Sandwich and tomato soup were good. I wanted to like this place but I will not be back. An average meal that I would expect at any corner deli. After we ordered and were waiting for our food, a mouse ran across the shop and into some boxes next to our table. There were piles of leftover food scraps from previous diners throughout the shop, which I assume the mouse was going for. We subtly mentioned it to the staff, they didn’t seem to mind. They made a few jokes about rat poison in our food and went on about their business. A few minutes later one of them came over and kicked a box next to where we were eating and shouted«there he goes!» They laughed when we got startled. Next time I’ll skip the dirty deli and the bizarrely rude staff and go anywhere else for an average sandwich.

I have been here several times. I always get the Karl’s Special and Creamy Pasta Salad. Both are usually good. I think they switched bread companies because the current white loaf bread is very bad, and very generic. I can’t call if french bread and it doesn’t pass as italian bread either. I took off most of the bread as it was large and excessive compared to the guts. It’s not hard to make a good sandwich, and decent bread is a major component. Owners, don’t go cheap on the bread, it can make or break a sandwich. Furthermore, service here is slower than molasses. It took 5 minutes just for an employee to come out of the back room to acknowledge we were even there, all of them were in the back. Despite there only being 4 customers, and three employees it took 25 minutes from the moment I walked in, to the moment I walked out with my sandwich. I don’t see much reason to come back due to the terribly slow service, and the very bad bread. There are just too many good deli’s in the south city.

A favorite local deli in Saint Louis. Delicious sandwiches and soups(I’m hooked on their ham-n-bean soup and my wife loves their chicken and dumplings.). Impressive selection of craft beers too. Friendly staff.

Even as a vegetarian I love this place. I have them make me a veggie and cheese sandwich every time I come. Great beer selection and lots of other snacks. If you are headed to a friend’s house in south city it’s the perfect place to stop in for some chips and a 6 pack to bring. Lovely patio! I just wish they had more veggie sandwich options :).

On a Sunday afternoon, we missed Russell’s by 15 minutes so I leaned on my Unilocal app to guide me elsewhere. Elsewhere was Macklind Avenue Deli just down the street on the same block. The first thing we noticed was the large craft beer section(probably over half the space). I knew we found a great place. We were greeted by the friendly ladies working the deli counter and put in our sandwich orders so we could peruse the beer options while they made our lunch. Charlie handles the stocking of the beers and we talked to him for awhile. They have a mix and match 6 pack section which I always like. They also had a good range of high end beers(Chimay) and less lofty beers(O’Fallon) with an interesting assortment in between. Our food was delivered to the seating area which was surrounded by the beer and wine section. Good sandwiches that were very large. I had the chicken parmesan on ciabatta and he had the meatball. Both were very filling and on our way out we built a six pack to go.

Been here a few times before. Started craving their BLT Murdoch style last week. Decided to go get it tonight. Did not disappoint! It’s delicious. My all time favorite BLT.

Great place to get a quick lunch or dinner. My bratwurst was good. I challenge you to find a restaurant where you can find a better selection of cold soft drinks. The red velvet cake was stale so stay away from that. The prices are competitive. The staff gets an A++. They were so nice. They couldn’t have done a better job. It’s also a good place to buy booze.

I love you, MAD. Walking distance from my house, ALL the beer… yep, definitely a fan! I do wish there was a separate check-out area for people just getting something grab-and-go– having to wait in line behind people having sandwiches made is a bummer when my ice cream bar is melting /beer is warming up in my hand! But, it’s a small neighborhood place so I understand just not having the staffing /back-end availability for this. I like the atmosphere and enjoy coming here for a snack. Haven’t had a sandwich yet– I’ll have to do that next time!

Really near place. Amazing beer selection(crazy good for a little neighborhood joint). A very well stocked reasonably priced deli. Very good sandwiches. A little gem of a place. Their version of a BLT with peanut butter is counterintuitively great. Oh they have a huge selection of unique sodas. Soups are really good also.

I’m so glad we have this Deli. I really enjoy the veg sandwich with tomato garlic soup served with whatever delicious soda I want, and my favorite Billy Goat Chips. The beer selection is nuts. So many choices you could get something different every time you visit. Stop by, get it to go, or sit and stay.

