History

Established in 1974.

Where to begin? Lun Wah Restaurant and Tiki Bar has been a local landmark since 1974. That’s nearly 40 years, long before any chain or quick serve existed, we have been producing the highest quality food with the freshest possible ingredients; impressing guests from far and wide. We are the go to place when those who have moved away and are coming home, and the place you’ve gotta bring your out of town friends to.

Despite our long history, we have found that some newer people who live in the area have never heard of us! Ask around, you’re bound to find some people who won’t go anywhere else!

Lun Wah Restaurant and Tiki Bar is 39 years young and still full of youthful vigor! We added a new manager as of September 2013, we are adding a new flare to our timeless, trendy Tiki Bar décor. Don’t judge by the cover, you have to come inside to see what is truly special!

Chris P. has been a corporate restaurant General Manager for years. It was always his dream to run his own business. Lun Wah Restaurant & Tiki Bar had been a local fixture for nearly 40 years when Chris saw an opportunity to come in and take over the business. He is now running the show at Lun Wah, preserving the same great qualities that have made it a favorite for decades while adding a new youthful flare to it. This was our first and last time here.
They did have decent boneless spareribs– just a bit greasy and a bit of fat on the meat. This was the highlight of the meal. Worst pork fried rice I’ve ever had– the rice was incredibly dry and hard. Day old rice works best for fried rice, but this had to be days old. The portion was quite small for the price. We also ordered a shrimp dish with a ginger sauce– definitely not worth the $ 17. Flavor and quality was nothing special. For the prices of their entrees, I would rather take my money to an authentic fine dining Chinese restaurant.
Maybe it’s the drinks and the ambiance that makes it popular.

This is extremely disappointing. I did not enjoy my food whatsoever. I used to come here all the time and this was some of the best Chinese food around this area. Now this is just awful. We are seated in a really bad area also. We are not comfortable. Very disappointed

I used to come here as a kid and always loved it. Now as an adult it does not get better. The crispy noodles and duck sauce are so good I could make a meal of just that. The spare ribs are really good and the PuPu platter is fun! No matter what entrée we get we are happy. We dont drink so I cannot comment on the alcohol but the food is definitely better than most Chinese places around. Service is sometimes lacking but it is not awful and you can always get someone’s attention. Huge portion sizes too. We always leave with a take home bag!

Perhaps the best Chinese restaurant in the area. And Chinese is not all they do. There is some Polynesian mixed in too.
This restaurant had a nickname that I use with friends who are visiting from out of town– «the tiki bar place». The décor of the restaurant and the mixed drink menu certainly delivers on the tropical vibe, and I love how the drink menu lists the various drink strengths along with the ingredients. Some of the drinks are even served in pineapples or coconuts which give an extra authentic appeal.
As for the food, it’s a pretty big menu with all your normal Chinese dishes and some other Pacific Islander fare. I usually go for the special combination plates which have soup, egg roll, protein, rice, and ice cream for dessert (though I’m usually too full to get the ice cream, so I just pass on it.). Their egg rolls are HUGE with a nice crispy exterior and lots of filling in the inside. The mustard sauce they give to dip them in has just the right amount of kick for me. I usually do the Ta Chien chicken as my entrée as it’s something that you don’t see on every Chinese restaurant’s menu.
Only bad thing about this place is the bathrooms. Last time I used them, they were in pretty rough shape. Sometimes when you see a substandard bathroom, you have to wonder what the food preparation area is like.

Love this place! Been coming here for the past 3 years. The food is delicious. Not one for fried rice but I tried the beef fried rice– winner! PuPu platter is always a hit! Moving on to the drinks– wow! Pay attention to the little pineapple and tikis this shows you how strong the drinks are! When I first came here there were no warnings, every drink was set up to knock you out! Lol the new owner has added some new drinks to the menu along with food. It’s a chill place to hang at the tiki bar too. The locals are always friendly and the owner even more so. We had a new waiter tonight. He was friendly and courteous. Always checked on us but gave us space to eat drink and carry on. I can tell you this– Lun Wah is busy on any given night because it’s that good! Chris does a great job of welcoming you to the experience of Lun Wah! Enjoy!

I am seriously a regular here. I used to come all the time when I was younger then stopped because I lived too far. Then I accidentally found out this was 2 minutes down the road from my job and I have been re-​hooked ever since! They know me there, they know my orders and I always get great service when I go. The new owner seems to be doing a lot to help out with the service!
I feel terrible that I don’t know her name, but the woman who is at the front is the sweetest lady! Love Lun Wah!
I’ve also been a fan of Kenny! Glad to see he is still there! Definitely going to continue my weekly trips there :)

Never would have come here if I didn’t get a solid recommendation from someone else. Located in a small strip mall across from one of my other favorite restaurants, it looks like any other Chinese Food restaurant. Inside however, you enter into a Polynesian oasis. Excellent over the top décor throughout. I took my husband to the tiki bar and we enjoyed some very well made drinks for around $ 7 each, but well worth it. The staff is very friendly and they seem to have a faithful regular crowd.
We tried the veggie dumplings, mostly because we received a Unilocal check in offer, 10% off food. They were good but nothing spectacular. The coco Loco drink was great but we were overcharged for it when we got the bill. The Mai Tai was tasty, as was the other drinks we tried but can’t remember the names right now.
We decided we would come back, enjoy a larger meal and more drinks in the future. We’ll update our review once we eat a proper meal here. Solid 3 stars.

