UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center

It has taken me five years to write this because I am, by own admission, quite bitter about the care my husband received. After a first, successful stem cell transplant in 2007 — a second transplant was recommended. His doctor, however, did not feel it necessary to be in the country while this was happening. My husband was seen by a parade of doctors, many of whom failed to observe the sterile conditions. We had to insist that they wash their hands and put on a gown and gloves. My husband came home with MRSA, resulting in 4 more hospitalizations after he came back home. He also developed a very agressive lymphoma 3 months after the transplant. The procedure that was to give us five more years of life gave us six months of hell before he died.
This hospital does do some great work, but the care was lacking during the second transplant and the failure of his doctor to adequately supervise the procedure contributed to his post transplant infections and –IN MY PERSONAL OPINION — his death.
I am sure UC Davis will ask for this to be removed, but I needed to say it..

Efficient, compassionate personnel from the registration clerks, nurses, support staff and doctors. Parking lots are strategically located near buildings in which one has appointments and is $ 2.00 with validation from the registration desk when you check in for your visit. Handicapped parking is abundant and free.

I started treating here 2 years ago when i was diagnosed with breast cancer. The staff is great. Love all my doctors, especially Dr Bold and Dr Aurora!

Excellent Staff and team that my son is under. They did not hesitate after transferring from another hospital, looking at his case and schedule his surgery the following week! due to a large cancer mass they were able to remove the affective area. Very happy with UCD Cancer Center and the surgical team of doctors.
Cancer Center also has labs and pharmacy in the same building.

Fantastic staff. Excellent business model for processing patients and guests. If you’re needing cancer surgery in the north state, seriously consider this hospital. The care, service and bedside manner have all been top-​notch from the moment we met the first staff member.
Admission, registration, surgery prep, conversations with the surgeon, questions for the anesthesiologist — you name it… Seamless, painless, professional, and efficient.
The nurses also appear to love what they do and don’t seem to be the usual frazzled, harried, stress-​laden people I’ve seen in other hospitals.
I’m very impressed with the entire experience and grateful for the care they’ve provided to my dad.

The UC Davis cancer center has issues. I don’t doubt that there are some great stories, however, there are a lot of stories not so great. Interesting that my review that simply describes my interaction with the UC Davis health system was «non-​recommended» and doesn’t show when you search Unilocal.You have to click on «read non-​recommended» reviews to find out what businesses don’t want you to know, or are trying to hide. UC Davis would like to hide a lot of the complaints that come their way. I will continue to tell others about my experience, as well as warn them to find their care at a better facility.

Nobody wants to find out they have cancer. Having an unsupportive boyfriend, I’ve had to go to my appointments alone. Scared, lonely, confused. I am lucky to have a small group of supportive friends who have tried to come with me when they can.
The staff here have treated me very well. They are very competent, and above all, caring. Willing to answer the «stupid» questions I’m too scared to ask. Letting me cry if I need to cry.
I know I can fight this, and I couldn’t have done it without the team here.

I have a relative who had breast cancer and could not stop praising the surgeons, oncologists and staff at this hospital. Her breast cancer was removed and she was reconstructed and is happier with her body now then she was before the surgery.
UC Davis Medical Center is one of the best places in Northern California to get help if you have any type of cancer. UCDMC is ranked among best hospitals in 2013 – 14 US News and world report. This is specially a great place for breast cancer, where they boast top oncologic surgeons, oncologists, and plastic surgeons — where mastectomy and immediate reconstruction with implant or DIEP flaps are routinely performed. They even have a place for relatives to stay at a deep discount if they are coming from long distance and have financial difficulties. Great hospital!

