Gilbert’s Hardware

They go out of their way to please me and make sure I can get what I want or need. Their paint department is excellent and Steve is a great help when anyone needs paint and advice.

BEST hardware store ever! I love Gilberts hardware! There is always someone to help you when you walk in the door and they always have everything in stock!

Wouldnt return a drill accessory that stripped within the first 5 minutes of use, Citing it wasn’t chucked right because it stripped up the bolt. Consider that you just lost my future business over 5 dollars.

The only good thing about this place is that they are close to my house. But now that Ace Hardware is open I’ll go there. Most reviews are saying how the staff is helpful. That was not my experience at all. I knew exactly what I wanted and exactly what I was doing when I went in. I didn’t need help, but it was offered to me. I politely declined at first, because I knew what I wanted.
But then I figured, maybe I will see what he says anyway. So I tell him what I’m trying to do and this rotund, disgusting, unkempt, slob of a man basically says that he can’t help me. He walked away and muttered an almost unintelligible insult, «You must doin’ sumthin’ wrong.»
And that was it. I still bought what I wanted, but I will never go back there. I’d rather go to place where I’m not treated like I an involved with ISIS.

I like this place and live down the street and have been shopping there for 6 years. They have a good selection and friendly staff. I’m holding back stars for 2 reasons.
First, you are not allowed to browse yourself and it makes me feel like they think I’m going to steal something. The staff is very knowledgeable but they hold your hand and if there are different choices for an item, they choose for you and quickly walk the items to the register. Two of my items today were found to be the wrong size when I got home– I would have liked to look through the other options while there. I also would have liked to go up and down the aisles without a sales guy breathing down my throat. I didn’t buy some other items I could have used because I felt rushed.
Second, they have a preferred contractor list and I am a licensed Michigan Residential Builder. Since I live down the street and have been shopping there for six years I inquired about getting on it but not expecting it to help business much. The owner Blair probably doesn’t realize he offended me but right off the bat he said «no, you have to be in business a lonnggg time, like 5 years. I explained this was my 15^th year (did I look like a bum or something?) and I have Angies List reviews if he wants to see them. «I AM Angies List and I don’t refer WEIRD businesses like yours anyway» He says. I’m a carpenter and specialize in garage construction and repairs. Carpenters and builders are on his list.
That just rubbed me the wrong way to treat me that way after I’ve been shopping there for six years paying higher prices to support his local business– How about giving back, Blair and support other local businesses. Could have at least taken a business card. Gilberts will now be for emergencies only. Ace is right down the street.

Gilbert’s is a great old fashioned hardware store. The friendly helpful staff made this non– intimidating for me, a single female. My go-​to place for home & yard!

Went in to get a sink part for mom’s sink. Was immediately approached and helped by a friendly salesperson. He found the piece immediately and we were at the cashier in less than two minutes. The cashier was very friendly and pleasant, too.
All in all a great store, very organized and very helpful staff.
You don’t get that at those big hardware chains, so give these guys a try!

I will no longer shop the large, chain hardware stores. Gilbert’s is the only place I’ll go from now on. Friendly employees, willing to help, knowledgeable and inexpensive. Thank you for making a project less daunting. It was my first visit, but will not be my last

On Harper in St. Clair Shores lies a mythical purveyor of house parts and accessories that’ll have you smiling, the objects you need in hand. Thank God there are still friendly, helpful stores like this to guide us through daunting projects and quick fixes alike.
No more will I wander through echoey, mile-​high aisles searching in vain for someone to answer a simple question. No more will I spot a vested person of said employ, only to have them see me trying to get their attention and do a roadrunner scram. No more finally finding someone to help, only to have them ignore me while clacking around on the computer, then not know a damn thing about what they sell anyway. And no more having my receipt shoved at me while the cashier turns the other way, no thank you or nuthin’ when I was perfectly nice.
Gilbert’s has not only things you need, but they have PEOPLE-​wonderful ones. People that talk to you, laugh with you, and will either impart the knowledge you need or find someone who will. You will clutch your chest in shock and disbelief like Fred Sanford callin’ to Elizabeth when they actually approach to see if you need assistance!!! The prices are fantastic, they offer services, and they spice things up with interesting product displays.
Yes Virginia, you don’t have to take it anymore.
