I’ve been using Nick for over 5 years at Preston’s. Great service with a friendly team. Definitely recommend.

The worst salon ever to experience. Horrible staff, rude manager, the worst hairstylists, and over priced services. To top all of that, they will cancel on you at their own convenience. Avoid Zach Taylor especially, he is the rudest and most unprofessional and will talk to you like he is doing you a favor.
AVOID THIS PLACE!!!

Only place in the Lou I’ll go for a cut/​color. I’m shocked by the reviews, since Ive only had positive experiences here for the past 2+ years. If you are looking for a good stylist– request Irena!

horrible service, especially by «Zach», they took a payment then they cancelled, and now wont return money for service not provided, had to get lawyer to get my money back.

If I could give less than one star I totally would. I found this place on google as somewhere close to me so that is why I picked it. I went in for a drastic change (red hair to blond). I knew it would be a process but the guy told me it could be done potentially in stages. I said it was fine as long as in between I didn’t look moronic.
Fast forward 4 hours and $ 500 (yes that much) My hair was patch neon orange and blondish. It looked so terrible I didn’t know what to do. I called the next day to say I just wasn’t happy with it and the god awful manager had been waiting for my call. They knew they had done a bad job and were literally waiting for my complaint. However, instead of treating me kindly for all the time and money I spent for clown hair she was ridiculously rude to me and said I could come in at full cost to get it fixed.
What was I supposed to do? I went back in to get it fixed but the same guy turned it into the most god awful dishwater dirty mousey blond. I told him it was mousey and he started getting super rude telling me I was wrong. I sat in his chair crying for a couple minutes then paid my extra money and left. Had to get it fixed somewhere else.
This place is awful. Overpriced, no talent, no class. I also took issue with them offering me wine when they clearly do not have a liquor license. They didn’t check my id and when I asked what if I’d been a minor they said, «oh we wouldn’t have cared». SKETCH!

I was very excited to give Preston Salon a try. I saved up to get my hair colored and a facial. I am going back into dating again! Unfortunately, I put my trust into the hands (and wallet — this is a rather pricey salon for lack of service!).
I have had my hair colored for years, and I do not feel this technician was terribly skilled. My grey was not covered at all, whereas it has always been in the past. (I have just a shimmer around the temples and the forehead). The roots were barely covered. The woman doing my facial seemed disorganized and rushed, not the feeling you want for a relaxing facial.
I do not recommend Preston Salon. I will be contacting the owner, but to be honest, am not interested in going back and wasting my time for additional services.

Not sure there is a five star hair salon anywhere. Had haircuts all over the world, so since I do not need major services or colors or whatever chicks spend a thousand on, this Place is my choice. The location, staff and stylist Perry make my experience hassle free. Perry has brilliant tattoos on his arms and is mellow. His calmness, poetic artistry for my hair, and not ever pushing products, clicks. Nick and shampoo crew Tess and moms have been there forever. Best location in region, you can hit Starbucks, dine well or stroll in the Hanley wydown hood. Parkings a bit slim for my f150 so I grab a metered spot.

I am often surprised, in the service industry, how little attention is paid to just that.
I had a Groupon to redeem, and called about 4 months ago to redeem. Of course, their «next available appointment» was 3 months in the future. I’m used to that with Groupons, they are often so booked up or have limited manicurists willing to work for Groupon customers. However, they said they wouldn’t be able to even redeem my coupon after 5 p.m., which clearly doesn’t work for someone who works full-​time. I asked them to reconsider and bring the issue to a manager – who called me back a few hours later to confirm that they could get me in during an evening (three months in the future). OK, that’s fine, I booked for a day or two before a wedding, knowing I’d want to pretty up.
Fast forward to the end of July. I get a call the day before my appointment, telling me that they had to cancel, and there would be no opportunity to schedule in the foreseeable future. Really? They explained that their manicurist was out giving birth, or on bed rest – and that they didn’t know when she would be back. OK, I understand, no one can plan for for a medical issue (poor woman!). They said I could use the face value (not even the purchased value!) of the Groupon for another salon service. I explained that wouldn’t work, that I already have a great salon I use (Studio Branca – amazing!) and that I wanted a mani/​pedi. I asked why they waited to call me until a day before – and got an impatient, unfriendly, gruff response about «having so many people to call.»
Things happen, but this was too many strikes for Preston Salon, and the worst part was how unfriendly and un-​accommodating they were throughout the entire process. Groupons result in an influx of customers, I get that – but they are POTENTIAL future customers – which I will certainly not be. I feel like more could have been done to remedy the cancellation, offer another manicurist, or attempt to reschedule at a future date. Nope, none of that.
Lucky for me, I found a great (and so reasonable) salon, that’s not a «high-​end» salon, but treated me 10x better than Preston. I’ll be going there for now on. In fact, check it out:
And while I can’t speak to their cut/​color service, if you’re coming here to check out using Preston i the future – I’d recommend bypassing their poor service entirely and checking out Studio Branca. Five years there for me, and never a bad experience. Ever.

