Coffee Planet

Not sure what to think. Coffee is okay, and the café just doesn’t feel cozy enough. I like the old setting with the couches. I’m also disappointed in the smaller latte menu.
I came here to work, but it seems like that was a mistake. The music is too loud, and it’s too hot.
I probably will not be back.

I stopped here because I was out and about in the suburb. I Unilocaled this place since hubby was on the way to an install in Algonquin.
I read a couple of Unilocal reviews about this place and knew that they recently had a management change. Well, they seemed to make a right decision to keep on using Metropolis Coffee.
I’m not used to see a coffee shop so spacious! I’ve not been out in Chicagoland for quite some time so I may be just slightly delusional.
We didn’t have time to stay around. Coffee was decent. They had a few specialty drinks, but I just wanted a cup of medium coffee with cream and no sugar.
They closed the drive-​thru and used the area as an outdoor patio. They tables and chairs were cute.
At least the existence of «The Mug,» or «Coffee Planet» from the old management allows me to patronize the local business.

So yeah… coffee planet no hay funciona. Tried to use my coveted check in offer for a dollar off my drink today… and was told «oh that’s for Coffee Planet.» wTF? I swear I walked into Coffee Planet. And I swear I haven’t had that much to drink today. It’s only 2000pm. Am I on Prank’d? Where’s Ashton at? I suddenly felt as if I was on some 3^rd dimension of an alternate universe on Planet Earth 347, where there used to be a Coffee Planet, is now a same shaped café with coffee drinks, slightly altered seating arrangements and chalkboards inside with hastily erased Coffee Planet logos replaced by The Mug. So I guess this review is really meant for The Mug. Will transfer review accordingly once a new business listing is up. In my initial stage of shock I took a huge swig off my latte‘. Burned my fucking tongue. Thanks a lot, Mug. Now I have no idea how my drink is.

Yet another new owner. Seems to be going for a very generic look and style. The coffee is still fine but the mural and local art are gone and it looks like the will not be offering drive thru.

They’ve changed owners and redone the place. You’d think that’s a good thing but the place is very plain looking now and they got rid of the pour-​over bar which was what I always came here for and it was what really set them apart from any other coffee joint. The people behind the counter don’t seem to know what they’re doing either. They still use Metropolis brand coffee, though, so that’s good. I didn’t see any single origins for sale though. I had a cappuccino and it was good.
I hope they figure out what they’re doing here soon before they go under because I like supporting local businesses but if you can’t be bothered to do the research and figure out proper marketing, service, your product, and your customers then you just aren’t going to last. Today was supposed to be their grand reopening and their owner isn’t even here. Their Facebook page is using stock photos with the watermark still in it and calling themselves «two mugs» but keeping the same coffee planet signs. Which is it? How hard is it to take pictures of coffee and hire a few people who know how to make coffee in a pour-​over? They shut down their drive-​thru which is ridiculous considering they aren’t doing the slow brew coffee anymore.
I really wish they’d get their $#!7 together because this place is so conveniently located for me. Time will tell.

I was here once before new ownership, after I saw that one of the partners posted anti-​gay images on Facebook I’ll not be coming back. I don’t need any bigotry with my coffee.

First time here so I have no idea what it was like before the management changed. I’m sitting here in this awesome shop right now as I type this.
First, the service is great. Both the woman at the counter and the guy on the espresso bar are friendly and helpful. They’re doing a great job with some difficult customers too. It’s impressive to watch. Very welcoming vibe.
Second, I like the coffee. I’m sipping on a freshly brewed 12 ounce regular cup o’ joe and it’s delicious.
Third, I see a sign that says they’re now open until midnight. Nice!
Thumbs up for indie coffee shops and this place is doing it right imho.
Only downside: no outside seating on this lovely day.

I work out near CP and have visited in the past. The word is the are under new management. I had the worst service, the baristas were talking poorly about their job right in front of the line (and by line, i mean 2 people). I support small, local buisnesses I will never go back here. My latte was horrible, it was almost obvious the girl had no idea what to do, and no one would help her when she asked. I couldn’t drink it and ordered a regular coffee, which was COLD. Offered to «nuke» it for me? Are you serious? I wanted to complain to the manager. which was no where to be found.
They use to use Metropolis, I do not know what they use now, but i’m sure that has changed, nothing tastes the same. What happened here? boo.

