Celebrating our 30th Anniversary!

Since 1999, Maryann Calendrille and Kathryn Szoka have continued Canios tradition of hosting a wide range of authors, and featuring exceptional local artwork. Established in 1980 by Canio Pavone, the bookshop features new, used and collectible books and is well known as a literary gathering place.

An entire wall devoted to POETRY comprises one of the largest collections on Long Island. Specialties include literary fiction and non-​fiction, art, and photography. Shelves are bursting with a fine selection of childrens books, nature titles, food books, spirituality, literary biography and memoir, and environmental interest.

Events on Saturdays at 6 p.m. The art gallery features changing exhibits and receptions in summer.

Photography and Writing workshops in fiction, essay, memoir, and poetry.

Kathryn and Maryann S.

Business Owner

Maryann Calendrille is a writer and writing teacher, with classes at the book shop. Kathryn Szoka is a photographer who documents the flux and flow of communities in transition. Her Vanishing Landscape © series of photographs are in the shop’s gallery. Szoka also teaches photography workshops. Calendrille and Szoka have published Sag Harbor Is: A Literary Celebration.

superb!!!
…unless, you’re a hipster.
from the moment you open the screeky screen door, and hear the classical music, and see Canio, himself, dressed, well suited, bow tie and all, properly greeting you from his oversized desk, nestled beneath local artists’ note cards and take-​aways of upcoming events… your sensory perception is eroused.
meandering is intimate.
the slections are like fine wines, fermenting, until you birth them.
their authors have left something of themselves among their peers, here.
…and if you don’t read, you’ll fool yourself into pretending that you do, and wish to revisit quite often.

Wonderful local bookstore with small town charm. Caralyn (sp?) was incredibly helpful. They did not have the book I was looking for, but she offered to order it and have it delivered in two-​days. She also recommended several other books that were right up my alley in terms of taste — it was like she knew what I had been reading for years. The bookstore has a great selection of new and used books — perfect for vacationers and locals looking for beach reads. The store also has a number of events that can be found on their website. As I left, I was handed a map of historical homes in the area; a walking tour which could be started at Canio’s. Though the store is a little farther up Main street, away from many other shops, it is very near the Whaling Museum and the Customs House — two other Sag Harbor attractions.

Had heard about Canio’s for many years but never
made it out here until a couple of years ago.
They’re kind of a cute little shop and I’m sure
the readings and events they have there are
well worth attending, but I’m mainly a serious rare,
signed, and ltd. edition collector and scholar
on Horror, SF, Fantasy fiction and nonfiction
and other areas too, and basically I found
ZERO here in my areas of interest and nothing
I couldn’t have obtained cheaper online or
in NYC at The Strand (that’s putting it mildly), let’s say.
Was decidedly not worth a special trip. There was one other
tiny bookstore in Sag Harbor closer to the water
but its prices on art books etc., which is what it
seemed to specialize in, were pretty over the top.
The Hamptons are cool but I wouldn’t schlep out here
for bookhunting that’s for sure. If you’re looking to meet
a rich heiress, bored trustfund chickies or get a good meal
and get drunk and hit the beach in the summer,
than it might be worth the schlep. Books, nah.

Cute book store just south of Sag Habor. The owner is friendly and helpful Has an eclectic selection of old, new and very old enjoyable books. Early Huck Finn. The early years promo book for Guild Hall, a bio on Walt Whitman (though no Walt Whitman), and some new fiction etc. Interesting quaint place to go.
