California State Controller – John Chiang

What a nightmare!!! No different than dealing with a court clerk’s office. These government employee people are SUPER slow and anal retentive nit-​picky about the paperwork. I was even told that I needed a «pour over will» when the person reviewing my claim should have realized that the 2 claimants were the last surviving heirs. After spending months searching for a «pour over will» that I could not find I asked if it mattered that we were the only heirs left and finally got told the correct answer. The bottom line is that I had to do THEIR job and be my own lawyer otherwise I never would have collected a dime from these gatekeepers. By the way it took about 2 ½ months to cut and mail a simple check! Absolutely pathetic. If this was a normal public company they would go out of business. Instead it’s government employees who cannot be fired and are set for life with their lavish pensions. By the way I see that most of the supposed «reviews» about this office are nothing more than political cheerleading for John Chiang.

Unclaimed Property Nightmare! No one knows what they are doing… I can’t get to a superior… No one takes ownership of any process… NO is the answer to everything. Between myself and the state, I believe we’ve spent more on man hours and postage then the actual property value (sarcasm). I have received more denial letters that are incorrect or for things that have already been resolved it’s unbelievable.
THEN get this one. I was told a check was cut on 7÷10÷12 to my client after 2 years of jumping through flaming hoops. Then I followup and was told that it was sent to my attention… then another followup was told it was sent to my compliance managers attention. THEN I get a denial letter in the mail in which I call to find out it’s for an issue that was resolved back in 2011. Not a check!
I’m completely baffled and beyond words at the level of incompetence this office is managed under. I feel like I’m calling the person I accidentally cut off on the freeway this morning on the way to work and they are trying everything in their power to enact revenge on me.
I’m waiting on the denial letter I get for this review or better yet it will most likely just be ignored.

SITREP
It is rare when a technocrat actually has a long-​range vision for the State of California. It is even rarer for me to say that I actually believe what this politician has to say since I tend to be such a skeptic.
However, California — and we citizens — would be a lot worse off if it had not been for the business acumen of John Chiang to keep in check the reckless politics of former Governor Arnold Scharzenegger.
INTO THE FIRE
I first really became aware of Chiang in July 2008, Schwarzenegger was gonna «slash the pay of more than 200,000 state workers to the federal minimum of $ 6.55 per hour,» among other measures, due to a lack of an approved state budget.
However, I believe Chiang was dead-​on in calling Schwarzenegger’s idea «a poorly devised strategy to put pressure on the Legislature to enact a budget» and stated that he would continue to pay state workers their full salaries. (July 24, 2008 SF Chronicle.
GOVERNATOR-​PROOF
In the end, Chiang (one of the few constitutional elected officers in California that the Governor could NOT fire) stood up to Schwarznegger, demonstrating that he in fact had both constitutional and statutory authority to continue payments and that Schwarzenegger was trying to make Chiang do something illegal.

You want to find an honest politician — one who really acts as if the government is supposed to be there to help you? Search no further than John Chiang. If Arnold would have been willing to listen to John, we’d have more money in our state treasury than we do now.

It’s rare that someone will give you free money without asking you to either figuratively or literally «bend over» before receiving it.
John Chiang is the exception. The man and his office exist to reunite you with your money. Seriously folks… We live in a country that if it finds unclaimed funds… holds it for the rightful owner and makes an effort to reunited the 2 lost souls. That is so rare !! I love the USA because of the process flow as indicated below.
USA– 1. No bending over 2. Receive money
Other Countries– 1. Bend over 2. Get Fucked 3. Get charged for fuck
Yeah, I might want to live in another country from time-​to-​time and maybe for only a year or so… but this land is awesome and I want my kids experience the joy of receiving an unexpected check for $ 205.
