Amtrak California Zephyr

In 2008 my son, who was 8 at the time, and I rode the Zephyr from Emeryville to Denver. We spent one night at the Oxford hotel which is just two blocks from Union Station. On the third day, after riding Denver light rail, we flew back to Oakland, took a cab back to the station where we had left out car. Trains, planes, buses and cars! It was one of the most memorable trips of my life and I wish I could re-​live it over and over. Just me and my son (who is obsessed with all transportation still at age 15) rolling along the tracks with some of the most impressive vistas you can imagine. We had a sleeper room and it was fine as it was just one night. We enjoyed hanging in the vista dome car and eating in the dining car where we would sit opposite other twosomes and talk about where we were from and why we were on the train. We went in July which is a great time due to the long days. It was just getting dark when we pulled into Denver so if you are going for fun go in the summer or you will miss much of the Rockies in the dark of night.

The California Zephyr is one of Amtrak’s most popular long-​distance trains running from Oakland, CA to Chicago, IL. It follows nearly the same route that the original California Zephyr took decades ago before the advent of the Interstate Highway and the decline of train travel overall. The Union Pacific Railroad used to operate passenger service, but abdicated that role to the federal government with operations now overseen by Amtrak.
My two-​day journey began in downtown Sacramento in a solo Superliner Roomette. I had low expectations about this trip, but as a train aficionado the Zephyr has been on my bucket list for a long time. The Roomette is a tiny compartment with two large seats — like first class on an airplane — with a picture window and a door. The room converts into bunk beds at night for sleeping.
The overall experience was pretty nice. It was basic, but very comfortable and quiet during the day. At night, the bedding is comfortable, but the noise and motion of the train may be too much for sensitive sleepers. When the train turns or switches tracks, side sleepers will roll over. Most accommodations use shared bathrooms which are large airplane-​style units with a separate shower. They too are basic, but kept clean and decent.
Day One took me from Sacramento to Reno over the Sierra Nevadas. I have driven this route and was initially daunted by the 5 hour travel time. Once on the train, I was glued to the window memorized by the landscape and the gentle motion of the train. Seeing Donner Pass from another angle was a great experience. The train makes several stops along the way for passengers to take a quick break to walk on the platform.
If you book accommodations, your meals are included in the fare. Amtrak serves a limited and basic menu with the best options being burgers, steak, and chicken. They do their best with the limited foodservice, but I highly recommend taking extra snacks and meals with you to help break up the monotony. Unfortunately, all the healthy options were very bad so stick to the greasy stuff for flavor.
Day Two is the real treat on the trip. You wake up in the deserts of Souther Utah and prepare for your climb over the Rocky Mountains. The train gently meanders along the Colorado River as you head to the summit. Keep an eye out for the many rafters on the river who are infamous for mooning and flashing the train as it chugs by. The scenery on this leg is truly impressive with an amazing backdrop of mountain canyons and nearly impossible cliffs as you approach 9,000 feet above sea level and the 6 mile long Moffat Tunnel before heading down into Denver just after dinner.
Truly, your journey should end after one night in the great city of Denver. Beyond the Mile High City, the journey becomes a grueling marathon as you slowly pass unending corn fields and freight trains. Between Denver and Chicago, you will often be stopped waiting for freight trains — usually nasty coal trains — and experience the most delays of the trip. This section is somewhat interesting as travelers will join you for somewhat quick connections between midwestern cities not served by Southwest Airlines.
This long journey deserved an equally long review, and if you made it through all these worlds, you are ready to book your ticket. I highly recommend a one-​way sleeper ticket to and from Denver only to enjoy the one of the best trips of your life. You can even mingle in the Coach seats if you want to see some real color!

