Kopperman’s Specialty Food & Delicatessen

Bad food and crazy up sell. «Would you like strawberries or mixed berries with your French toast?» $$ kaching. Almond milk, whole milk, or nonfat milk with your chai tea? $$ for the almond milk. «We have one NY bagel left if you’d like that «$$ kaching. «We can’t do hash browns crispy because it’s really just potatoes but we can sub a latke» $$ kaching. The bill came with about $ 10 worth of extra fees! Yes they took some off but really?! Left most of the food over anyhow. Instead the waiter should’ve noticed it was all still on the table and said «is everything okay?» Salty eggs, dried out latke, old tasting bagel. I don’t recommend. Also, emailed the contact information listed on the website and no reply.

I had the tongue fu and a latke. They were both good, but the tongue fu could of been more tongue heavy (it also has corned beef and brisket) I had horseradish on the side also. The restaurant is also doubles as a liquor/​wine/​beer store which I found kind of weird. Also, the bathroom is in the basement and you may get a little silence of the lambs vibe going down there.

Breakfast at Koppermans is a laid back experience. You never feel like they are rushing you out the door in order to seat another table sitting. And yes, it is fresh squeezed orange juice. You can watch them do it. They also had a Bloody Mary bar but I’m not sure if that is just for Sunday’s.
We both had a traditional breakfast. Two eggs over easy, bacon, hash browns and toast. Everything was cooked to order and made just right. The potatoes were good but not what I consider to be hash browns. More like breakfast potatoes.
Yes, I would definitely come back again.

Possibly one of the most underrated restaurants due to its modest looks and «on a side» location. The best feature of this restaurant, surprise, surprise is the food! Simply delicious. Fresh Squeezed Orange or Grapefruit Juice, cheese blintzes with sour cream and fresh preserves, Potato Pancakes just some of the highlights. Breakfast served all day.

Service is terrible. When the breakfast food finally arrived it was cold. Never received the coffee we ordered.

Kopperman’s is the «Real Deal Holyfield» when it comes to Delicatessen’s here in St. Louis.
Although I’m not a big deli fan, the offerings are plentiful, flavorful and well prepared.
I personally endorse the French Toast and fresh squeezed orange juice.
The location is great and the service is good. Sit out on the patio for people watching purposes.

Sometimes you just need a good sandwich with generous portions of meat. During those times, I’d suggest Kopperman’s.
(1) drinks: I’ve been sticking with water these days but the cooler is stocked with standard sodas, various brands of root beer, pellegrino (and other sparkling options), and a modest selection of beer and wine. Bottled wine is sold at retail plus a $ 5 corkage fee.
(2) hours: at least for summer/​fall 2015 they say they plan to be open from 6a until 9p on weekdays. Friday and Saturday night they’ll be open all night long. Sounds fantastic for a late night sandwich.
(3) happy hour: 4p-​8p $ 2 domestic bottles, $ 4 house wines, $ 5 mixed drinks, plus some food specials.
(4) service: no complaints. Been here three days in a row and generally friendly.
(5) atmosphere: about what I’d expect of an older deli. Not modern, but not falling apart.
(6) food: I’ve tried four of their sandwiches. I’ve enjoyed all four. The portions on the cold cuts are generous, and they seem to put some thought into the balance of flavor in their specialty sandwiches. Corned beef in particular was tasty. They serve two kinds of potato salad (mayo or mustard) and two kinds of cole slaw (creamy or vinegar). Here again my experiences have all been positive.
Overall, sounds like the restaurant is trying out some new hours and ideas, to which I say good on them. I’ll be coming back for lunch regularly.

I came here with my dad for brunch a few months back. I had the Lobster Benedict which was quite good. The restaurant has excellent service (my coffee cup was always filled). If you are looking to have an enjoyable breakfast with good food, this is the place for you.

Reuben was delicious. So was the pastrami. Cole slaw was standard, but decent. Service was friendly. It is 24 hours on the weekend. Will be back again at some point.

