History

Established in 2011.

The Horseshoe Sandwich was created in Springfield, IL in the 1930s. The owner was born and raised in Springfield and migrated to Saint Louis in 2002. On a visit back home, it was established that the Horseshoe HAD to make its way down to Saint Louis. The Horseshoe consists of traditional American food in a unique format-​its an open-​faced sandwich. It was a unique concept for the Saint Louis area and has been received very well so far!

I was born and raised in Springfield, IL. Majored in Political Science at Saint Louis University-​graduated in 2006. I’m married with two lovely daughters and reside in central Saint Louis. My family is in the restaurant business back in Springfield, and I grew up loving to serve people good food and enjoying their company. I’m a social person with a postive outlook on everything, and I’ve hired a staff with the same mentality. I strive to serve good food at a great price with excellent customer service!

If this Restaurant had zero as a rating it would be just that. The server Mary was rude, abrasive, and very unfriendly. The manager did not diffuse the situation and continued to make an excuse for the server. Professionalism and customer service is what this Restaurant lacks. I give this place two thumbs down. Decent drinks and food and bad service.

Visited on a Tuesday eve… Happy Hour all day, what more can you ask for except $ 3 drinks. As a meal, I ordered the Philly Horseshoe. I had never had this type of dish before and it was pretty good. The philly meat was your typical shaved beef. The fries were shoestring and the cheese on top meshed well with the dish. It was pretty empty upstairs. most of the folks were downstairs on the Hookah. Now, I didn’t go downstairs, so can’t speak on the Hookah experience, but I hear it’s cool.

If it wasn’t for the fact that I found such a great parking spot the night would have been a complete wash. The staff was rude the hooka was shitty and expensive (as compared with the place Half a mile down the same street) and I wouldn’t know about the drink specials because you can’t drink downstairs. Overall worst experience of my life, and the kicker is we were the 3rd group there. It wasn’t busy at all yesterday (a Friday night).

Just got home from this hookah bar. I loved the basement atmosphere and the music was great not too loud. However, it was cold the entire time. There was definitely a draft. We were greeted by a yelling manager. He was not hospitable at all. He wouldn’t let us arrange furniture or do much of anything. It was overpriced for sure. I have been to over 4 different hookah bars in St. Louis and this by far was the worst. The little stools they give you are for 5 year olds. Never going back

We had another great experience at the Horseshoe House. Again, we did not eat, but we came for the half priced drinks all night long.
Our server was only 18… which is weird, and possibly illegal for her to serve alcohol, so she needed a little guidance when we ordered shots, cocktails, etc. But she was super sweet and attentive.
At one point we decided we weren’t feeling the music so the bartender plugged in one of our iPods and played our music (swear words and all) for the remainder of the evening. Good times!

Here’s a meal you will regret come tomorrow morning, but it is a fine idea after-​hours when your judgement is foggy. A horseshoe is a Springfield, IL delicacy. The palates in middle America are especially refined, so it’s understandable that not everyone can appreciate the brilliance of this dish. A heap of fries is placed on pieces of toast, smothered with meats, sauces, and melted cheese-​product on top. This is the kind of meal that you assume could not have been thought up without the involvement of mind-​altering substances. Nevertheless, the Buffalo Chicken one is THE BOMB, and though I scolded my husband for ordering it— I largely participated in consumption.
It’s a cool spot too, very close to the Pageant. They have Houkahs (which seamingly EVERY restaurant must have on Delmar these days), and the service is very friendly.

Horseshoe House, what a joke.
There really is no such thing as good service in this place, as we waited for thirty minutes to be waited on. 20 minutes in outdoor seating, and another 10 when we though we might get better service inside. Went to the bar for our first round of drinks. The bartender and waitress really couldn’t be bothered, they were busy talking to their friends at the bar.
The food wasn’t good. That’s all that can be said about that. It was a heaping plate of just, «meh».
The worst part about this place was when I couldn’t find the restroom (which is inconveniently located in the downstairs portion of the restaurant). I asked the bartender and she told me it was in the basement. When I asked here where the stairs were, I kid you not, SHE TURNED AROUND AND WALKED AWAY. One of the patrons at the bar had to tell me where the elevator was.
This place doesn’t even deserve one star, it deserves zero.
I will never ever come back to this place, and recommend that you don’t either.

