My mom tells me I came here as a baby, but I don’t remember. This is true of many places I am reviewing for the first time on Unilocal.Anyway… I came with my parents and grandparents to Macy’s back when it was Famous-​Barr. My mom came here as a child, and I believe her mom came when she was little too.
I shopped in July to check out the closing sales and kept wondering about all the people who must have shopped there before. I bought a men’s t-​shirt, misses’ jeans and a women’s pj top from the retail section. I also purchased a coat rack and some glasses from Papa Fabarre’s restaurant. The stuff I bought was pretty cheap.
I don’t live downtown and only make it that way once or twice a year, but I appreciated its history and I’m sorry to see that the store is closing. I hope they do something else cool with the building… something that will include window displays!

Well, in reading the reviews here, People say that they had no Idea there was a Macy’s in downtown St. Louis.
The sad thing is, now there will not be.
They are shutting their doors for ever, here in Downtown.
They clerks all said that people would always say, we did not know there was a Macy’s downtown here.
It is going out of business and will close it’s doors July 16^th.
Always sad when a grand store such as this shuts down.
Everything in the store is on Clearance, except the makeup. The best part is jewelery is 70% off and I am talking fine jewelry, fabulous!
Also on the top floor all the kitchen and household things are on clearance as well.
Not to mention all the manikins and display items.
I would so love them, but how would I get it on the plane.
You can use your Macy’s card as well and any other card and Cash, No checks.

I had no idea there was a Macy’s store downtown! I have lived here for over 2 years and I just found out about it recently! I think this is the best kept secret of downtown.
When I arrived I was really excited because the door I chose to enter in from was connected directly the women’s section of the store! I loved it. Without hesitation I began to browse the store and I found so many great items. They have the usual sections as any Macy’s store would have; however, this Macy’s was much more organized than the others. I even enjoyed the clearance section-​it was such a glorious experience!
The customer service was friendly and what I liked best (that others may not like) is that I was not bothered at all my a sales associate! I was able to shop without being stalked! I was also able to browse through the store without having to try to avoid the mass crowds of people like at other locations. This was like a shoppers paradise for me!
Congratulations downtown Macy’s you have found yourself another loyal customer. I just wish you offered free parking in the nearby garage (or do you?).

Don’t go if you don’t have too. Walked around in circles to find the escalators. One lady saw mke on the street and wanted to know if it was a real Macy’s. Didn’t have the heart to tell her not to go. But don’t GO!!! The floor plan and the department groupings don’t have any reason. Just don’t go to the downtown location. Living in the Washington DC metro area I have seen way better.

Wow! Clearance city!!! It is great because there aren’t tons of shoppers like at the mall and the sale staff was super helpful!!! We had the best sales lady helping us. Lorianne Gavin. She was one of the best sales lady to ever assist me!
We found tons of great sales items and had such a great shopping experience. I like that we could just walk there from our hotel too. (stayed at Drury Plaza by the Arch.)

I’m updating my review of Macy’s downtown location. I’ve gone over there several times recently and my biggest peeve (the lack of sales personnel to help you during the lunch hour) seems to be no more. I’ve been back three different times and found myself amazed that sales personnel actually approached me to see if I needed assistance. Kudos to Macy’s for fixing this annoying problem!

Macy stores in St. Louis could rightly be broken up into three tiers, the first of which would include the flagship stores at West County Mall and the Galleria, the second tier which would include everything besides the former Northwest Plaza and Downtown, and then NW and Downtown.
Comparing this outlet to the others is bound to leave the guest disappointed and underwhelmed. It’s not like the newer Macy’s stores (in design, in stock or in staffing) and the investment to get it there isn’t being made. When used for its limited strengths though, it’s not the worst place to conduct business.
Selection throughout the departments is limited and the availability of an associate can be difficult as well. For staple items though (think undershirts, socks, a solid-​color polo, flip-​flips), Downtown Macy’s can usually accommodate. Shopping in a rush isn’t recommended, though I’ve never had a problem finding help when it was time to check out.
For whatever reason (tradition perhaps), there’s still a candy counter here that stocks a number of gift boxes and loose candies. It’s a nice option for a little pick-​me-​up during the day or a client gift in a pinch.
I don’t think it too much of a stretch to suggestion that with the growth of their online presence, it’s not completely unreasonable to use the Downtown store as a return centre if you happen to order two of something and only need one. The store can save you time by looking up the availability of items at other locations and requesting holds too.
Picking up socks, returning merchandise and getting candy aren’t really the reasons that Macy’s corporate would like for you to use this store (at least not exclusively), but they’re useful functions nevertheless and worth keeping in mind as a limited Downtown asset.
That they may occasionally stock a good deal and carry decent merchandise should be enough to give the store the occasional look over lunch.

I thought I lost my lip gloss, so I needed to stop in here to pick some up. I stopped in within an hour of them opening on Monday morning. I knew exactly what I wanted so I headed to the Lancome counter. Apparently, they scheduled one sales person to run five or so cosmetic counters. She was helping one couple when I got there at one of the other counters. She let me know that she’d be with me in just a moment, but people kept stopping her at the counters she was standing near before she could get to me. Finally, after 10 minutes (yes, really), I asked one of the jewelry counter associates if there was anyone else who would help me because the other woman had too many customers to get to me. A minute or two later someone from one of the other jewelry counters came by, asked if I knew what it was I wanted (not at all rudely, she just was’t familiar with cosmetics and therefore couldn’t offer much help). I did know which gloss I wanted, but I wanted to see a few other colors because all they had displayed were a variation on a brown theme. She called someone to find out where the lip glosses I wanted even were, and also asked if there were other colors besides what was displayed. Apparently there weren’t. So there goes 15 – 20 minutes wasted. I was pretty disappointed with the fact that they were so poorly staffed and I had to spend so much time there for nothing.