I lived in New York, and loved Carnegie deli. I don’t live in NY anymore and I have begun to eat gluten free. I was passing through St. Louis, and stopped at Kopperman’s for breakfast. I had a corned beef scramble, that I hear the corned beef is imported from Carnegie Deli. It was great, and a great option for gluten free diners. I even asked for a pickle on the side. Not quite your corned beef sandwich with pickle and fries, but close enough! I would definitely go back!

There aren’t many non-​franchise establishments open early in the morning, so when I see a sign that says, «Now open at 6 a.m.,» I’m happy that I get to try someplace.
I’m not a big fan of breakfast foods. It’s yogurt, oatmeal, or a bagel, but usually I’m burnt out on these items and I go with whatever leftovers or junk food I can find. When I got to Kopperman’s, I was the only customer, and my server told me that I was the first 6 a.m. customer even though they’d been open that early for over a week. The waitress checked on me often, and maybe a little too often.
It’s none too bright inside, but I dislike bright lights any time of day, so that was fine with me. The prices of my latte and oatmeal were what I was expecting, but the oatmeal was so typical that I won’t be ordering it there again. The soy latte was good, though.
Can’t say when I’ll be back to Kopperman’s. It’s not quite my style. I might check it out for a different meal or if one of my friends wants breakfast that early, which I doubt. But I’m glad I tried it.

This place is definitely dumpy. However, they make up for it with great food and outdoor seating. I’ve only ever had breakfast (eggs benedict, omelette, pancakes). Never been disappointed. I’ve gone with people who had a deli sandwich, and they are huge and apparently delicious. Maybe not a place to go if you’re trying to impress anyone, but for sure a place to go if you need some grease

Way over hyped. Not very good food and pretty bad service as well. Our waitress was wearing sweat pants. Not a very good experience.

Kopperman’s has a certain funky charm and I enjoyed my meal there.
First, they could really clean up the place a little and make it more attractive. The inside is a little grimy and seems unfinished, with random boxes and extras scattered all over the place, unfinished paint jobs on the wall. The thing is, I actually really liked that about it!
The service is friendly and casual. The menu is HUGE with so much to choose from — dozens of sandwiches, salads, and breakfast all day.
I ordered the lox and eggs and my date ordered the smoked pepper salmon on bagel.
My dish was very good, very salty, and came with well seasoned skillet potatoes. The pepper smoked salmon was good but actually, surprisingly, not that flavorful aside from the pepper.
I like the casual atmosphere of the place, I like what they offer on the menu.

One of a few breakfast places open on a holiday Monday, we thought we’d give it a go. Very disappointed. Sent the veggie omelet back after I discovered it was very undercooked. Sauté the veggies before putting them in the omelet please! Potatoes were really odd. Tons of pepper and mostly tasteless. The highlight was fairly decent wheat toast. Apparently under new ownership now, I’m hoping for a makeover, cleanup and new menu. Otherwise a non-​repeater.

I went to Kopperman’s once on a whim; «Lobster Benedict» written on their street signage caught our attention and we stopped asap. Definitely happy we did.
We had corned beef hash, french toast, the lobster benedict, and hash browns. I thought everything was great. I was surprised how great their french toast was — I was expecting overcooked and too crunchy, but it was done perfectly with just the right amount of crisp texture, soft center, and the right amount of cinnamon. Also, the lobster benedict blew me away. I wasn’t expecting much. I mean, Lobster in a morning dish at a mid-​priced restaurant? But it was fantastic.
The outdoor seating was pleasant and allowed for ample people-​watching. Service was good and I got the coffee refills I wanted. Basically a great brunch. I plan on re-​visiting to check out lunch and dinner options.

Such a funny, fun place! Who knew it was in StL? This is a weird, owner-​run one of a kind NYC-​style deli in the cwe where they serve breakfast all day.
On the plus side… great pastrami, corned beef hash, Reuben’s! Potato pancakes were so flavorful, especially with apple sauce. The hash browns were unexpectedly wonderful and warm and crisp in all the right places! Was that hot paprika in there? So so good. Service was attentive, helpful, funny and personal.
On the «opportunity list»:
–what’s up with all the crapola everywhere? Boxes, bottles, chachkis everywhere!
–we sat by the dishwasher’s station and the smell of cleaning products was INTENSE.