I began my first train trip with my mom, dad, and little brother on 2÷15÷15. We boarded the California Zephyr in Sacramento heading for Colorado, so we could have a relaxing vacation. My expectations were high since I have never been on a train before. The ride to Colorado was not that bad, and I enjoyed our attendant Courtney, he was cool. Other than that the rest of the crew was unfriendly and unaccomidating, especial Grace, she was extremely rude. An elderly man was sitting with my at lunch and kept trying to get her attention, so I spoke up and got her attention for him. Her response was a very sarcastic sight and responded «what do you want», as she rolls her eyes at me. All the man wanted to tell her wad has meatballs were half frozen. That was the extent of the nasty service on the way to Colorado. Now the train ride back 2÷19÷15 (which I am currently on), has so far been the absolute worst experience I have ever had on any for of public transportation!!! Not even 30 minutes into the trip, the snack bar attendant, Todd, can on the loud speaker, and I quote «Attention, since none of you were listening to my last announcement, when I come on here and say I will be on break, that means the snack bar is closed, so if you would actually listen, you could save yourself time, energy, and frustration, and listen until I say im back and tell you I’m open.» I was utterly shocked at the condescending remarks coming over the loud speaker to everyone on the train. Extremely unprofessional coming from a government owned agency in my opinion. If this wasn’t rude enough, when my Dad asks the attendant Armando for a reservation for diner after he announced it over the radio, he responds with even more condescending and completely uncalled for remarks. He him to «go back and wait in his sleeper car» in what my Dad describes as a indifferent attitude (we were in the observation cart). I wasn’t there for the conversation they had, but when he returned to the observation car he was pretty upset. So in conclusion, I feel my $ 2,500 dollars could have been much better spent taking my family on a vacation in a rental car, plane, or hell after this experience even an electric scooter, instead of this god awful experience I have had on this train. Why exactly should I pay 3x as much, for a 10x longer trip, when the service and experience is 100x worse. I will definitely be sharing my experience with my friends, family, and co-​workers to make sure NOBODY I know will be ripped off by this god awful experience, and fall victim to the crew members sour attitudes and completely obsurd customer service. And the best part is I’M ONLY IN GRAND JUNCTION. I was going to wait to write this review, but I figured there is now way I’m going to remember all the nasty encounters I have had with the crew. And the crew is switching at this stop, so I didn’t want to blame someone else for another’s poor attitude. Never, ever, will I talk highly of this experience… except for the beautiful view. I hope this review saves some of you from wasting 48 hours of your life and $ 2,500 on an experience that is supposed to be all around memorable. If there was an option for NO stars, I would have picked it. VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!

My wife and I have just completed our journey from Chicago to Emeryville on the California Zephyr. A wonderful experience, made the better by taking a full sleeping room.
Fine service, ok food, terrific ambience.

For anyone who is even thinking about taking the California Zephyr from Emeryville to Chicago. I’m warning you not too!

My third time on the Zephyr. I ride it because my dad hates to fly, but other than that the view isn’t usually worth it for me. On this particular trip, we were 11 hours late and missed our connecting train in Chicago.
First time in the handicapped room of the train. Problems started when the air conditioning was broken. There was a constant breeze and the temperature was 50 degrees the whole way. The only thing my attendant could do was ducttape the vents with a towel. That didn’t effect the temperature at all. The attendant after delay hours started to pile up became very aggravated and didn’t want to help any passengers throughout the rest of the trip. Not a lot of patients from dining crew either.
The handicapped room was marked down at a cheaper price for handicapped passengers which was great for us! However, the restrooms were located right by our door so an array of unpleasant smells were constantly cycling through our room! Through the entire trip, we had to spray the room and each individual restroom with Febreeze we brought with us.
The dining crew had to serve us beef gruel. Not my first time getting it, I know that’s special meal the staff feeds passengers when the train is arriving late. But seeing the look on other peoples’ face was priceless as they got their «complimentary meal».
That’s not even the worst part! Our set arrival time was 2:50PM in Union Station Chicago and the train got there at 1AM!
The free hotel room that Amtrak put us in was 30 miles outside of town. In addition to more delays, we didn’t get to our room until 3:30AM, even the shuttles at Union Station are late! The room was FILTHY, the sheets were DIRTY, there was EIGHT bullet holes freshly repaired on our door. One bullet hole matched the other bullet hole in the vanity mirror across the room. I was a sleeper passenger so I would think Amtrak could afford to put me in a better quality hotel room. At least not one that had a $ 40 rate. Even after an 11+ hr train ride and countless disappointments, we had to be awake by 9AM to line up for the shuttle outside of our hotel.
The connecting train Amtrak put us on was at 5:45PM. So we waited in the lobby to listen to other Amtrak customers complain about the sam things over and over again, so we experienced a comradery there.
The many delays, without much communication from the Zephyr AND Union Station, cost us over 24 hours of our vacation in NYC. In addition, we arrived there w/​out ANY luggage because our bags were on a late train coming from Chicago.
Train Buff Talk:
This whole «late» problem began with the 440 electrical connection with the first baggage car. Most people didn’t realize the problem because it occurred in the middle of the night in Nevada. A fire started and burned up the connection between the second motor and the baggage car. They had to change the #1 motor to the #2 motor and move the baggage car to the rear end of the train. Now we had no power distributed to the baggage car to the rear end of the train so NO REAR LIGHTS!!! We were moving blindly with no tail lights for 300 MILES!!! This was an illegal action! This illegal event caused us to be 3 hours late in Nevada. We lost our travel window and we were delayed constantly afterwards because of other freight trains either passing or broken down in front of us. If Amtrak had the care to update their sketchy train equipment, we could have likely been on time in Chicago.
I understand that Amtrak is at the mercy of freight trains that own the tracks. I understand that when a freight train is coming past, Amtrak must abide by the law and stop the train. I understand that Amtrak can’t afford their own tracks. But even with all this knowledge. I expect professional attitudes and quality accommodations from the conductors, the crew, and Amtrak itself. I did not get that on my trip. I called 1(800) 872‑7245 but I still haven’t received a refund for this horrific trip. The view couldn’t even make up for the disappointment. My parents’ 20^th anniversary trip was completely ruined because of Amtrak’s way to handle service disruptions. So thank you Amtrak.