This is a department store that closes at 6pm. Downtown. Every other Macy’s in St. Louis is open till 11pm.

i went here just to look at the furniture based on other review. The store itself was pretty depressing. Neighborhood feels oppressively empty and kind of scary. I saw maybe 2 or 3 other shoppers during the 30 minutes I browsed around, and at least one dodgey young guy who looked like he was trying to find an easy target. Needless to say, the guy working in furniture was very helpful and they had some awesome deals on clearance. I will return to browse their clearance furniture section again soon.

The store itself is a amazing testament to a bygone era in retail when they were downtown and easily assessible to all… but what really rocks are the amazing people who always wait on me on the second floor… they make me feel really good and are always so professional. I believe that is why i keep coming back… Hmmm…should I mention names probably not but there are some outstanding people working in the shoe department & also in the men clothing area… My only disappointment gripe — -no electronics department in 2008…

I despise Macy’s and since the location I’m reviewing is in Mid Rivers Mall (which I think is where stores go to die and rot in hell), it doesn’t help it any.
For my wedding I received this GORGEOUS Kate Spade crystal vase from Macy’s but it wasn’t the right pattern. I decided to take it back (the person was awesome and gave me a gift receipt) and exchange it for another place setting of my china and use a gift card (also a wedding gift) for another place setting of my flatware. I checked online before I went and it appeared that while my china was the exact same price as at Bed Bath and Beyond (where we registered), the flatware was actually less expensive. AND, they had both in stock so I got to take them home with me that day (rare). I thought I’d hit the jackpot.
Wrong.
China: same price. Flatware: TEN DOLLARS MORE!
I could have overlooked the price (since I had the gift card anyway), but then homegirl at the cash register decides to lay on the Macy’s-guilt that I didn’t register there and have subsequently «missed out» on their 15% off «sales event!!» for newlyweds. Um? What good does this information do me now? You already know I’m married, so why are you making me feel bad for the inability to go back in time and register for my china at Macy’s in hopes of attending the elusive «sales event.» (Bed Bath and Beyond gave us 20% off, by the way, you dumb cow).
She literally stopped scanning my items (as if in shock) when she heard I didn’t register at Macy’s for them. Like it makes a bit of damn difference? I’m spending almost $ 200.00 here now!
And just in case any brides are trying to gather some info about registering at Macy’s in comparison to Bed Bath and Beyond, here’s my two cents. BBB will carry all of the china patterns you like at Macy’s but for less money — PLUS you can get ALL of your other household stuff there for way less money.
But in case you need more convincing, here’s why I didn’t register there:
In February (shortly before my future husband and I registered) I went to Macy’s to get a gift for a friend’s wedding. I waited in line for TWENTY FIVE minutes (behind ONE customer) to have the sales woman (we’ll call her Sales Associate #1) pull a registry for me. I had another sales associate (we’ll call her #2) approach me TWICE and ask if there is any way she can help me. I said BOTH times, «Well, I just need to pull a registry.» And both times she gave me a blank stare which made me want to stab her with my Kate Spade flatware. Not to mention, the rest of the time, #2 was aimlessly wandering around the sales floor looking lost and bewildered as if she’d recently escaped from a nearby convalescence home.
Once I got in front of the customer who felt the need to use #1 as her personal shopper for what could only have been 10 different weddings, the associate informs me that she CAN’T pull a registry (which I am still sure is absolute B.S.) and that I have to get it at the self-​serve kiosks. I guess I could have looked around for it, but they have it stashed behind the wall and I really didn’t see it, plus, you’d like to think #2 would have informed me when I told her not once, but TWO TIMES what I was standing in line for.
Long story short, my friends registered for a bunch of really expensive crap (and I’m poor). So instead of giving them a gift card from Macy’s, I got them one to Bed Bath and Beyond. They should have registered there to begin with. And thus, I decided not to put my wedding guests through the same circus.
So don’t register there, and unless you have a high threshold for pain and annoyance — don’t shop there either.

Trapped in the downtown area on a Friday with nothing to do, I headed over to Macy’s, figuring I could pick up a few staples and see what the local offerings were. OMG this place is a dump. No Chanel counter, no Philosphy, no Origins, no Fresh. I got upstairs to see if clothing is any better — nope. This place is like where last year’s offerings at the major Macy’s go to die. Even the jewelry looked like it had a layer of dust on it.
Skip it and head out of town to one of the major shopping malls.
A shame when you think that the All Star game is coming here in 2009 and the people down there will have NOTHING to spend their money on except baseball souveneirs and a ride up the arch.

speaking entirely for the furniture department, I was impressed. I expected dumpy, suburban old-​people furniture. Instead we found everything from modern-​but-​not-​cold, contemporary-​but-​not-​glass-​sculpture-​contemporary and dumpy, suburban old people furniture. I’m kinda dissappointed we got our new couch elsewhere, because they had some great pieces at respectable prices.
