They have Virgil’s root beer. That’s cool. The coffee is pretty good too. They have candy. I like candy.

Just went in here yesterday with my mother and was watched like a hawk for which I’m too assume is because I’m black that we were going to steal when if we can’t afford we don’t go inside. Now BEFORE people come to attack I NEVER play the race card because it’s overplayed for nonsense sometimes but when the store clerk was met with HIS ignorance and laughed at because who wants to steal especially in Royal Oak where I reside all he could do was bristle. No disagreement with what we observed and I didn’t want an apology that’s the way of life with people. I did watch before going in debating on if I wanted something to drink a young white girl inside that he paid absolutely no attention too staring out the door while she perused to her liking. Because of this experience I will NOT go back in and I spend majority of my time down here since I live in Downtown. I don’t want anything from this just shedding light. He may not do that to all black people but I was one who did. ONE upside to the store is they have a TON of old school soda bottle styles and sodas that have natural extracts like ginger and no sugar! Thanks.

Great location for those of us that work downtown Royal Oak on the west side(I’m lucky as it’s in my building). Solid selection of beverages, snacks, etc. ATM inside too if you need cash. They do a great job of keeping it clean and modern looking. The small outdoor seating area is nice if you want to grab a coffee or afternoon soda and take a break outside. The staff here are super friendly too! My favorite part: They have a small cooler that has deli sandwiches and wraps moderately priced. Perfect for a quick healthy lunch. I’d recommend the Greek Pita(delicious!) which comes with orzo and your choice of chips or fruit too!

I love this place. I live downtown & this is my go-to for just about everythang. Thats right every– thang. They have [good] wine & beer on friday afternoons. Monster energy & assorted other rejuvinates on saturday morning, and snacks and sammys on Monday for lunch. I have also heard that you are likely to see Meatloaf and Katie Holmes in there on occasion. Fo realz though. This place is a legit, non-shady, upscale convenience store with exceptional customer service and my go to destination when I need a quick walk.

The General Store is that 50’s shop where everybody knows your name. It’s also a life-saver. Jason is awesome!

The General Store is a great new addition to Royal Oak’s downtown area. The selection is pretty good, it seems to be expanding in variety from it’s earlier days. This place is a step up from your typical gas station or convenience store. They have some nice outdoor seating & the inside is simple but clean and feels welcoming. It reminds me of some small little deli/market type shops near Bryant Park in NYC. My personal favorite part about the place is the sandwiches that they bring in from«How About Lunch» Catering in Birmingham. ( ) It’s nice to have an option for a quick stop in. It’s a grab a premade sandwich type place that isn’t your typical fast food joint. The sandwiches are brought in fresh daily and I’ve gone there numerous times and every time my sandwich has been fresh not soggy. If they have it, try the Greek Wrap. It comes with ham, onion, banana peppers, feta, lettuce, tomato and a side of Greek Dressing. In addition there’s a little snack sized bean salad that’s really tasty that comes with it too. I also tried the turkey wrap that comes with Honey Dijon dressing, it’s tasty too. They have all sorts of beverages, I haven’t really paid attention to the alcoholic variety since I frequent the place on my work week and not weekend nights… but I love that they offer the POMx teas and Perrier. Also, they have the typical general store style candy offerings, nickle and dime style. Although I don’t think it’s for nickle and dime prices. I’d imagine kids would love that about the place! I haven’t tried their coffee but they have coffee & bagel and cream cheese breakfast options. Pretty cool, if you ask me!

a convient store with a great selection of snacks, soda pops, beers and wine. plus it has an ATM. plus it’s located in downtown royal oak. and most of all it’s NOTSHADY. they don’t have the exact 7 – 11 collection, which is what makes them cool. they have stuff that you don’t usually see in stores. like glass bottled cokes and pepsi from mexico(they are made with pure cane sugar). they also have some microwave food and some organic potato chips. they open late so it’s great to go between or after bars.

This is exactly the store that downtown Royal Oak needed! There is a perfect selection of everyday things from cleaning products and toiletry items to a great selection of beer and wine. The staff is very friendly and appear to truly appreciate your business.

I live in Royal Oak and take daily walks through downtown. Many times I wished there were a convenience store that I could stop at for a box of cereal, gallon of milk or a random condiment before dinner. There are two grocery stores about a half mile north and south of town. I’m not a fan of either and with two kids in tow, it’s just too far to go most days. This week I discovered The General Store and my life instantly got a little easier. Upon walking in I was swept off my feet with a well designed space stocked full of carefully selected and wisely chosen items. –natural household cleaners(7th Generation) –delicious beers(Bell’s, Stella & Sierra Nevada) –healthy cereals(McCann’s Irish Oatmeal) –yummy pastries and sandwiches –even little toy cars(making my kids’ day a little brighter) I am so excited to support this new business and hope it stays around for years to come.