The California Zephyr has astounding views through the Rockies. We boarded in Denver at 8 in the morning, sat down and had breakfast immediately. The asparagus and cheese omelets were superb, especially because I hadn’t really eaten anything yet that morning. We went back to the private sleeping car to relax and watch the scenes out the rear of the last car, which were quite amazing as we twisted through the tunnels of the mountains overlooking the Colorado River.
Our sleeping car attendant disappeared at times, reappeared slowly and grumbly when paged, and didn’t clean the bathrooms very well. We think we just got unlucky, because other attendants seemed to love their jobs and had better customer relations skills.
The dining car was like a diner on wheels, and some members of the dining staff had no qualms about talking about the diners in front of other diners. I didn’t like how slow the lunch sittings were considering the food is mostly pre-​packaged and prepared in an assembly line fashion. Make sure you are reserved on the first seating, if at all possible, or else you may be waiting nearly two hours to be called due to the limited amount of space, and the fact that the staff likes to block several prime tables for their own workspace and lounge. By the second day of the trip, the diner started running out of several dessert options, and the lunch menu was a bit redundant (same three things offered every day).
Someone got sick in the observation car, and it took well over an hour to find someone to clean that up so that we could enjoy it without holding our noses. And that was also a health hazard.
I might have been disappointed if I had spent $ 600 per person (plus tips) for my Denver-​Portland trip, but I got my tickets using points, which are generously discounted especially because the roomette redemption did not require an additional fee for the second person! Several factors brought it from OK (3 stars) up to Yay (4 stars). One of the best parts was the MasterCard points program which made it a very affordable vacation for two people. Another aspect of the trip I liked was the on-​time performance, which was strikingly good as we arrived into Sacramento an hour early despite being prepared with the worst expectations. Finally, the wonderful «Trails and Rails» program which had knowledgeable tour guides accompanying us in the observation car, is a great part of the package and one that we absolutely appreciated.

I would highly recommend taking the train for SHORT distances. I will definitely consider the Sacramento-​Reno ride in the future. However, I do NOT recommend riding in coach class for longer distances. Here is the BIG problem: the restrooms are horrid. They are tiny (picture the bathrooms on airliners) and it seemed that no one cleaned them the entire distance between Chicago and Sacramento. Except for one restroom that is marked «Ladies Lounge» the restrooms are unisex. The problem with this is that (sorry guys) the men make them unusable for women. Aparently, the men stand in front of the little alcove where the toilet is and hose it down with urine as the train bumps and sways. It is on the walls, floor, and all over the seat. One needs to clean the bathroom before they can use it or be standing (or sitting) in a puddle. If passengers are to be required to clean up the bathrooms in order to use them, Amtrak should provide Clorox wipes. Bottom line: If you are bent on taking the train cross country, pay the additional $ 600 — $ 700 for a sleeper compartment where you have a private toilet.

