, cheese, something to add moisture and enhance the taste. Also, corn tortillas are a must. The menu said they were corn, but when two red tacos shells were placed in front of me, I had to second guess that one. The only thing I really enjoyed was the rice and beans so I filled up on those. I wanted to add a few dashes of salt, but there wasn’t a shaker on our table and that was about the same time our server stopped being attentive. Maybe someone at Mex will read my review and say, you know what Breanna, great idea — let’s get back to the kitchen and start constructing some killer tacos. I will be forever satisfied. If not, I’m sad to say I don’t know if I’ll be back…