It’s fine. The food is pretty ordinary and tastes okay. It’s one of those places that gets more props than it deserves simply because it’s been a neighborhood institution for so long. See also: moms deli and legrands.

I had the chance to go here with my sisters the other day. We were originally trying to go to Russels but they were closed. First off the beer selection is insane. If you are into the craft beer scene — you should go here just for selection. Great! We ordered a meatball sandwich, an Italian, and a BLT. All of the sandwiches were good. The BLT had some really overcooked bacon, like burnt. But other than that they were very good, nice mix of meat, cheese and condiments. We each ordered a cup of soup — chicken and wild rice, tomato bisque and chicken tortilla. The tomato bisque was not good. Runny, odd texture. The chicken and wild rice was very tasty and my sister loved the tortilla soup. No one was overly friendly. Though I was ok with that. It was very low key. Great for families with kids. I would come here again to get some great beer and a bag of sandwiches to go!

Macklind Avenue Deli is one of my favorite StL sandwich shops and so much more. Living near the Macklind Business District has it rewards and one of them is the easy access to this little gem. MAD has an extensive alcohol selection, homemade pastries, about a hundred local/craft sodas and Billy Goat chips, to boot. I’m a simple sandwich guy. Turkey, Provel, lettuce, mayo on wheat and these folks do it right. Match that with a big lemonade or a Fitz’s Root Beer and I’m a happy camper. The little patio out front is a great spot for some people watching while you enjoy your meal.

Great neighborhood deli with a vast wine and beer selection. Food is good as long as you aren’t in a hurry ~ service can be a bit slow at times but the staff is friendly is makes up for it. Try their house made desserts — huge portions for $ 3 or less make their sweets a value.

Excellent family owned business. It’s a deli with an extensive craft beer selection. I tried the poorboy and the meatball sandwich, huge portions for a reasonable price. We also got a Fruity Pebble rice krispie treat to share… holy crap… tastes like childhood. So good, in fact, we made our own version later in the week.

I recently had a chance to try the Macklind Avenue Deli and I have to admit that this is a great neighborhood deli, complete with a large beer & wine selection. I can see why this is so popular, if I lived near I would be a frequent customer, not only for the food but the selection of local beer is above and beyond the local Shop n Save. The location is easily walkable to the surrounding neighborhood, which is why I am sure its a hit with the locals. The food is high quality, they use only Boar’s Head which usually means higher prices however prices are fair and portion sizes are great. The staff was friendly and the service was fast, despite everything being made fresh. The meat was sliced once you ordered so every sandwich receives special attention. I ordered the Chicken Bacon Ranch, which was awesome. I believe that the ranch is homemade, not the typical bland ranch. I did see a Hawaiian Sandwich that had ham and pineapple that I will be trying on my next visit. I almost forgot to mention that you can also get Billy Goat Chips, which are by far the best!

Today I put the mack on the Macklind Avenue Deli. See, I was walkin’ down the street and I see Russel’s, lookin’ all fly, lookin’ all 5-star, lookin’ all scrumdiliumcious. Now, you know I don’t have expensive taste, and Russel’s just looked a little high maintenance, a little too much work, a little here, hold my purse while I try things on. But then I look over and see Russels’ frumpy fat friend, lookin’ all 5 out of 10, lookin’ all been-around-the-block, lookin’ all maybe-hidden-gem, maybe food poisoning. I left the Russel’s herd and head up to MAD. I’m like yo, what’s up. You look familiar. Do I know you? Damn, normally that line works. Even though it’s early, MAD invites me in. I’m beginning to think this one’s got a drinking problem, because MAD has so much alcohol that I probably look like a 10 in there. You know what else they had? Good fucking sandwiches. No, like GOOOOOOOd fucking sandwiches. Like they know how to make a sandwich the way your mom made me a sandwich last night. Instincts, you did not steer me wrong. Nothing fancy here, just solidly delicious. No backflips, no cartwheels, not an insecure little bitch trying to impress me. Confident, old school, no apologies. Friendly, down-to-earth, no pretension. The PERFECT neighborhood joint. This honey gonna be up in my speed dial.