My third journey on the Zephr. A great train ride and views you would not have had otherwise. My journey was short. Emeryville to Truckee California. Short and sweet. Sat in my coach seat for all of 30 minutes and spent the rest of my 5 hour journey in the Dome Room right before the Dining Car. Panoramic east and west views. The journey through Donner Pass was one that never fails to amaze me.
Suggestions: bring your own snacks or meals and drinks. It’s pricey on the train and limited in selection.
My wish: I will ride the Zephr again and maybe, just maybe, I will ride it the end of the line in Chicago, Il.
Amtrak station Emeryville: clean and comfortable.

From Reno to Richmond, I had a good time and was able to see outstanding scenery on the way down. There was a ton of snow and the highways had closed down, but surely enough, Amtrak would trek through and get me to where I needed to be. The train is very smooth, no turbulence, and the attendants are way nice. No complaints. Oh, and I got to where I needed to be 1hr early :)

I spent 4 days on the trains between the Empire Builder, the Coast Starlight and the California Zephyr. The choices of meals were basically the same on the Zephyr and the Empire Builder. Maybe one item different. The Starlight has a Parlor car for the Sleepers and they served two entirely different items there.
The Cheeseburger is great for lunch but I got a little tired of it by the 3^rd day. Moved to the chicken sandwich.
For dinner, I usually had the flat iron steak medium rare. That was very good.
The dining staff were better than the other trains. I actually saw a smile on our waiter.
I agree with other reviewers. All in all, the prices were little high given the amount/​quality. But you’re a captured audience at this point.

Not my first or my only Amtrak dining car experience. The Empire Builder is better I think, overall, but this was plenty fine. If they ran out of something toward the end of the trip, they did their best to make it up to you. For example, my husband ordered the chicken Caesar salad on our way home, and they were out of chicken. He said «Can I get bacon instead?» and they had to check, but they totally did it for him.
Food is always tasty, though options are limited (it’s a train, people, what do you expect??). I’ve never had a problem finding something I like on the menu, and I have to say that I will never tire of the spicy black bean burger. I CRAVE those things now! So good.
A bit pricey maybe if you’re dining a la carte, but if you are a sleeper car passenger it’s a great deal.
Also I should note, if you like to dine alone and are the sleeper car you can have them bring you your dinner. Not sure if they’ll do that for lunch/​breakfast though. It can get tiresome to have to be friendly and make small talk with strangers when you’re worn out from travel and just want to EAT.

I’d been wanting to take the CA Zephr from Saramento to Reno for many years so I paid the $ 281 for myself, wife and 7 yr old daughter (she had never seen snow), to go over by train and come back on the bus. We decided to have lunch in the dining car, the food was OK but, could have gotten better tasting hamburgers at an In-N-Out.Total $ 38.00). I was overcharged by $ 7.00 and while I was talking to the waitress about this, another waiter decided to take my wife and daughter’s food (while they had gone to the bathroom) before they had finished. When informed of this they did bring half a halburger and some chicken nuggets to replace the food they had taken. I had to leave but my wife told me the waiter had been very rude to her. Suffice it to say they did not get a tip. In Roseville we were informed that there had been a derailment in Colfax and so they provided a bus to go the rest of the way. I called Amtrak customer service and was able to change the transportation from bus to train for the next day. The trip back was great as it was clear and sunny and the views from the observation train were awesome. The train trip takes about 5 hours. I would recommend the trip if you’ve never done it but avoid the dining car, it is among the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had.

This morning I had the rudest attendant help me while i was trying to pick up my ticket for the 525 train from Sacramento to Emeryville. She took forever to get to people waiting in the huge morning line, even asking some if they could «hold up» while she checked her email. When I finally got to her window, I told her I was trying to make the 6:20 train, and she told me to forget about making it cause I wasn’t gonna be on that train. Taking her hand to motion that I «settle down «…And adding if I was smart I would have gone to the kiosk (I had already done that by the way)! I left late for my train, and having to wait for the next. Oh by the way the attendants name was Sophia.

