Next time I need a company to deal with my air conditioner, I’ll simply walk outside of ScottTrade after a Blues game and point to a random person. There is almost no chance that the job that person does will be worse than the job Affron-Mehlville has done(or not — keep reading) for me. In July 2009, I purchased a condo. Right before I closed, the air conditioning died, so I asked the seller to install a new one. They selected Affton-Mehlville for the job. The unit came with a five year warranty. In June 2013, the AC died. I called Affton-Mehlville and they said that they’d come out to take care of it under warranty. They came out and tried a slew of things to get the thing to work, before deciding that the compressor needed to be replaced. It was free to me. I told them to go right ahead. The guy told me that the compressor was a little bit too tall, but that he would come back with a new motor that would solve the problem. He replaced the compressor, but never came back with the new motor. I called multiple times and was told that it had been ordered, or that he would be out the next week, or that it was too cold to work on the AC, or any of a number of other excuses. Since it didn’t affect the way the AC works, it slipped out of my mind. In June 2014, I had my annual AC inspection — from a company that I have used for years and trust without a doubt — and was told that the motor was gouging a hole in the top of the compressor. He showed me the damage and it was clear. There wasn’t going to be a hole imminently, but it was very clear that the motor was damaging the compressor and would eventually bore a hole. I called Affton-Mehlville immediately, since my warranty was expiring, and the repairman/owner said that he had the part and would come out. A few days later, he came out to replace the motor with a shorter model. Turns out that the motor wasn’t actually any shorter. Instead, he simply jacked it up a bit, so that the grate on top was no longer flush with the top of the unit. I told him that was not an acceptable solution since kids play around the unit and it was very easy to stick fingers in. He agreed and said that he would come by with either a new motor or a grate to solve the problem. I told him that I preferred the new motor. He agreed and extended my warranty for another five years to apologize. So, it seems like he handled it professionally, except that he never came back. He stopped answering calls or returning them. Finally, in February 2015, I decided to start calling him three times a week, leaving nicer and nicer messages until he called me back. He called back about two weeks in, and said that he would come out on Wednesday, March 4 at 5:00. On Wednesday at 4:30, he called me to let me know that he was stuck at a job downtown and wouldn’t be able to make it. I was less than shocked. We rescheduled for Friday at 5. I was not optimistic. Instead of not appearing at all, he appeared 40 minutes early. He showed me the new motor, and told me that he had to make sure that the fan was set to go the same direction as the motor. We walked over and he looked at both, saying that we were in luck. It went the right direction. Twenty minutes later, he walked to his van and left. I was baffled. I walked over and the unit was missing the fan, motor, and grate. He left his power screw driver there, which I was planning to hang on to to make sure that he came back. He didn’t answer the phone when I called. He called me about twenty minutes later, saying that the motor went the wrong direction, so he had to go to the store to buy a new fan blade and he had to get there before it closed. I asked him what happened, since he checked the directions. He said that he looked at it upside down. A real professional, clearly. He was on his way back with the new fan blade. The new fan blade did not fit. He told me that the old one was a 17″ blade, while the new one was an 18″ blade. He said that he needed a 17″ blade. He told me that he had one at home, and that he would run home to get the right one and he would be back later that night. He did not come back. On Saturday, March 7 — today — he called me to tell me that he was on his way back to fix it. When he showed up, he had two blades: one that was 16″ and another that was 18″. Neither fit. He said that he needed a 17″ blade. He left the 16″ blade in the unit, and let me know that it wouldn’t make much of a difference except maybe on the hottest days, but that he would order the new part and come back this week to install it. So… –he installed a compressor that was too tall –he didn’t come back to fix the motor that would have solved the problem –he stopped answering and returning phone calls –one year later, he was unable to read the motor properly before trying to install it –he purchased the wrong sized fan — twice Never. Never. NEVER use this company.
