Courtyard Sacramento Cal Expo

I travel all the time… and I I have status with Marriott, so I almost always choose a Marriott property. I have recently started to make the Courtyard Cal Expo my place to stay in Sacramento… the price is right, and it really has surpassed my expectations for a Courtyard. Part of it is that I do have status… and on arrival they allow me to grab something from the ministore in the lobby… and they often upgrade me to a suite. They also give me a breakfast voucher… you stand in line and order at the food bar… good choices for breakfast and better than what I would get at a Marriott.
But it’s really the people that I like at the hotel… from the front desk to to Cory at the bar (she is great and remembers your name!) to the breakfast staff… they all go out of their way to make you feel welcome.
It is near the mall which has many restaurants… and it’s pretty easy to get into town from there if you have a care.
So kudos to the staff at this property for making the hotel so welcoming.

Typical Courtyard with the things I appreciate. Strong wi-​fi, clean and comfortable room. However, this one is right by the freeway, and while I appreciate the ear plugs provided on the desk, it didn’t make up for the crappy sleepless night. Pass.

I have stayed at the Marriot courtyard countless times in the past. The only reason I chose this option is bc they have always proved to be consistent with their rooms and service. Unfortunately I did not have the best experience this time. Thus the two stars. Check in was normal and the room is decent, clean and comfortable. What was upsetting to me is later in the evening I could not find parking anywhere! I asked the guy in the front desk if there was anything he could do or if he could tell me where to go. He was so unhelpful and insensitive telling me there’s nothing he could do and not to park in the handicap. Thanks captain obvious. He told me to go park on the street in front of the hotel. A guy came to talk to me in the same lot who was looking for parking and his hotel manager (it’s another Marriot under much better management in the same perimeter) made parking spaces for their guest. Just had them park in the middle assuring them that they will be fine. Super accommodating. I didn’t park there bc I guess it’s just for that part of the hotel. There was ‘no parking’ signs all on the streets so I was misguided there. Closest parking was like a mile away. I ended up risking it and double parking on a fence. I was fine thankfully. I am very upset at how I wasn’t even given correct information on where to go and he was so insensitive. I had bad customer service. Also at check in I was told that there is free complementary breakfast. Then in the morning the lady with attitude told me that there never has been free breakfast at this courtyard and I would have to pay the restaurant fees. Well sorry miss maybe make sure all the dam staff are on the same page! Sorry for my rant guys. I just hate rude and insensitive people. Completely ruined it for me. It’s not the annoying fact that there was no parking but there insensitivity and lack of help is what made me have a bad experience. I would definitely pay an extra few dollars and stay at a better hotel next time in Sacramento.

Above average room accommodations — very clean, and spacious work area.
Decent cooked to order free breakfast menu — Plenty of quick and healthy options
Free WiFi, Free Parking and friendly front desk

This couldn’t be a Marriott property. I have been repeatedly impressed with the quality of Marriott’s room accommodations and the simple class that separates Marriott from the average hotel. Here, the odd smells, the cheaply made furniture, the paper thin walls — I could hear those above, below, and the the highway and train commotion outside –had me feeling I was staying at a low end hotel «near the tracks». I stayed far too long and at the moment regret it. The cleanliness and employees were up to Marriott standards, which is really quite high, but I’m amazed at the difference between other Marriotts and the quality of this building. Now I have to question future reservations at all their hotels. Honestly that bothers me.

The room was clean, spacious, and comfortable. However, I don’t think the upgraded bed justifies the price difference between the Courtyard and Fairfield Inn. I appreciated the bistro and Starbucks in the hotel. The customer service was decent but it seemed as if something was wrong with the hotel’s reservation system because my reservation was lost and everytime I passed through the lobby another guest was dealing with the same problem.

I was desperate to get away for at least one night with my girl and our kids. She called directly and made a reservation over the phone for two queen adjoining rooms. Because we wanted to get there a little early she called to confirm our reservation and request an early check-​in early the morning of our arrival.
When checking-​in we were told the guest in the room we had reserved just requested to extend their stay and no other adjoining rooms were available. This was a BIG deal — we were traveling with two kids, ages 16 and 8. We didn’t want them going in and out of the room through the main door, especially at a hotel we were not familiar with. The hotel made it right by reducing our room rate and breakfast vouchers but… while I am sure there is protocol for this type of thing, as a consumer I feel the hotel should have found another room for the guest who was to be leaving vs. inconveniencing the ones checking in. If I were the other person, I would expect the hotel to say yes ONLY IF they were not at capacity and had a room to accommodate the incoming guest (s).
The only other negative were all of the rowdy kids at the pool late at night. They were jumping off the chairs into the pool and pushing each other in on top of the kids in the pool. There didn’t seem to be much adult supervision and after a minor issue and my girl’s comments about the kids making her nervous most of them left.
With that said, the hotel is very nice. It’s clean and well appointed. There is a gym, they serve Starbuck’s in the lobby and the staff were very friendly.
The rooms were nice although I’m not quite sure about the wallpaper pattern (see photo) and the dead bugs in the bathroom lamps were a bit gross.
For the price, location and amenities I would definitely come back again.

