Music educator Dave Simon always felt that there was a conspicuous void in music education for young people. Children were often eager to learn an instrument but struggled with the self-discipline of practice. He was convinced that young people could be more engaged in music education if the focus was learning popular music in the setting of a rock band. In June of 2003 Dave Simon opened Dave Simon’s Rock School in the basement of a music store with 6 students. The school incorporated Simon’s background in classical and jazz education with rock music as the musical platform. Four months later the movie «School of Rock» was released and local media was quick to point out that there was an actual rock music school in St. Louis. The school was comprised of 15 students at the time but tripled in size after a stream of both print and television coverage.