–the trip to the potty in the silence of the lambs basement is weird and scary. Ironically it is neat. Could I possibly recommend this as a spot for the crapola upstairs?
Still this weird wonderful place is worth a visit if you’ve never been.

I’m not sure even where to begin with this review. About 20 years ago I had amazing chopped liver and so I’ve been on a 20 year quest and I have finally found it! The chopped liver was absolutely perfect! My description would not do it justice so just try it.
He ordered his Koppermans usual; eggs Benedict. I’ve never been a huge fan but … Wow! Their eggs Benedict is great too! For my meal, I ordered a Reuben with potato salad. I had a choice of mustard potato salad or regular mayo potato salad with bacon. Bacon?! I wish I would’ve ordered that but the mustard potato salad was amazing too. My Reuben was soooo good! The corned beef was so tender and melted in mouth. I’m serious… melted in my mouth!!! I can’t wait to go back! I may have to sneak over there by myself if we can’t go soon!!!

This was a second visit for us at Kopperman’s. We went with KT in October and this time after a visit to the poinsettia display at the Botanical Gardens, we had lunch at Kopperman’s with Aunt Annie and Mrs T.
I see that there is quite a mixed range of reviews for Kopperman’s, maybe a wider range than typical. I can see both sides of it. It is a little quirky. It seems kind of random with some tables here, some there, a bar, some shelves with specialty groceries. It has not been busy the two times we have been there. The service was mixed. The first time, apparently they were short handed and service was slow. The second time it was very prompt, courteous, attentive and friendly.
I tend to look past what the place looks like if I like the food. I happen to like real, corned beef brisket and what Kopperman’s imports from Carnegie Deli is what I go for. They have a huge menu of other stuff that you would expect at a Deli and probably some things you would not. I don’t care, I go for the corned beef. You have several choices of sandwiches to try with corned beef (or pastrami). I like Martha’s Monster with creamy slaw and Russian Dressing. Order it hot. Ms T, Aunt Annie and Andrew T had the Reuben Rambler and loved it. It is really hard to choose which sandwich to order. I suppose the pastrami is just as good, I have to get back to try it.
I have had both the creamy and vinegar coleslaw. They are good, not fabulous, but you feel you are eating something home made. The vinegar based slaw is a sweet marinated style, maybe a little oily and a little too sweet. The creamy is better. It is mayo based and is not sweet. The potato salad was creamy but I found the potato chunks too large and a little under done. (Note: June 2013 visit, potatoes were done! I like the mayo style, mellow, not sweet or mustardy)
Ms T and I really liked our corned beef and pastrami sandwiches at Proetzels. I would not say one is better than the other. There is more seating at Kopperman’s, but both serve very good corned beef. I have got to try the Tongue Fu with tongue, pastrami and corned beef on pumpernickel. Wow!

It isn’t what it use to be. I remember when the food and service here was fantastic and breakfast was a treat. Today, the best thing we had was the Bloody Mary Bar and we made those ourselves. The pour of vodka was generous.
We started out with the Irish Salmon with bagel. The salmon was good, the bagel was tough and chewy, the tomato a typical out of season tomato and the red onion was rather woody.
I had the Hickory Smoked Ham & Pepper Cheese Omelet. The coloring and folding was close to picture perfect. When sliced into, is when it got disappointing. The inside was runny (the egg, not melted cheese) and the ham was ice cold. The side of hash browns were seasoned okay, but again they were cold. Either they don’t have a heat lamp, or they had the potatoes made way in advance.
My partner had the Eggs Madison, the portion of salmon was generous and the eggs were done well. The big disappointment was the hollandaise sauce. It was not made from scratch which you’d expect for the price they charged. It tasted and looked like Knoor’s powdered mix. Loving bacon, he also had a side as an extra treat. When they sat it down on table, I thought it looked like over processed beef jerky soaked in grease.
The service was poor at best, the young girl serving us was very scatter brained and gave off the vibe that she’d rather be somewhere else. The guys serving around our table were more attentive then she was.
Perhaps my expectations were too high, but when breakfast cost $ 55 I just want more bang for my buck.
The highlight of the breakfast was running into a friend who retired from Louis Vuitton.
