At CASA de ESPAÑOL, we believe that learning should be fun! Our #1 goal is to bring Spanish to life by facilitating culturally enriched activities and providing real-​life practice. We offer classes for kids, ages 4 – 9, and a recreational and immersion program for adults from basic to advanced levels. We cater to the needs of the busy student by offering evening classes and interactive on-​line activities that can be practiced at home or even on your phone.

Our innovative in-​class and on-​line curriculum emphasizes speaking, listening, reading, and writing, and is adapted to the learning needs and goals of each student. We also coordinate group outings and opportunities for our students to speak Spanish in their communities, as well as group and individual study-​abroad opportunities with our partner-​schools in Spain and Mexico.

History

Established in 2011.

We’ve grown to form a strong community where Spanish speakers and learners alike can come and explore the rich cultures of Latin America and Spain. On top of language classes we offer group travel excursions, cultural events, dance classes and various workshops. Come see we what we’re all about.

For the past seven years, María has been dedicated to fostering love and appreciation for her heritage language and the many Spanish/​Latino cultures. She taught K-​5th grade Spanish at Montclair Elementary in Oakland, was an adjunct Spanish professor at Holy Names University, and also taught Spanish at Saint Mary’s College High School in Berkeley, where she received the Lasallian Educator of the Year award.

The staff is highly qualified, dedicated, caring and go the extra mile to ensure that their students learn. I have been attending Casa de Espanol for a little over 2 years. I love this place! I am a retired RN and have had a lifelong dream of learning to speak and read the beautiful language of Spanish. I began with Basic 1 as I had very little previous Spanish instruction. I am now a student in Advanced 3!
Because of the phenomenal teachers as Maria and LLamia, I am now able to speak, understand and read Spanish!
Maria is very intelligent, kind, and patient with all of her students! Class sizes are very small, allowing for much individual attention. Maria also has an incredible sense of humor which makes going to class «muy interesante!» Never a dull moment, learning and having fun at the same time.
Run, don’t walk, to sign up if you want to learn Spanish!

I love this place! I highly highly recommend it for kids and adults to learn spanish. My daughter attends classes every session and summers too.
My daughter didn’t know any spanish her first day April 2014. She can read and speak spanish. She is 5 in a half. She always tells me how much fun she has and always asks me when will she be going back (when she is in between sessions). She loves to give all her teachers hugs goodbye and leaves with the biggest smile.
She was really SHY when she first started. She loves her teachers and looks up to them. They teach with singing, dancing, writing, games, flash cards, crafts, special guests and more.
Some of the things that my daughter has learned: days of the week, math, Latin American history and culture, months of the year, counting 1 – 100, alphabet, colors, shapes, food, animals, clothing, places, family, professions, pets, verbs, directions and MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH MORE…
Teachers are native speakers and the SAME teachers are there since we started!!! Amazing customer service! They ALL care about the students and are very involved in teaching. The teachers sit on the floor, dance and sing in order to teach spanish.
Plus, it is a locally owned business. They are very professional and respond to my messages or emails within a day.

What a great school. I always wanted to learn Spanish. I thought of doing tapes or on line but never followed through.
The Casa de Español is perfect. I started to learn right away and the small classes allowed personal interaction with the teachers. Not only is this school a fabulous way to learn spanish but they also introduced you spanish speaking cultures with after hour events.
This school is truly a gem. If you want to learn Spanish, go to this school. You will not regret it.

Casa de Espanol offers Spanish language courses of various skill levels ranging from Basic to Expert. They also have weekly practice sessions where you have conversations with a person who uses Spanish as their primary language. They use a structured syllabus, online quizzes, and reading material. The class size seems to vary from 5 – 10 people. The instructors are kind and seem to enjoy teaching. It has been a great experience and I will be back.
The only negative I found was the individuals performing the practice sessions are not teachers and are learning English as their second language. It is a good idea, but unfortunately some of them are not very good at including you as part of a group if you are the one struggling to understand what is being said. It is easy to feel abandoned from the group and unable to participate. I did not experience this with all practice sessions — Only some of them.