The clear downside to taking a cross-​country train trip is that in the course of more than 3 days of train travel in each direction, you will, at some point, be hungry. Sure you can schedule a restaurant stop during your layover in Chicago or bring food on board to snack on, but you are not going to make it all the way across without eating in the dining car. They’ve got you. And it doesn’t matter if you are in a sleeper car or in coach, as both classes of people eat in the same dining car, and eat the same food; the only difference is that the food is free for the first class passengers, and it is very overpriced for everyone else.
I was in first class, and I was not prepared for the gruesome food. Any thoughts of the food being comparable to the food in the first class Amtrak Acela car (which can be exceptionally good), were quickly gone when I saw the daily menus. The choices were limited, lackluster, and sometimes just terrible. I will give a rundown:
French toast: thick, dry ciabbata bread, topped with powdered sugar and tiny serving tubs of packaged syrup (diner-​style). I imagine an egg solution was involved at some point, but really it just tasted like dry bread with cheap syrup.
Pancakes: Tasteless, and neither dense nor airy. More cheap syrup.
Scrambled eggs: They are not scrambled by human hands, and they taste microwaved and awful. Ugh.
Sausage patties: Okay.
Salads: 3 pieces of lettuce, 2 cherry tomatoes, 1 slice of cucumber, and your choice of Paul Newman dressing packet.
Cheeseburger: Not too bad actually, though salty and strangely served with chips; fries are not a menu option. Same burger as in the café car, apparently.
Chicken pot pie: Thin, with a minimal amount gelatinous filling and upwards of two small chunks of chicken and perhaps a couple of peas. Dreadful, though edible; reminiscent of toaster food.
Cubano sandwich: Oh, surely you gest. I finished it though, as mushy and un-​Cubano as it was.
Roasted chicken: Half a bird, and it’s not dry! Too bad for the terrible mixed vegetables that are served with it.
Pork chop: The best of the best. Thick, juicy, and the sauce was palatable.
Crab cakes: They have to suck, right? Um, not bad actually. Go figure. As good as previously frozen seafood gets, I suppose.
Steak: Maybe choice meat, maybe aspiring choice meat. Very, very juicy; possibly pumped with a nitrate solution to preserve «freshness». It made me sick.
Chocolate cake: Served at 35 degrees and nearly impossible to put a fork through. Looks like a hockey puck.
Cheesecake: Not like any I’ve tasted, and not in a good way.
Ice cream: Choice of flavor, Haagen-​Dazs; go with the chocolate peanut butter.
Lemon coconut cake: Passable.
Tiramisu: The best damn thing on the menu; it will disappear immediately so order it if you can. They serve these in Acela first class too.
The service? Often incompetent, usually neglectful, and sometimes rude. One gentleman ordered an ice cream, and it was thrown down on the table before him so hard, it made a resounding whomp that had everyone sitting upright. Yikes! Ordering alcohol was interesting too: «pea-​no-​nor», «some kind of pale ale», etc.
Oh, and it is all communal seating unless you have meals sent to your sleeper car. This means you will share dinner with some — very — interesting people. You will have a collection of stories by the time you are done. It’s an experience.
None of the food is worth paying for, so try to get a sleeper car if you can.

We took the CA Zephyr to Chicago, and while we had a (slight) problem with crashing into a too-​close crane in SW Nebraska, the food on the train was AWESOME (well, except for the chicken-​it was overdone).
Flatiron steak, medium rare can’t be beat!
Ignore the ⁶⁄₂₀₀₉ review which lists the food as «crap». It is NOT.

Better than greyhound. Train is way more cleaner than greyhound.

LOVE riding the train to SF. You can get so much work done and not be bothered by the traffic. Some times is just nice to sit back, relax and snooze all they to SF or back to Sacrmanento. They even have a snack car so no worries if you get hungry or don’t have time to eat before boarding.

