A Cut Above the Rest

I rarely actually post a review, but this place was just unprofessional enough to force my hand. Barber continued to shorten my hair even after I let him know that he was taking off too much. I asked to speak to the manager after because I was extremely dissatisfied, only to find out that the barber was in fact the manager and wasn’t willing to work with me to fix the situation. Find another spot.

Arrived and there was no waiting. got a hair cut and it was quick, the stylist did a horrible job. Left patches and was not friendly in anyway shape or form. Will never go there again.

No haircut should take 5 min or less.

This barbershop is AWFUL, anyone should avoid it at all cost. I ask a Number 2 on the side and about three quarter of inch on the top. The barber literally run the clipper through my head three times and told me it was finished. The whole process took less than 5 minutes. Overall poor communication and service. The worst 15 dollar I have ever spent in my entire life!

My Asian friend got his haircut here by Laura Sumner and it was one of the worst haircuts he’s ever had. Maybe the lady didn’t know how to cut Asian hair – apparently she tried to style it like a 50s style greaser (think James Dean) which was completely bizarre. The final touch was to randomly hack at great chunks of hair (to blend the cut?) but it just made Jia haircut look really sloppy and uneven. You can tell from his bangs now (a couple weeks after the cut) which vary in length by an inch!
I got my hair cut here around Aug 2009 and it was underwhelming. An older man cut my hair; I don’t know what his name was but he was nice enough. But I asked for a simple layering of my mid-​length wavy hair and he tried his best. It was really simple and I think a friend probably could’ve given me the same cut in his/​her own home. I guess you can’t expect much more for a $ 15 haircut!

God awful.
The person will sit you down, go ahead with clippers in about two minutes, cut your hair here and there, then charge you $ 15 for a mullet because they don’t know how to cut hair evenly.
Avoid at all costs.

I had a similar experience described in others reviews… The barber cut my hair very quickly, and did a below the average work. It’s not terrible, but I don’t recommend…

I totally love this place. Moira has been cutting my hair for around 7 years and I have absolutely no complaints. I’m a grad student, so I’m not in St. Louis very often, but I will wait until breaks so I can get my hair cut/​colored. She knows me so well I’d never dare let another person cut my hair :) It’s never difficult to get an appointment either, I can usually call the week before and have several options. The prices are also great. I get a cut, color and highlight, wash and blow dry for $ 85 – 90, something that can cost upwards of $ 200 – 250 in other major cities (my sister pays $ 400 for the exact same thing in New York).

I came here with high hopes of finding somebody that knew how to cut Asian hair, and I think this place could be good if you just wanted a fade. I told him a couple inches off the top, inch and half off the sides, make it even.
My guy literally had no clue what to do. At one point straight up asking me, «Tell me what to do man.» Not comforting.
He cut my hair dry and ran the clippers half assed (I have long random hairs out the sides now), finished in under 15 minutes, including a few minutes where he disappeared without saying a word. Wow.
Hasty, sloppy and it looks like a shark took a bite out of my hair on the right side. Sweet.
A couple notes, it was only $ 17 for a cut, and he did say as I was leaving to go home «see if it works out or you can come back» which I guess was nice, but why couldn’t he just get it right the first time? Thank god for hair wax.

Rarely will you meet a men’s hair stylist who practices the profession with such a high level of knowledge and care for under $ 20. Doc is unmatched in his ability to execute and to explain cutting and styling difficult asian hair.
For only $ 15, students can enjoy what non-​students enjoy for $ 17. Doc also encourages the in-​between haircut visits to clean up sideburns and the neck for free, of course.

A was in a bind recently, and needed a quick haircut. A Cut Above the Rest is right across the street from where I live. I scurried across the street to get a haircut and was surprised to see a $ 15 deal for students. I guess they took my word that I was a student because they never asked to see a student ID. It’s $ 20 for a regular cut, which is about average for St. Louis.
My cut was alright. I still had to make some minor adjustments, but for the most part it looked ok. My hair is pretty straightforward though, so it’s not like I have layers that need to be cut. The guy cutting my hair (I believe was the owner) was really nice and seemed to appreciate the WashU business he was getting. He told me to invite my friends. I’ll put it this way: I wouldn’t stop anyone from going to get their haircut here, but I don’t think I’d grab pom-​poms to encourage it either.
