I stopped in to Debbie’s Diner for breakfast this week and it was a great choice. I got there as they were opening and was one of the first two customers, the other was a regular who was greeted by name. I was greeted warmly and had a cup of coffee before I got my jacket off. Nothing fancy about the place but it had the feel of a local spot and as people came in that proved to be the case. 90% of the people who came in while I was there were regulars and knew the staff and often each other. Conversations were open and it felt like anyone in the room was free to jump right in. Food wise I had two eggs over easy, grits, toast and country ham. The eggs, grits and toast were the same as you could get in any number of competent diners. The country ham stood out as it was sliced really thin and not overcooked, easy to cut with a butter knife or the edge of your fork and salty but not overly so. The food was good but the 5 stars are largely due to the neighborhood vibe of the place and the feeling that within just a few visits you could be a welcome regular here too.