Casa de Espanol offers excellent Spanish language courses, geared towards all levels. The courses also offer online tutorials and opportunities for free conversation practice outside class hours. Maria, the primary instructor, is one of the best teachers I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. She is energetic and engaging, and her passion for the Spanish language is contagious. I cannot recommend this program enough!

I went to Casa last night for my first spanish class here in Sacramento. I really, really enjoyed my experience.
From the beginning, the school is very flexible and has excellent communication. They gave me a 20% discount AND they told me about the payment plan option through paypal. (Score!)
Maria is a very welcoming and wonderful teacher. She’s also funny and makes the material interesting.
I am enrolled in Basic I and there’s a good group of people in there, ranging from professionals to retirees. I feel like it is fun and there is no pressure to be perfect.
They also offer intermediate and advanced classes. I appreciate that they also provide outside opportunities to speak spanish with others — so I can get my practice on.

Despite assuming I could never learn Spanish — lo and behold, I could! Maria is an excellent teacher who delivers the material in a way that is simple, palatable, and allows one to gain comfort quickly before moving on to more complicated concerns within the language, giving the student a sense of confidence to tackle things like grammar and irregular words. The school is growing with free evening opportunities to talk to native speakers and other students in our new-​found tongue, the opportunity to be partnered with a native speaker to support one one-​another in learning language and opportunities for group travel to spanish-​speaking countries. The materials for class are affordable (10 years ago I paid $ 300 in college text books for one semester of German while in college, the course materials here run under $ 50). All in all, Casa de Espanol makes language learning easy, affordable and fun. I’ve been on hiatus for the summer but look forward to returning.

Having never taken a Spanish class before, I was very nervous to put myself out there. What a ice surprise to find this place and the owner, Maria. She is so lovely, patient, smart and enthusiastic about teaching! I love going to class. The small class size is great and Maria makes the difficult task of learning a foreign language fun

Without a doubt the best Spanish class I have taken to-​date. Maria is an extremely gifted instructor with the patience and positive personality to ease the individualized learning process. My two kids attend Casa de Espanol after school. They have been going for 4 weeks now, and already they are busting out words in Spanish randomly. Like, «Mom, can I have a glass of agua please?». Music to my ears.
The classes are fun, engaging and usually include an art project or games. Maria keeps the kids engaged and enthusiastically teaches them through songs, games and lessons.
If you are looking for an after-​school program for your kids, this is your place.

I don’t have the words (in English or Spanish) to recommend Casa de Espanol and Maria enough. This series of courses has been an incredible experience.
Here’s why
1. Flexibility. This format isn’t like university classes. If you miss a class you can go to another. If you struggle on a topic Maria takes extra time to make sure you really understand. There are only about 6 students in each class so you really are attended to during class and outside. She emails back quickly and can produce specialized materials if you need them. She did a whole lesson plan for me and an upcoming trip I’m doing.
2. Cost. This program is soo reasonable. For amount of one-​on-​one attention you get I’d imagine it would be really expensive. But it’s not! It’s cheaper than community college.
3. The students — Everyone wants to be there. The classes are very small and are mostly professionals or retirees. There is zero pressure and everyone is really nice. No matter your proficiency you are comfortable.
Can’t say enough good things. When I come back from my trip hopefully I’ll be in her advance class. Then when I have little ones I can bring them to Casa so they can learn from the time they are little. :)

Okay, I’m a fan because CASA de ESPAÑOL took a bold step to open a new business in this difficult economy. And… opened it in Midtown Sacramento where we are looking for a more diversity in our business sector. It’s muy bien that they chose something so completely novel as a Spanish-​language school. I have been wanting for muchos años to renew my love-​affair with Spanish. Other courses were either too short, too expensive, or too inconvenient. CASA de ESPAÑOL is none of those things. So I signed on for eight classes which begin January 9th. What a beautiful way to start the Año Nuevo — learning something!

Maria Harrington, the creator of Casa de Espanol, is a versatile teacher who is able to relate her curriculum to her students so that all pupils are able to comprehend and grasp the material she teaches despite different learning styles. She is engaging and fun while simultaneously educating, and she commands respect in the classroom immediately. Not only is she a great educator, but is also a wonderful role model, mentor, advocate, and friend.
