The Crossing Guard at River Eves Elementary

This morning
She stood there in the deluge and showed no fear
Protected by her yellow gear
Dependable and familiar
Angry drivers that would like to kill her
She stands there enduring the splashes
The impatient driver’s verbal bashes
Standing guard, in control
Of the souls she protects and the traffic flow.
Better days we see her face under a cap
With a pony tail
Hanging down her back.
Never making eye contact
Ignoring the smiles, she does not savor
Those who would have her show them favor.
Those drivers who would have her invest
In a conflict of interest.
Like a palace guard she serves and protects
Pedestrians and bikes and four wheeled wrecks
Kids going to school or just passing by
Always there as morn grows nigh
She nods her head in a silent message
That validates your auto’s passage
Across that sacred asphalt hard
That is the protectorate of River Eves’ Crossing Guard