I never thought I’d have such a mediocre time at a bar with drink specials this insane ($ 1 drafts, half off the bar, $ 5 pitchers at various times).
Went on a Thursday to take advantage of some $ 1 PBR drafts. Was surrounded by what seemed to be high-​schoolers – I don’t think a person in the bar was over the age of 19 besides me and my friend. Bartender was inattentive.
The place is beyond confused. Greasy sandwiches? Great. Cheap beer? Great. A gleaming, faux-​ultra-​modern-​hip bar? Bad. A focus on the basement hookah lounge that looks like it was designed by some kid trying to get in his girlfriend’s pants while his parents are out of town? Terrible. A clientele that is skipping curfew? Meh.
Can’t speak for other nights. Has looked like it might be fun at times.
It’s a shame.

Got here two hours after it opened and the mountains on my coors light weren’t blue = not cold. Come on that is a rookie basic. I’ll write up a review later that fully encompasses our entire experience.
So don’t expect to be able to have a cocktail, eat, and smoke hookah all in the same place. I wish I could upload a punnet square to show this… you can smoke downstairs… no booze down there though b/​c it’s 18 and up. Also no food b/​c of the smoke.
Upstairs you can drink and eat but no hookah.
Food was super collegy… if you like gaining weight and eating a lot of cheese this is your place.
The smoke/​food/​drink separation is pretty standard for hookah bars across the St. Louis area. If there was one that at least let you drink and smoke that would be better.

Wow! This place out did itself this time. I didn’t think it could do much more when the horseshoe was amazing and we got half priced drinks on V Day! But brad and I were out looking for apartments, so Matt can move in with us, and I decided to check on my happy hour app for any specials on this Saturday and just happen to stumble upon one for the first birthday celebration of Horseshoe House.
There was a dollar menu that was absolutely ridiculous. 20 oz PBRs. Yes. Ponyshoes. Regular hamburger this time since I had buffalo chicken last time. Both are awesome. Makeshift margarita (tequila was on the menu, asked for sweet and sour with it). Please. Onion rings, cheese fries, buffalo wings, Philly cheesesteak sliders, gooey butter cake horseshoe, brownie, more PBR. It was pretty amazing. We left pretty stuffed. Service was spotty but as was to be expected with the dollar menu, they could have used one more server. Please go, with an open mind and try a horseshoe now. The cheese sauce is amazing, don’t expect nacho cheese, it is much better! Will hopefully be back many times, at least with Jacki.

My overwhelming take on this place is that they are just straight up confused. The décor was ultra modern and fairly sparse, which doesn’t fit with the type of food they serve at all, and most of the tables were tiny high tops. Granted we went in kind of late, but they were blaring dance music, which got old pretty quick.
There’s a hookah lounge in the basement (where you can’t eat or drink apparently) and a constant stream of barely legal looking kids kept traipsing though where we were sitting to get down there. Our waitress kept disappearing and it took an unnecessary amount of time to get the check.
The food was good, but not great (I fancy myself a bit of a horseshoe connoisseur, being from Springfield and having consumed somewhere around 732 horseshoes in my 27 years). If I was rating the food alone, Horseshoe House would probably get 3 stars… ok but definitely not the best I’ve ever eaten (drive to Springfield and hit up D’Arcy’s for that). Mostly I think they just need to figure out what kind of place they want to be and stick with it, because whatever is going on in there right now was not working.