I went here with one of my best friends and the service was… okay…well no it could have been a lot better. The place was a little busy but our waitress was annoying and wouldn’t let us breathe to talk. I felt like she was trying to rush us out because of the crowd. Though we didn’t care because we were staying as long as we wanted, wether she liked it or not. At first she couldn’t tell us what drinks weren’t strong… I felt like this place was unorganized, it wasn’t like this when I was a kid. When we were paying the bill, the waitress gave my best friend the right changed but came back and claimed it was the wrong change. So we had to wait for the right change back. Turns out it was an old lady who was taking the bill and counting the change… come on now… She looked was overwhelmed by herself.
Nah, I won’t be coming back here. The food was decent tho.

We came to Lun Wah for the first time when my 4 year old was obsessed with luaus and wanted to go to Hawaii. It hit the spot! The umbrellas in the drinks, the palm trees, the waterfall, everything was so kitschy and incredible. The service was fantastic; the woman there was so great with the kids! She brought them extra flowers, parasols, and papers fans. The food portions were massive– you could easily share a dinner. The 4 of us split a pu-​pu platter, which was not only very tasty but also fun! You have to love anything that includes fire! I ordered the egg foo young and my kids shared chicken and broccoli. We couldn’t finish everything, it was easily 3 meals worth! Even though the portions were large, the quality wasn’t spared. Anything can be customized for you and they are very accommodating. (I swapped shrimp rolls instead of egg rolls with the pu pu platter as I don’t eat pork). We’ve been back several times and have never had a bad meal or experience. Even the take out is great! Anyone who has not been here yet or wondering if they should try it out, please do! You will not be disappointed. Drinks are strong and delicious, lunch portions are only $ 6 and still large. Great service, great food and great vibes at Lun Wah. Support small business!

I’m giving this place a 4⁄5 because it is a hidden gem. You will not find another place that operates like this, from the Hawaiian/​Asian décor to the Cantonese cooking and fun looking/​tasting cocktails. Wontons, ribs, and orange chicken were all pretty good. Overall very enjoyable.

Place hasn’t changed in years… but the atmosphere is fun and what makes the place enjoyable. Shared the Volcano cocktail with my husband. It was ok. Don’t think it was as potent as they claim but it was still good. Ordered the scallion pancakes for an appetizer. They’re huge and you get a lot. They were just ok. A little too greasy for my liking. My husband and I shared an entrée… Chang Peo Seafood. It was excellent. Large portion — enough share. I would order it again.

Beef chucks are the best. One of the last of the Pu-​Pu platers in Jersey. Fast service and lots of exotic drinks, except I’m an Adult, they could put more liquor than ice? Real Hula Hula enviroment. The place is a throw back to Polynesian days of Don Ho.

just ok 3 stars fr me 2.5 from hibby. Noodles were very thick. Rice had too much soy for him, me ok. Ribs good. Soup good like NY when we were kids. Egg rolls too thick, shrimp w lobster sauce ok from me also thick. Drinks not good weak

Nice place, fun and decent food. Came here because I wanted to check it out for the kitsch factor and that aspect did not disappoint. I came with my daughter and we had the pu pu platter, two entrees and two drinks, one drink was virgin. A little pricey at $ 90 (with tip). They do give you a lot of food so we bought plenty home. Pu pu platter was good although the ribs had more fat than meat. As others have mentioned it is located in a strip mall and I would describe the area as slightly seedy but you’ll forget about that once inside the restaurant. May come here again but skip the drinks and pu pu platter to keep the bill down.

Only great things to say about this. The waiters and hosts are not only helpful, but awesome at making conversation. The short jokes they make almost make the dinner. Their specialty drinks look amazing. My table had the general tso chicken and the lun wah special Lo mein. It was amazing. My advice, check it out and enjoy.

Really bad food. I went there because I saw a favorable review in the NYTimes but I couldn’t eat more than a few bites — very greasy, gristly and bland.
The décor is not totally unappealing, though pretty dirty. Drinks are sweet and lame.

Went here for a friends birthday with a small group and we had a pretty good experience. Tasty food and fun cocktails.
Our waiter really warmed up to us once he realized we were fun! Thanks, John!
Advice: Meals portions are pretty large so consider splitting one entrée between two people, especially if you get an appetizer too. Rice sides are family style so you get a lot of that as well.
Recommendations:
Volcano cocktail and Pu-​pu platter. Both great because they include an element of fire! What??! Yes.
Our total bill was a little much but it could have been significantly less had we knows how much food we were ordering. Oops. Oh well! We still has a good time.