Coffee Planet over Starbucks any day, anytime.
The best part besides discovering this place is that it’s on my direct route from work to school and it’s truly a great pick me upper, especially for classes that I dread such as finance or accounting ;-)
I’ve been inside a couple of times and it’s very cozy, incredibly friendly, and has the perfect coffee house vibe, which is a rarity in the suburbs. There’s plenty of seating and it’s a great place to kick back with a book or study for exams. I usually go through their drive-​thru, which is super convenient and there are never any lines. They also have the cutest art on the outside wall of the drive-​thru.
As for the coffee, I’ve only had a couple types of drinks, including the Pumpkin Spice Latte and their Vanilla latte, which honestly is done to perfection. They also stick on the cutest stickers to the cup so that the drink doesn’t spill out — i’ve had a mustache and a cow. Love the small details.
Lastly, the customer service is excellent — I’ve had the same barista ask me to try the latte to make sure I like it before driving off. It’s definitely a great coffeeshop to try and nothing beats supporting small and local businesses!

I wish I didn’t have to downgrade from 5 stars to 1 but ever since they switched ownership, everything has changed.
1. The staff are friendly but service was slow and I was the only person there. When I ordered my drink, the girl at the register had to ask me twice what I wanted and which size I asked for.
2. The drink I ordered (peanut butter mocha) tasted nothing like it used to. I could barely taste any peanut butter or chocolate in my mocha.
3. The hours on their site still say they open at 6am Monday through Friday. I left my house early today thinking I’d stop by and grab coffee (and this is a big deal because I don’t wake up early for anything… not even work haha). When I get there… whadaya know? They weren’t open! This was at 6:30am. As you can imagine, I was not a happy camper. Deprive me of sleep and coffee? Bad idea.
I wanted to give Coffee Planet the benefit of the doubt which is why I came back to try a different drink but when I saw they weren’t even open when they were supposed to be… well that was it for me. I wish Coffee Planet the best and hope they figure out the little details before they lose any more customers.

I like that they are family owned and they really seemed committed to the coffee and tea experience. My goodness, do they have an array of various lattes and the like. I’m pretty boring and order the usual skim latte. It didn’t blow me away but I was impressed with the barrista’s precision and care in making our drinks. I also had a chocolate croissant which was just OK. Service was efficient but not particularly friendly even though they weren’t terribly busy.
I need to give this place another try and expand my coffee palate.

Coffee Planet’s the latest local coffeehouse that I’ve discovered. I’d heard good things about it from my fellow Unilocalers, but had yet to visit. Side note: I’d actually patronized the big box coffeehouse who shall not be named, which is located super close to this one. I had no idea that Coffee Planet was *that* close.
I visited on a weekend afternoon after doing some grocery shopping at Mitsuwa, which is close to CP. I mentioned to the owner that it was our first time. He was extremely friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He explained the different types of pour overs (5 total) and their latte choices for those who prefer sweeter drinks. He also pointed out their tea and caffeine free options.
As for the lattes, their choices include Peanut Butter Mocha, Girl Scout Cookie, Maple Bacon and White Lavender Mocha (WLM). I had difficulty choosing one, so I asked the owner what he’d recommend over the PB Mocha and the Girl Scout Cookie one. He went a different direction entirely and suggested I get the WLM. I went ahead and ordered it, figuring he’d know what’s up… I mean, he’s far better versed in coffee than little old me.
The latte blew me away and had me craving it the week after I drank it. In fact, my fiancé and I went back the following weekend so I could have it again. In all honestly, words really can’t do justice to the awesomeness that is the WLM. It’s sweet, but not overly so. The espresso taste comes through nice and strong. The lavender gives the latte a slightly peppery and flowery taste.
My fiancé ordered a shot of espresso both times and had no complaints. They serve it proper — in a yellow demitasse cup. All their coffees are roasted by Chicago based Metropolis Coffee. The espresso drinks are made with Metropolis’ Redline Espresso.
Price wise, Coffee Planet is the least expensive that I’ve found out of the local coffeehouses that I’ve sampled around the area. My twelve ounce drink *with* the soymilk and my fiancé’s espresso cost under $ 7, which is awesome and definitely comparable with the chain who shall not be named.
CP also has a solid selection of pastries and other food options if you’re looking for something to nosh on while you sip your beverage. You can take a seat at a high table top by the window, on a sofa, at standard tables or in a single seat next to the fireplace. If you’re in a rush, they have a drive thru. The mural painted on the wall of the drive through looks super cool too.
CP has a rewards program through LoyalTree, which can be downloaded through the Apple Store or Google Play. You earn a free drink for signing up for the rewards program. You scan an image on the bottom of your receipt to earn your points. You can earn things like a free bakery item, a free medium latte, $ 3 off your purchase, a free mug, a free travel mug and a $ 20 gift card once you’ve accumulated a certain amount of points.
The only downside is that CP is located 30 minutes away from my house. Despite that all, I know that I’ll be back to sample more of their amazing beverages. The quality of drinks and top-​notch customer service makes the drink more than worth it.
Overall, I highly recommend that you give CP a try if you’re in the area!

