SFBFS – Run To Feed The Hungry Event

Giving back to our community for a great cause. This is our 3^rd year participating in this event with a group of our family and friends. Fabulous staff and volunteers who make it possible for this successful event.

What a fantastic experience for this special fun run/​walk event called, «Run to Feed the Hungry.» Since 1994, this organization event becomes a Thanksgiving tradition as of today where many Sacramento residents near or far will participate and gathered for this incredible cause to support Oak Park’s Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. So far, this is my 3^rd year that I participated for this event since 2013, and I just can’t enough for this excitement!
This run/​walk event starts with the 10k runners first which they run across the East Sacramento neighborhood and portions of Midtown. The 5k runners came next which I usually do this for a while. This is a great 5k track which it runs across the East Sacramento neighborhood (i.e. J & H Streets, 45^th Street, 41^st Street and Folsom Blvd.) The 5k track length is very good! I can see some amazing atmosphere of the neighbors of East Sac from CSUS, the Fab 40s, and the East Sac 50s cheering it on to keep the participant runners and walkers going. It’s like I’m channeling Rocky Balbola from the movie «Rocky» to do a morning jog all the time! It’s challenging, but I did conquered it successfully, and I’m very proud for this feat!
After the race ends while crossing the finish line, there’s an after party special where many sponsor tents held up like Western Health Advantage, Sacramento Republic FC, California Family Fitness etc. Additionally, there’s a free food giveaway from the food bank where many volunteers were giving away free water bottles, bananas, apple, and Cliff bars for runners and walkers to have a post workout fuel. What a great giveaway!
Parking at this event can be challenging. If you want to go for next year, try to park at the neighborhood side between 55^th and 58^th Streets because it’s easy to get out. Additionally, you can also park at Sacramento State parking too although there’s some restrictions here, so check the parking map accordingly to make sure you parked the right spot. Otherwise, you can ride a bike, walk, or use public transportation easier without the hassles.
In the end, Sacramento Food Bank & Family Service’s Run to Feed the Hungry is defiantly the best, and the most incredible run/​walk event that I’ve ever participated every Thanksgiving morning! Perfect for family and friends to burn off your pre-​Thanksgiving feast whether if it’s individual or a team! Highly recommend! My rating: 5 solid stars!

This is my second year. My husband has been walking it since 2008. Great way to help the community and get in some exercise before turkey dinner. All the volunteers and businesses do a great job organizing and helping out. Get your run or walk on!

This is quite an epic event for the city of Sacramento. Its know to be the largest Turkey Run in the country, and it generates 20% of the Sacramento food bank’s yearly operating budget. I try to participate in community service at least once a year and on a recommendation from my friend Van, I decided to enroll as a regular volunteer with the Sacramento food bank. I drove to the food bank and signed up for work at the Feed the Hungry run in East Sac. This event was amazing in that I never imagined the community rallying together as I saw today. There were several small business who opened their doors (on the holiday) for this event. I observed coffee houses, bars and restaurants on J street who graciously set up tables with self serve watering stations for the Turkey Trot (5 or 10 K run) participants.
As a volunteer I had to stand on a quiet little corner next to a barricade, which blocked traffic from driving on the course. The corner, however, was not quite for long as within 10 minutes after I arrived at my post I saw a large crowd of people wearing red tee shirts cresting the horizon of J street. It was like a wave of red… and it was so exciting to watch. I cheered them on as they swooshed by.
I saw participants dressed in tutu’s and others pushing baby carriages. Some people dressed up their dogs in red tee shirts so they also showed support for the cause.
After the waves of people trotted by I put on my blue latex gloves and slowly and methodically picked up up every piece of trash I could find. When my extra large hefty bag was full my job was done.
All in all this was a great way for me to get out of the house and work as a volunteer at this epic event. Perhaps you will join me next year. :)