I went to UC Davis in July 2012 with breast cancer, The facility and staff were fine. I had Dr Yang as my surgeon and liked his manner. He is thoughtful and covered the procedures so I understood and felt save and informed. My experience went terribly wrong at the time of double mastectomy.
I was infected with pseudomonas during first surgery. It was common knowledge to the doctors and staff. This is when MY experience turned so wrong. I stayed in the hospital the standard amount of time and left the hospital with the infection in full force. I returned about 3 days later for follow up and was admitted immediately for another surgery because of the infection. I wasn’t made aware of the seriousness of the infection till I left UC Davis. I was going through the process thinking that «professionals» were taking care of me. I had SIX surgeries within a couple of months Pseudomonas is a hospital based bacteria which is deadly. At no time did any doctor suggest the need to call in infectious disease specialists.Dr. Thomas Stevenson Chief of Plastic Surgery treated me along with other two Plastic Surgeons. His manner was fine but the lack of concern and the methods of dealing with the infection they gave me was despicable. After the many surgeries and still infected my family and I went to see Dr Thomas Stevenson and he was asked if he had to handle my care again what would he do? He said he wouldn’t do anything different. I asked for a release and left town and began dealing with getting well. This meant going on a wound vac for months. I had to have surgery twice a week for 9 weeks and using a IV treatment 24 hours a day for months.
Nearly a year later I’m getting back to my new normal, UC Davis harmed me !!! I can’t do anything about it because the California malpractice laws have a cap of 250,000.00. Three lawyers I spoke to said it’s not worth their time because of this cap, not because of the damages done to me.

I highly recommend Dr. Yang. He is smart, kind, and makes time to listen to his patients. Just because he is a smart and talented surgeon, he doesn’t let his ego interfer with his job.

While I am a person living with cancer, I have not been treated at UC Davis. From what I hear, this place rocks.
I visit the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center as a volunteer in the cancer community. This place is super classy. Great staff and teaching facilities.
Some areas of the campus have free WiFi.

The Big C is a scary experience! Those who are unfortunate to have the cancer diagnosis but who are fortunate to be treated at UC Davis’ Cancer Center are receiving care from one of the best treatment centers in the nation. They work to save lives and do everything to put the patient first. They provide comprehensive information, caring doctors and staff, aggressive treatment with compassion and collaboration with patient and family. If you need an oncology surgeon, see Dr. Anthony Yang. UCD and Sacramento is fortunate to have such a knowledgeable, thorough, compassionate and skilled surgeon. We were fortunate to have him successfully remove our daughter’s cancer. We are very thankful for Dr. Yang, his surgery team and the UCD Medical Center.

I was so thankful to be walking out with good news, I forgot to take a business pic for the Cancer Center. It’s the least they deserve. A visit to the clinic will definitely remind you that no matter how bad life gets, there might just be somebody who’s got it worse. Not to say that the patients or staff were downtrodden. Remarkably, quite the opposite.
When I showed up late after mistakenly going to the hospital across the street, I was still greeted with a warm smile and sincere, «How are you?» The patients in the waiting room mostly had smiles or were holding tight to a friend as they watched the large screen TV. A lot of them had scarves around their head as they presumably went through the hell on earth known as chemo/​radiation therapy.
The doctor I saw had a reassuring confidence and a comfortable, relaxed demeanor that was not at all pretentious or condescending. He was a breath of fresh air in the parade of doctors I’ve seen over the last year. In explaining the reasons why he believed my issues were not cancer-​related, his level of experience and in-​depth knowledge of all the subtleties of my condition was very apparent. Once you’ve seen a few specialists, you get the sense that most of them tend to be cautious when doling out advice in other areas of medicine. Suppose that’s understandable with the number of malpractice suits and the price of liability insurance. I later looked at the business card he offered me as he graciously shook my hand. Professor and Chief. It somehow made it even more impressive that his demeanor was so comforting.
I was also impressed by a program UC Davis offers called E-​Chart. You can check your test results, reschedule appointments, etc. all on-​line. What a convenient and efficient idea. Even after overhauling their system, I still have to practically hand-​write a letter and send it via snail mail to get a test result from Mercy. I kid, of course, but you’d think they could at least set up the appointment deal.
Ah yes, and word to the wise, after hauling ass across the hospital parking lot, I discovered they offer $ 2 valet parking (which is what it will cost you to self-​park at the hospital) right out front of the entryway to the Cancer Center.
Wishful thinking I’m sure, but couldn’t we at least call it the «Wellness Center» or how about «Oncology Outlet»? :) Don’t know about you, but I hate having to say the C-​word.