My daughter and I were in St. Louis for my son’s wedding last weekend and used Ryan (for make-​up) and Anne (for styling) two days in a row. As New Yorkers, both of us were concerned that we’d leave with «big hair» and overly applied make-​up. We couldn’t have been more wrong. The results were wonderful! I have never had make-​up applied so well… who knew I could look so great? Because the wedding was black tie, I had an updo done, and it was very sophisticated and modern. Worth every one of the five stars I’ve given them:)

When I lived in St. Louis, I came here for all my hair color appointments and they were great. Not as good as my stylists in NY or LA, but by far the best I had in St. Louis.

I only went in for the ionic foot detox. I wanted to do a cleansing and Preston was the only place the popped up in the google engine foe this service in my area
However, I was not impressed at all. There was no designed area for the procedure in this «upscale» salon spa. I thought it was very distasteful to have me sit in some random corner surrounded by stylists and clients being serviced at the same time. The receptionist filled my foot bowl w/​water, set the timer, handed me some papers to read and was off to something else until the timer bell «dinged». He unhooked me & sent me on my way with a suggestion of drinking plenty water. Which I believed should have been provided w/​this service.
It lasted 30 min and I felt no different from the time I walked in. I saw zero results so I was extremely disappointed that I’d paid $ 50 for a service I was very excited to try.

Amazing stylist! I used a groupon for cut, style, scalp/​hair treatment and lip and brow wax. What a nice treat for the holidays. Yvette was great, she really understands hair and gave me a perfect cut, even complimented my natural hair color. Only problem is I can’t afford to keep going there. $ 65 is more than double what I pay now. (yet quality may equal price, considering how great my hair looks)

I, like many other Unilocalers, went to this salon because I had purchased a groupon. I had mani/​pedi services done, and I was happy with them. Melinda, my technician, was very nice and made good conversation throughout the whole thing. I got a Shellac manicure and a regular pedicure. I enjoyed the standard spa chair they had there for the pedicure, and my foot massage was very nice. Everyone there seemed friendly and it was pretty steady for a Friday morning. I give 4 stars because of my manicure. There is some bubbling in the polish, which to me is unacceptable for a manicure that cost $ 45 regularly. At the end of my visit I was given a coupon for a discounted mani/​pedi next time, and a little goodie bag as a new client. Overall a positive experience.

I bought a Groupon for a cut and style and was eager to try them out. The gentleman on the phone who made the appointment was very courteous. When I came in the gentlemen who checked me in again was very friendly and professional. My stylist was Zack and he did a great job with my long, thick hair. He gave me just what I wanted.
The only criticism I have is that the work stations could have been cleaner. After watching Tabitha’s Salon Takeover a few times you tend to notice the little details, and I thought their workstations could use a makeover.
I asked what the regular price was to make sure I tipped appropriately and I did think it was pretty expensive at regular price.

I’m shocked to read any bad reviews about Preston’s because this place is great! As someone who is very particular about what salon I go to and who even touches my hair, I will never go to anyone other than Zach T. at Preston’s.
Zach always gives me a great cut that is flattering in a way that’s classic but trendy at the same time. Even better is his coloring skills, I am always so impressed with how great he makes me look every time. He’s quick but thorough and knows how to make each client look good. Friends have told me that Zach is really great with extensions and up-do’s, too.
Make sure when booking your appointment that they don’t double book you, I’ve had this happen once and I blame it on the appointment-​setter (Louis?)

