Once again we had our traditional apple pie and pumpkin pie from Varrellman’s. Our guests were impressed with the quality of the desert and especially that of the crust. We are never disappointed with any bakery item we order from them!

Get the chocolate frosted donuts! I have never been a big donut fan, but there’s a reason these are always sold out by noon. They are nice and light and not«doughy» at all, and the chocolate frosting coating has a very nice unique taste on all of their baked goods. The apple turnovers are a hit in the house and are nice and flaky. I would recommend giving this tiny place a look when in Rutherford. It won’t «wow» you on the inside, but it delivers a solid product.

The bakery on a whole is so good, I’ve tried almost everything. I also order birthday cakes from here and they are amazing. My only complaint is I feel that I’ve been a customer for over a year now and I’ve never had friendly service, it’s always what do you want hurry it up, it’s not very personal. For a small town of Rutherford, and being a local, it would be nice to be remembered especially when taking the time and supporting local businesses.

Cute German bakery. I felt like I stepped back in time coming to this place. The girl behind the counter was very sweet(no pun intended). Make sure you try their authentic German Strudel. AMAZING. A lot of flavors to choose from.

A hometown favorite, Varrelmann’s is delicious. I used to get my birthday cakes from here as a kid. If you’re in the area, make sure to try it. Not many small bakeries like this around anymore.

I have been a customer here since living in Rutherford almost 30 years ago. For the past 22 years I have made a special trip here from elsewhere in Bergen County because of the quality of the goods and the friendly service provided by the owner(Cathy). This is an old school type bakery in that it uses top quality ingredients and recipes that have stood the test of time. I believe that quality is worth paying a little extra for and that is why I appreciate Varrelmann’s, as they do not compromise on what they offer to their customers.

Love the donuts. Cream especially good. The fruit pastries and fruit ring are outstanding. I try to get there every Sunday. I am lost when they go on vacation.

I love coming to this local, non-franchised bakery. The Easter lamb was worthy of an award! Just stopped by today for a tasty apple crumb, which they offered to sprinkle sugar on. My family and I have been coming here for years. I love the old-fashioned feel and their coffee. What a find in Rutherford.

Authentic and the real deal. Kathy makes delicious stuff. The staff is always so kind and they will bake up anything you need for any occasion. The sugar free section always rotates and is pretty solid. I’m a big fan.

I’ve been coming here for years. Their cookies(especially the ones with the m&ms) are delicious and fresh. Some of their fillings look canned but other than that, they make most of it themselves. Most bakeries in the area are completely manufactured by now so you can appreciate the effort these people put into making fresh sweets.

I’ve been going to varrelmann’s since forever-my dad grew up in rutherford even. Great cookies, DELICIOUS old-world German pastries, and a great, family owned place.(They do have cake, btw)

Cookies melt in your mouth. Staff… Nice but a bit clueless. A very nice woman, probably a teenager, was helping me choose my selections. I pointed at each tray and she explain very briefly what was in it and almost flew by the selections. I ended up getting 2 of each cookie which were 20 cents each. I STRONGLY command getting a lace cookie. They’re chewy on the side that didn’t have chocolate and soft on the side that does. I never had a cake but they look good. Oh, and the canolies *dont know how to spell it* are great! They have bits of chocolate in the cream and then add powder sugar.

This is a classic bakery with great German specialties like their heavenly apple strudel, crumb cake, tons of cookies, cupcakes, and yes, cakes. Nothing cutting edge is being performed here, this bakery is kickin it old school style. There are around three tables total so it isn’t much of a sit down and relish your brownie experience, which is fine. It was renovated in 1975 and the holiday decorations rotate right along with the seasons. I usually grab a cupcake or the strudel and I am good to go. You can hardly complain about the prices. I’m glad it’s part of the downtown Rutherford food scene.

I must admit that I’m perplexed by Meg’s review: I have been there countless time and each time there are fresh and fluffy rows of cakes, cupcakes, ginger bread men, and any type of pastry you can think of. This bakery has been in Rutherford for years, probably before the early 80s, which is when we first move there. Anyway, the smells in the bakery is just heaven and there are very lovely and sweet people who work here.(unlike the folks who are further up on Park Ave). Go, see and judge for yourself.