With great anticipation, I have tickets for the West Bound California Zephyr to Sacramento through to Emeryville and points West.
The adventure starts by calling a cab at 6:30 AM. By 7:30 AM, the cab has not showed up, so I walk down to the bottom of the hill, and wait two minutes for RTC 17, which cost me two bucks.
At just before 8 AM, I walk into the Reno Amtrak station, and the train has been «cancelled.» Last night, there was an electrical fire, and the train was taken out of service.
With an 8 AM meeting at Harrah’s Starbucks, I march off to the meeting, knowing that at 11:30 AM there is an Amtrak bus that will deliver me into Sacramento, and I can transfer to the Capitol Corridor.
After a two and half hour client meeting, I walked off the to the train station as the bus was coming in. I showed the driver my Zephyr ticket, and he said «come on, I will take you to Sac.»
Arriving at the Amtrak Station, I have an hour to kill, and I have not had lunch. I called Mountain Mike’s Pizza, (916) 372‑8984, and they delivered to the train station.
I had a great lunch, at the Amtrak station. After I finished lunch, The Capitol Corridor train arrived, and I rolled off towards Emeryville. The California Zephyr was on the siding, with all of the passengers huddled into one car.
I have dined on the California Zephyr many times, and I recommend it. Last week, I had the Spinach Salad, with grilled chicken. It was an excellent value, and is paired well with California Chardonnay.
Rolling into Emeryville, there was no cab waiting. Waiting for a cab at Amtrak is unacceptable, so I caught the FREE Emery-​Go-​Round shuttle to the BART station.
In order for me to arrive at home, I need to find a taxi to Montclair. There was no taxi at the BART station, so I took the hospital shuttle to Kaiser Oakland Hospital. By walking one block with my luggage, I was able to catch an AC Transit bus.
AC Transit has gone through many budget revision cycles, and customer services seems to have been placed in the back of the bus, without any support. At one time, AC Transit supported transportation needs, with routes designed by local planners.
Somewhere along the line, planning was outsourced, and there is no relationship between the needs of the citizens and the bus network delivered.
In order for me to take the bus, I jumped on the CB to Thornhill and Mountain Boulevard. At that point, it is a mile and half walk, with luggage. In the not so distance past, I could take the 59 to Thornhill and Woodhaven, and walk one block to my house.
Those days are over, as there is no bus service to Forest Park. It has been an adventure, and I will give the California Zephyr another chance next Sunday.
The day of the non smoking train has arrived, and I hope to enjoy a direct route instead of all these transfers. OK, that is not fair, since it did not happen for the first forty years of the rolling stocks existence, it probably will not happen again.
Then, again, is there something wrong when our trains are forty years old, and there seems to be no plan to replace the rolling stock. Bring back the City of San Francisco, linen on the table, and a real dining experience.

O.k. took the family to Chitown over Easter break. We read about the Ca Zephyr, and thought it would be neat for our kids to see the US via choo choo. The trip would have been great had we not arrived in Chicago 22 hours late. To there credit the staff was great and the food was better than just fuel. The train was delayed because of Southern Pacific, who owns the tracks and does what ever the f***k they want.

Your choice is beef stew.
Wait staff was friendly and somewhat discombobulated, in an endearing way… you just new your order would be a little amiss.
We had a room which included all the meals. That’s the way to travel people!
bam we get on the train and we had yummy Green Mountain Coffee in our hands and we were soon eating a bland lunch with delicious strangers…
1^st day lunch. I ordered the Angus beef cheeseburger… not so good. I do not recommend it. Z got the chef special which was Turkey with all the fixings looked fairly good. I had just about had enough of the tryptophan and had been zombied out from all my turkey left overs… hence the hamburger
2^nd day lunch I had the chicken sandwich with bacon on a kaiser bun which was decent. Much better tasting than the hamburger.
At Dinner I got the salmon and Z got the Beef Flat Iron Steak and we shared so we had a surf and turf thang going on. I really enjoyed both entrees. they were both tasty
2^nd day dinner I ordered the half of a roasted chicken with veggies another solidly good meal.
desserts choices for lunch and dinner included New York Style Cheesecake, Hagan daaz individual ice cream in vanilla or chocolate, lemon tart and some peanut butter chocolate slice of heaven that Z got. I’m proud to say i tried them all! and they were all yummy– faves were the lemon tart and the peanut butter chocolate thing. You definitely walk away stuffed.

Downside paying big bucks for a room and running out of food and water!!! 1^st to go was the salad dressings, then many choices off the menu, they ran out of breakfast. so many people did not get to eat any breakfast they ran out of bottled water and last meal they ran out of everything off the menu and made up some beef stew which they gave to all the passengers. There excuse for the daily running out of stuff was that it was a new menu. by the time they ran out of water… it was stupid funny what could you do or even say at that point? whateva… inventory hello?