Called Groupon and got my money back for my facial at Preston. Horrible experience, and «Val,» the office manager, hung up on me when I called. Unpleasant people and negative experience. I was talking about it here at work and others have had similar bad experiences. Apparently the salon used to be great, but has since really taken a nosedive.
I do want to add that, as noted by other Unilocalers, the receptionist and stylist I dealt with on the phone were extremely friendly. Too bad their boss is such a witch.

I went to Preston’s (for the first time) for a facial this morning. My appointment was scheduled for 9am, and when I arrived on the dot, they were still setting up. The computers weren’t up, the TV was shut off, the floors were dirty, and the staff were stressed. Not a great way to start a Saturday morning or to make a first impression on a new client! They should at least get their staff to come in 30 minutes before they open.
After waiting for 15 minutes, I was led into a tiny room (barely enough room for two adults standing) with Jazz (who gave me an insincere «sorry for your wait») and told me to put on a towel, but could leave my bra on. What about my jeans? Should I lie down? Based on my experiences at other salons, I left my bra on (since they specified I should), but took off my jeans and got under the blanket. It took her about 5 more minutes to come back, and the room was freezing.
The rest of the facial was ho-​hum. It was more like a massage for my face than a skin treatment. She didn’t do any extractions, she used one exfoliating cream and a bunch of lotions, and a few hot towels. The majority of the time was spent massaging my face with lotion. Too bad she was a bit rough and when massaging my neck, it felt like she was choking me. I could be exaggerating, but the facial was not relaxing or comfortable. My skin does feel softer, but I don’t think I’ll go back for another facial. (I recommend Ginger Bay for facials and massages.) Also, it was supposed to last 60 minutes, but with waiting when I first walked in and ending early, I’d estimate it was more like 40 – 45 minutes.
The receptionist, however, was VERY helpful (don’t know her name). I asked her about some of their hair products, she explained the difference between two recommended products, gave me some free samples, and a $ 10-​off coupon if I decide to come back and purchase one of the products she recommended.
They do try to pressure you to book another appointment on the spot (if I did, my next facial would have been $ 59 instead of regular priced at $ 75). Needless to say, I didn’t rebook the facial, but I’d consider going back for a haircut.
(FYI — they only have two estheticians and one tiny spa room for all spa services.)

Is it possible to give less than one star?
I was a big fan of Preston’s for many years until I went there one day for an all over color. The shampoo girl did not wash out all of the dye and I went home not realizing this. The next day I woke up and had CHUNKS OF HAIR missing around my head. It litterally had eaten away my hair. I had to get all of my hair cut paid for extensions– which were not fuzed correctly. Paid $ 1000 + for these extensions which lasted about 3 months-​rather than the 6 I was told they would. The extensions, because of placement ended up knotting the back under part of my hair into dreads. My hair is still growing out and has not made it to the length that was «eaten away by the color/​bleach».

The only other hair experience as technically precise as the the stylist team I have been going to for years (and I like to shake things up every now and then to try the stylists the center of the buzz). Staff was a lot of fun, very welcoming.
Perry worked wonders with my post-​pregnancy hair and styled an über and understated cool do in time for a wedding rehearsal dinner. The salon also has various spa services and many fun Friday and earlier-​in-​the-​day bonus treats. Will have to time some a bit better next time.
And that they were familiar with Unilocal… well, they’d get a sixth star if that was a possibility.

My entire family (dad included) have been going here for years. My regular stylist is Perry, and I would give him my first born sometimes to get an appointment, but in times of need I have gone to others and NEVER been disappointed in the way my hair came out. (And being the frizzy haired kid that I am, trust me, this is a feat).
The parking situation is less than awesome, but being in downtown Clayton and having a free lot is amazing, regardless of how much maneuvering you have to do to get in and out of it. It’s not cheap, but it’s your hair, and you might as well spoil yourself once in a while. But the high light of Preston Salon, having Tess do your shampooing. Trust me, you’ll realize the money you just dropped was worth every penny.