The room was very clean and the beds where very comfortable. Memory foam beds. Not bad for the price I booked the room for.
The reason I am giving a 4 stars is the situation I saw at pool side. There was a party going on at pool side and all the chairs where occupied. Everyone in the pool was part of the party. Not all of them where guest in the hotel for sure.
I say these because hotel guess when the go to the pool, they do not dress up like they are going to a party. They wear swimwear. I picked this hotel expecting a quite time at the pool since it was intimate in size.
It is still worth staying here if the price is right. I just hope management monitors the pool area or a least instruct staff to be on the look out for situations like this one. I saw at least 2 staff members walk by. Its sad we guest did not get to even try out the pool

Recently stayed here for one night on Fourth of July with my husband and we thought it was great! Very clean and the front desk staff are very friendly and helpful. We were acknowledged upon arrival and Alicia who checked us in was courteous and informative. I appreciate that she let us know the hours of operation for The Bistro and gave us directions to get to our room.
The lobby is well kept and had comfortable couches, computers for guests to use and multiple TVs. There’s also free wi-​fi for all guests and a swimming pool which comes in very handy for the hot Sacramento weather. The location is very convenient to the freeway and the Cal Expo which is another reason why we chose to stay here. Definitely coming back here in the future when we’re visiting overnight.

3 stars where there should be 4
The Marriott is wonderful I have stayed at several throughout the states. They are typically consistent and you know what to expect, large, clean, open rooms. They are even brave enough to use white duvet covers however the 3 stars is due to a new policy the company is enacting.
If you book through a third party (Expedia in this case) you have to pay a $ 250 security deposit upon arrival, and no of course you don’t know this before hand (probably in the fine print somewhere). Okay fine… the company is protecting itself that I can get over but it’s the constant reminder from employees and signs alike that you are beneath anyone who booked directly from the Marriott website. The front desk receptionist brought it up 3 times and told us how awful it is for her to have to drop the «$ 250 surprise» on guests.
Here is a suggestion instead of having employees scold guests and plastering your walls/​desks with signs informing guests of the «punishments» of booking third party why not write the benefits of booking through Marriot.

Great rooms! Very clean and the staff is amazing. The housekeepers keep the rooms very tidy daily. The front desk was always willing to help. It looks like they recently just updated the 3^rd floor rooms in building E. Very modern and the beds are very comfy. Rooms are very spacious. The hotel is in a Plaza with the rest of the Marriotts. All stores and everything are close by. About a 5 10 min drive. I5 and 80 are both super close. Overall great location and had an amazing stay! Would definitely stay here again.
THE BAD:
They say they have shuttle service available. Yet there is so many restrictions. We asked if we could have 1 member picked up from the airport. They said no because they don’t offer shuttle service during the week unless it’s pre scheduled. Asked on Saturday if they could drop off someone at the airport for Sunday. Again said no and THIS TIME SAID THAT THEY DON’T OFFER SHUTTLE SERVICE ON THE WEEKEEND!!! very irritating that their shuttle runs on a non consistent basis. Shouldn’t have it on all the hotel booking sites and their own site that they have a shuttle ! Also on Friday and Saturday night the parking lot was PACKED. Definitely not enough parking for all 3 Marriotts in one lot. Also elevators were very slow.

Great rooms! The rooms have modern décor and are super clean. I docked a start because I saw that someone got their car broken into on the day of my check out.

I’m giving this review 5 stars for the friendliness of the staff. I’m Platinum going on three years with Marriott and log a good amount of nights per year. This is the only hotel were the staff will still remember you by name from your previous stay. Moe at the front desk is the man. Always friendly, great customer service, and a true asset to this hotel. Cory the bartender is awesome, I literally buy a few drinks just so I can leave her a tip. I won’t stay any place else when I’m in the Sacramento are. Rooms are your typical CY, but this place does seem to be a bit quieter than most.