With a love for coffee and experience working at Caribou Coffee for a little while I started out 2014 with the mission to visit all of the coffee shops in my area. After visiting a few, I thought why not write reviews and share my thoughts on each of them. So here we are… without any further ado let’s dive right in to my unbiased review of Coffee Planet
Prior to writing the main part of this review I feel its important to say this: After going to Coffee Planet, I have a new standard for coffee shops. It was so good, I want to go back to all of my other coffee shop reviews and change them to 4 stars instead of 5. Coffee Planet is the best coffee shop I have been to thus far!
Location and Ambiance:
Its located in the same location as a Caribou Coffee before it closed. The cool thing about Coffee Planets location is the drive through. I have yet to see a local coffee shop accomplish this. In addition to this the ambiance is unreal! The owner did a great job making it comfortable and unique.
Coffee:
So many different kinds of coffee! They have pour overs, lattes, maple bacon lattes, and dozens of other coffee creations. Plus the staff has a deep knowledge of the different drip and pour overs they have.
Food:
This is the only area where they are slightly lacking, but honestly the coffee is just too good not to make up for the slight food issue. The problem I had was the pastries (brought in from another local bakery) were dry and not very flavorful.
Staff:
The staff was amazing! To keep it short, it is owned by a father and son. I met the father, and he impressed up with his kindness and knowledge of their product.
Overall, I cant explain how fantastic our experience was. In summary, it was a 30 minutes drive and I plan to make it again!

How did I not know about this earlier? (Ok my sister did tell me about this place before but I tend to space out when she talks sometimes)
I’ve been searching for a specialty coffee shop in the burbs and finally there is one! I am tired of the lack of choices out in the north/​northwest suburbs. Starbucks sucks and Caribou isn’t much better.
So I decided to stop by this place and see what they had to offer. I got myself a White Lavendar Mocha and my sister a peanut butter mocha. I can’t wait to go back and try another drink!

Family owned coffee shops just warm my little heart. It’s a personal hobby of mine to support all the local caffeine fueling stations in the ‘burbs and I am so happy I came to Coffee Planet!
They have a variety of seating which is great — high tops, low tops, booths, and comfy chairs. This is ideal when you’re like me and spend 4+ hours hanging out there with your laptop… it’s good to switch it up so your bum doesn’t fall asleep y’all.
I went with a sugar free vanilla latte and boy did it get the job done. Super tasty and the perfect pick me up. Just like Andrea R., I too highly enjoy SB’s skinny vanilla latte. Coffee Planet’s vanilla latte totally compared and may have even been better!
I love that they have a drive thru… huge selling point. I got a little hungry after being there for a few hours, so I enjoyed a gluten free fruit/​nut bar they had. I fought every urge not to go with a brownie which I’ve heard rave reviews about — just trying to watch my eating! Next time though… next time. It looked delish and is gluten free!
I’m not positive, but I believe it was either the owner or a manager who helped me with my purchase. Regardless, he was super nice and even thanked me for supporting their local family owned business!

