Very disappointed in the office staff. Love the doc, he is nice, gentle, understanding, and professional. Like his assistant too! I would get no show bills for calling and cancelling or needing to reschedule and for some odd reason they were not getting my messages. Wow, when I have proof on my phone times and dates. I don’t have to pay for them because she said she will take it off but still I just think something is wrong with your phone system if you did not get 3 phone calls and left mesaages. My mother who I referred to as well has had similar issues too. I have bad luck with dentists now looking again. I would go back because I like Dr Mathews but would feel uncomfortable now with all the drama and this has happened twice what’s to say it’s not gonna happen again.

I’ve been going to Dr. Mathews for years, and have been very happy with the practice. The teeth cleaner (s) are good. The front office gal, Michelle, is always pleasant. The dentist is thorough and professional. Yes, this is Midtown, but the parking is free. What more could you ask for?

In town on business and needed some work done on short notice and was referred to Dr. Mathews. In my experience it is rare to have the Doctor so operationally connected to the care and patient experience. My insurance coverage was researched and explained in plain English by a friendly staff. With that, there were no surprises and this contributed to great experience. This seems to be a family operation serving the community. In an environment of «big-​business», it was nice to settle into a «small-​business» dental chair where the Doctor’s name in on the door!

LOVED THEM. I have always lots of anxiety and fear with my outlook on dentists and had actually not been to a dentist in over five years due to some issues with my tonsils. I was really embarrassed about having put it off for so long and was dreading my appointment with a new doctor. But Dr. Matthews was so genuine! I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Between the first hygienist, Lisa, who was amazing and put me at ease. And then my actual cleaning with hygienist (I believe her name was Michelle), I left there with a HUGE smile on my face. They were so caring and made the appointment enjoyable and I am now looking forward to my next appointment! Thank you Dr. Matthews and staff for saving me from my fear of the dentist! :D

I have been coming to this office for 15 years, my experience with Dr. Mathews is second to none. The consistency and gentle workmanship is the reason I am a returning patient. The staff and hygienists are helpful and knowledgable. I couldn’t recommend a better dentist in the Sacramento county. A++!

Dr. Mathews & his staff are great. They are all very kind and caring. The front office is always very accommodating. I highly recommend Dr. Mathews if you have a fear of dental work because he is so gentle!

A good dentist is very important to me. I love going to the dentist and I want to keep it that way. I was referred to Dr Mathews when I first moved to Sacramento and have not been disappointed. Not only is he great with the choppers, he is just a really nice guy. And the office staff is very friendly, too.

This is an update to my original review from 2011. I have changed the 1-​star status to 3-​stars as a result of a full refund from Dr. Matthews.
On 12÷4÷2013 I received a call from Dr. Matthew’s office asking to make amends for the purported misunderstanding and offering me my money back three years later. I was informed by the gal calling that the Dr. was very ‘bothered’ by my review. I was further advised how the office insurance billing procedures had changed for the better, and again everything was all a misunderstanding and they hoped giving me my money back would clear it up, because it had been three years after all…
While, I was unaware there was a statute of limitation for getting stiffed, I really do appreciate the effort to square up money I should have never have paid in the first place. On my end I tried to convey how it was a real hardship at the time, but the point was moot. However, she took my address and exactly one day later a check arrived with an additional bonus gift card for some cupcakes (perhaps to make me a little sweeter eh?)
So, I’m updating the review below to include this interaction. I never agreed to remove my original review in exchange for re-​payment. I said «Yes, I would feel better if you paid me back.» However in an act of good faith I will amend the details per the clarifying conversation we had and leave it at that.
I will also add this (and not because of the cupcakes) I’ve come across a few coworkers who use Dr. Matthews and adore him. So, this is just my review, an opinion-​take it or leave it.

#1-​I had unnecessary Insurance issues (Delta wouldn’t cover) — basically told from front office staff that my Delta insurance was accepted, only to find out they had just changed from in-​network, to out-​of network, so I was charged 100% out of pocket for all services that would have been otherwise 100% covered by an in-​network dentist. **Now, on 12÷4÷2013 I was told that the insurance handling issues have been resolved and what happened to me was a mistake.
#2**deleted**Dr. Mathews had some replacement suggestions about old fillings, which as verified by another DDS are fine. **Now, on 12÷4÷2013 I was told that I misheard/​misunderstood that statement. I really tried to wordsmith/​frame this discussion simply and will just leave it with this: As of a dental visit and x-​rays on 12/​10/​2013 (and writing this today 12/​11/​2013) my good ol’dark fillings are still fine.

I’ve been going here for over 5 years now and I really like the staff. From the front desk reception to the hygienists to Dr Matthews they are all great. I tend to get nervous at the dentist but not here. I would recommend this office to anyone looking for a great dentist in Sacramento.
