You don’t normally expect to find fresh blooms behind a couple of gas pumps, but that’s exactly what YL Event Design has in store. Seeing the budding potential in an otherwise humdrum landscape, owner Yoli LaGuerre opened a flower shop at the corner gas station next to Playland Market at 484 Forest Avenue.
YL Event Design carries premium blooms and offers floral design classes. Specializing in European-style design with an emphasis on color and variety, LaGuerre loves low and lush arrangements in unusual containers she finds in estate sales. «I have a modern, sophisticated, simple style,» said LaGuerre, who has also owned shops in Throgs Neck and, most recently, in Manhattan.
She moved to Rye a little over a year ago to enroll her sons, Kevin, 16, and Angel, 8, in the city’s excellent schools. «We’ve had a place in our hearts for Rye for a long time because of Playland and Oakland Beach,» she said. «I also love Rye’s downtown.»
It was on her commute to her shop in Manhattan that L