This place loves their coffee! And so do I! You can tell from how passionate the staff explains their coffee and the whole brewing process. This place has a nice small business vibe and I love it. They have these cool looking sciencey experiment lookin’ beakers with long tubes that drip out the coffee veeeeery slowly. There’s a brew there that literally takes 24-​hours to brew! … but its almost like a science experiment ending in coffee deliciousness. I ended up having the peanut butter latte and it was awesome. As of the time of this writing, Unilocal check-​ins give you a $ 1 off!
BATHROOM REVIEW: Bathroom is a single stall setup and consists of a toilet and sink. Super clean and modern tiling and décor. Sit or squat? Sit!

I was really impressed with this place and know I’ll be a regular with all the delectable drinks and cool events they have here.
Everything from poetry slams to German language tutoring to game nights and more!
Best part is, it’s just across the parking lot from my favorite bar (Bigby’s Pour House) so I can happily swing by for some beans before getting my brew on.
For an independant coffee shop, the place is pretty huge with plenty of seating and no shortage of beverage options for you and everyone you know. They even have a drive-​thru for lazy, hurried people like myself.
My only neg is that on my first visit some of staff was running a little slow. I don’t mean that my stuff took a lone time, I just mean that maybe there were a few hangovers in the house.
I’m excited to come back and order at least two beverages for myself because it’s just too hard to make a decision when both matcha and horchata are in the mix.

I really like Coffee Planet! I have to be honest, I avoided Coffee Planet because of the name. I thought it was some chain coffee spot and just was not interested. Come to find out, it’s an amazing family owned spot!
Their drive thru is fabulous! So many corner store type coffee shops don’t have drive thrus making it slightly less convenient. The drive thru is one of the many things that makes Coffee Planet one of the best spots around!
If you decide to hang out inside, it’s a relaxed environment with a variety of tables. I’m not a fan of the high tops but it’s very mixed in table styles. Huge bonus is they have a bunch of games you can choose from while there!
Their brownie is huge and delicious for $ 2. I think that’s nearly half the price of Starbucks! I brought one into work, shared it with a coworker and we agreed the frosting on it was to die for. Über delectable!
Prices on their coffees & hot cocoas & teas are not bad at all. Comparable to other big name places.

They serve amazing Metropolis Coffee with stellar technique, skill and knowledge! We have become fast regulars here, and come to know the owners & their son, Jim, quickly! Jim gave us a sweet coffee lesson for like 45 minutes one day on their Kyoto process (seriously ask about it, it’s so cool!!) where it produces 3X the coffee power, and in the process it removes all the bitterness and is so freaking cool!
They have sweet creations, and for the coffee n00b they draw little illustrations next to what each kind of coffee (mocha VS lattee VS affogato. etc) entails so you know what you’re getting! (See my pictures!)
Every creation they make for us has been delicious and perfectly hand crafted! I usually get a spin on a Mocha by adding pumpkin spice or other fun flavoring, while my husband is always trying a new pour over, but they are so good, it keeps us coming back again and again!
They have a whole game shelf so you can challenge your friend to a game of chess, Risk, or a fun game of Apples to Apples! *see my photos for more games & interior shots*
They support local artists and currently display their artwork for sale on the wall near where you first walk in!
This is a high quality coffee shop, with a cozy, friendly feel, we absolutely love love love coming back here again and again!

Recently changed ownership.
The first thing that caught my eye was walking up to the counter and I saw this huge hourglass that appeared to be making coffee. This contraption stood probably about 3 – 4′ tall on the counter. Now that was cool. Go check it out and ask questions-​I asked questions, but I am not the man with all the coffee answers.
They have many different «specialty» drinks that are created by their baristas. I’ve tried the Café Insane-​O. «If you don’t want to sleep tonight this is for you» is what the warning I received before getting this was. 3 shots of espresso, 1 shot of cold brew from their Yama cold brew, cane sugar, and some half and half. It is surprising smooth for the amount of espresso in it.
They have some local artists’ work displayed throughout the interior and also host some live music and similar events occasionally. Stop in and check out the chalkboard for new events.