The hotel staff at the front desk was very friendly. But the room had ants all over. When i woke up ants were crawling on the walls and ended up on my luggage!

I typically love the marriot hotels. They’re usually very well organized.
Ok, call me crazy, but shouldnt you have enough parking for the number of rooms a hotel has?
I happened to go on a weekend where there were like 200 kids aged 6 – 12. I can do kids, maybe like 1 or 2 at a time if they’re quiet, but 200 kids for like the whole time? It was a girls hockey tournament or something of the sort. I came back at about 11pm and there was no place to park. I called the front desk and asked what they wanted me to do. I was told I could park in the parking lot across the street that belonged to a hospital. I went to check it out, there was no other cars there, so I didn’t do that. I drove around for 5 – 10 minutes until someone left.
My key had to be re-​magnetized like 2 – 3 times. That was a bit inconvenient. I had to walk all the way to the front to get into the building when i’d park by the back door, close to my room.
Why, oh why, do these places put the toilet paper holders almost behind the toilet?! I swear, I felt like I had to do yoga everytime I had to wipe. Like, try it. Its to the left and back. So awkward.
The pool is directly adjacent to the fitness room. It was not fun to have the fitness room swarm with unattended kids who were climbing the cardio machines like spider monkeys. Not tryna be rude or anything, but there was like 2 kids on one machine just hanging off parts– i wish there was a bit more attention to that sort of things.
Granted the mother of the kids was standing by the door watching them, but I mean, what are you doing, watching them wreck things? Or, what, monitoring in case something happens?! Get your 7-​year-​old off the machine and out of the way.
Everything in the room was pretty awesome, except the toilet paper holder.
Toilet yoga, bad parking, magnetizing issues. Ugh!

Things I liked — nice bed, very sleepable. Basic room accouternents and organization very comfy and workable. Decent pricing. Good location. Food was decent. Staff was excellent.
Biggest problem was noise. When i stayed lots of kids were there and they were running in the halls shrieking. Luckily they have earplugs in the room plus I put on white noise on my computer. With the white noise it was a workable room and I would go back, as long as I had my comptuer with me!

Stayed at this Courtyard again for two weekend nights. Still impressed. The service was friendly and helpful as usual (thanks again Araceli and Olivia). I really like the in-​room accommodations, and if I had to provide some critical feedback, it would be to improve the in-​room coffee (I would say that in-​room coffee is generally bad at most hotels, though). Also, there is a lot of chlorine in the hotel pool (again though, I’m sure there is a certain level of chlorine hotels are required to add to their pools).
The Courtyard café area is definitely a positive for guests/​travelers, as well.

Called the hotel to see if they have a hot tub. The answer on the phone was NO, we have a pool that closes at nine.
Upon arrival at 10pm we are told that they, in fact, DO have a hot tub and we are welcome to go in it as long as we would like. (very nice of them)
We choose not to and to go to bed only to be awaken at 8:15AM by the pounding of housekeeping banging on our door. Who wakes people up to clean a room at 8:15AM? Needless to say, after I opened the door half asleep, she got the hint.
I went back to bed and what do you know? at 8:55 she is back! Look, I don’t get to sleep in often so when I get the chance to sleep till 9AM, I am gonna take it.
The rooms were fine…

3 ½ stars — pre booked my hotel stay here which happen to be at a crazy rate of $ 159.00 a night during the week. The hotel is only a category 3 so there must have been a convention in town for the higher rate.
The layout of the hotel is really unusual and located next to the Fairfield Inn and Townplace suites. Parking seemed to be inadequate for the number of rooms build but the lobby & café had a face recently. They also had a separate bar area to socialize in the evening. My room was typical for a Courtyard by Marriott — clean, functionable and the bed was comfy.
Not the best hotel I’ve stayed at and definitely on the pricy side for what was supplied for a good night sleep.

My husband was a fan of Courtyard by Marriott (it’s not the most luxurious room but not the cheapest), it’s just right for 1 – 2 night stay out of town kinda hotel. He mainly likes it because of the 500 thread Egyptian sheet and comforter, and the hotel chain is pretty consistent.
We stayed at this location last night, we were greeted at the renovated restaurant area using a cashier station as a check in desk. The location of the room is quite confusing but after few walks around the facility it was ok. Our room was located near the elevator which was convenient; however, the walls was not well insulated-​through out the night you could hear the elevator as it moves up and down.
The room looked the same as any Marriott hotel but the bed had worn out springs that gave us a backache when we woke up in the morning.
Don’t think we’ll be coming back here again; I would rather stay at the Double Tree next time.