This is a really interesting take on getting a burger and fries. It’s basically a variety of «open faced» burgers, or sandwiches with texas toast, then meat and then fries with cheese sauce then topping it off. Didn’t want to see the calorie intake, but I’ll give it 4 stars for yumminess.
Oh, and they make their own homemade rootbeer. Awesomeness.

The décor doesn’t fit the food at all. A horseshoe is slinger like in it’s appearance and deliciousness, but the place is decorated like a lounge or bar/​nightclub. And it is confusing figuring out if it’s a restaurant or hookah lounge. But the horseshoe is definitely worth trying. Horseshoes were new to me, but proved a welcome newcomer to my bar food repertoire. They are an openfaced sandwich-​like calorie bomb, stacked with fries, and covered in an addictive cheese sauce. The people working there are friendly and enthusiastic. It is also pretty kid friendly which is wonderful. I think they might actually have the coolest highchair of any restaurant in STL. Try it out! Make sure you end your meal with the funnel cake fries.

I’m from Springfield, IL and know how to judge a horseshoe. The cheese sauce is what makes a horseshoe great, and I must say H2’s sauce is up there with the best in Springfield. I was very pleased with the overall presentation of my «shoe», the crispy fries, and the best root beer in town (sorry Fitz’s).

Driving down the Loop a couple weeks ago, trying not to hit the pedestrians who are oblivious to vehicles when they are about to enter the Pageant, I notice the word «Horseshoe» out of the corner of my eye. I immediately was giddy and started googling on the phone (red light of course :). Being originally from Springfield, IL (Go Rochester Rockets!), I found it my duty to taste test these personally.
I brought along some Horseshoe Virgin girlfriends tonight to introduce them and get a third party opinion…
Food: Close to amazing! Traditional Texas toast was thick. Fries were cooked perfect (not over or underdone), and cheese was the perfect consistency (choice of white or yellow). The only thing we would have liked was a little more cheese sauce on each o the shoes. We requested extra sides of cheese and were supplied with no charge.
I order the Turkey Burger Shoe. The quality of the turkey burger was great! Thick and juicy and didn’t taste like cardboard. Some of the other girls ordered Fried Chicken Finger Shoe and Philly Cheese steak Shoe, which they all enjoyed.
Desert: We split the Brownie Shoe. I never knew such a wonderful creature existed. The brownie was extra warm, topped with funnel cake «fries» and ice cream. Rumor has it their Gooey Butter Cake Shoe is even more incredible. It’s not listed on the menu yet, but I’m sure to request it next time.
Service: Was a little slow, however a couple other staff (possibly managers?) stopped by to chat and help out which was really nice.
I’m exited to go back for Boozday Tuesdays! ½ off drinks and $ 5 Horseshoes.

My husband and I went here for the first time last night for dinner.
To start, the décor is very nice. Very bright, clean and modern. The chairs at the bar were very comfy! I wants to take them home.
The staff was very fast and friendly. One of the owners chatted with us as well. She told us that there was going to be a hookah lounge downstairs soon. She even took us down to show us around. With the recent law that bans smoking in STL they have a lot of red tape to get thier permits to have hookahs inside though, but it looks like it will be really cool.
Now to the food. I had the buffalo chicken horseshoe with the white cheese sauce. (they give you the choice of white or yellow cheese sauce). It was really yummy. The fries were cooked perfectly and were nice and hot. the buffalo sauce on the chicken tenders was good too. Not too spicy. My husband had the philly cheese steak horseshoe and he loved it. He basically licked his plate clean!
The owner then brought out a gooey butter cake horseshoe on the house. I was very full and wasn’t even thinking about dessert but it looked so good! It was a piece of warm gooey butter cake with icecream on top. then it had chocolate and carmel on top of that! But wait, let me get to the best part… instead of potato fries, there were funnel cake fries. I don’t even want to know how many calories that was.
To sum it up: the price is great, atmosphere pretty cool and the food was really yummy. Be prepared for the calorie overload though!
