Store is very clean and modern. Nicer than any of the studios I’ve been to in St. Louis. I was a walk-​in and Mikah helped me out with a beautiful, cursive quote on my collarbone. Everything was fast and easy, yet still very well done. Three months later and my tattoo is still just as beautiful. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting a great tattoo in St. Louis where they can also feel comfortable and safe, knowing that everything is sterile.

Popped in to get some work done and was very impressed with the studio and service.
I emailed a design and we were off and rolling in 15 minutes.

My friend and I came home to St. Louis and decided to get tattoos while we were home. This place was recommended from another friend. They do great work. It’s super clean. They fit us in quickly. My tattoo didn’t hurt one bit. My tattoo symbolized me coming home after a major tragedy in my life. Every time I look at it, it reminds me of home and the trip that healed my heart after the loss of mother. Definitely recommend this place.

Ok I feel terrible because I forgot my artist’s name, but all of the artists were friendly and professional. I stopped in on a road trip for a simple piece– my artist had other plans. He took my basic idea and drew up a gorgeous piece that tied in with my existing one. I was nervous going here because I had never even heard of it until the day of, but I got really lucky and picked an amazing place. I got lettering and somewhat simple artwork in black and white for a great price. When he quoted me before hand, I thought he was only talking about the lettering for the price and I was fine with that, but it was for the entire piece. If I’m ever back in St Louis I’ll be back for another piece.

I have only recommended to friends to come here for the very best tattoos and piercing experience! Everyone is specifically talented in all the same but different ways. My guy is Dustin N. He has done the very best big tattoos on me with spectacular coloring and how light weight and not heavy handed at all and he is very fast and gentle! Give him your money!!! In all seriousness THE NICEST MOST URBAN HIP JOINT IN THE HEART OF SAINT LOUIS WITH GREAT ARTISTS!

I recently traveled from Austin, TX to St. Louis, MO for an anthropology conference. While visiting I decided I wanted a new tattoo to commemorate the trip. Before flying over I called a couple of places around town, but was not having luck finding someone I wanted to work with — most places were not friendly or helpful at all over the phone. When I got to St. Louis I decided I would give it one more shot, So, I walked the 15 blocks to visit Self Inflicted.
As soon as I walked in I was SO glad none of the other places I previously tried worked out. The artists were very friendly and professional, and the shop was clean and welcoming. I wanted a honeybee (state insect of MO!) on my arm and Tom was willing to work on me even with the short notice. After hearing me out he did his own research on the morphological characteristics of honeybees and drew me up a stencil… which was amazing! He even added a really cool watercolor-​like background.
So far it is healing perfectly. Redness went down overnight, and after a day it is already looking perfect and smooth — so far it doesn’t seem like there will be any trouble spots. This is likely because Tom was attentive and is good at what he does.
All that being said… if you want a kick-​ass, colorful, and stylish tattoo, go see Tom. He is worth every cent. One of the best tattoo experiences I have ever had.

Got a tattoo here about a month ago. Now that it’s healed its a very subpar tattoo. For a small tattoo, many mistakes were made. I returned to the shop recently to have my tattoo touched up & the artist who did it said he would touch it up for $ 50. Thr night the work was done the artists said «If you need that touched up, let me know». Now, they wanted me to drop more cash on a questionable tattoo. No thanks, I’ll go somewhere else & have it fixed or covered up.

This place is super clean, the cubicles are really nice and the dudes are nice as hell. We called to ask about walk-​in availability and they luckily had had a cancellation and fit us right in. Mikah’s stencils were 100% perfect just from him eyeballing our skin. He was very accommodating, his line work is super solid and he works really fast and efficiently. I work in a top-​rated tattoo shop and normally I wouldn’t go anywhere else but these guys are amazing. ¹⁰⁄₁₀ would get tattooed here again.

Staff was friendly and clean environment. My boyfriend and I found SIS on Unilocal,walked in knew what we wanted and got down to business. Dustin worked on my 1^st Tat (Sankofa bird)& Wally B did my boyfriend’s tat (lettering with skylines). They both made it a great & comfortable experience.

This place was awesome. My best friend and I wanted to get matching tattoos, but our idea for them was a little odd, so I worried about finding an artist that could do our idea justice and make the tattoo a great memory that my now-​long-​distance best friend and I could treasure.
We didn’t make an appointment, just came in as walk-​ins, but everyone was super welcoming. We told the guy up front our idea for the tattoos, and he told us that a guy named Nate would love to do them for us and he to us they’d be $ 70. Nate was super nice and talkative, and he joked with us about the little soot sprites we were getting the entire time we were there.
After the tattoos were done, he instructed us on properly caring for them, and he was very clear. Both my best friend and I tipped Nate personally, $ 10 each, and he followed us back up front and told the guy to only charge us $ 50. It goes to show what appreciation can do :)
My best friend and I love our tattoos. They’re a reminder of a friendship that has lasted 15 years, and hopefully will last for many more, as well as representing something special and odd about ourselves. I couldn’t be happier.

Went in yesterday just to look at portfolios and spoke with one of their artists. Walked away with an awesome Memorial tattoo created by Nate for my mother on my arm. Nothing extravagant but I will definitely be back for more work. This was my first tattoo and first time in the studio. Extremely helpful and friendly staff with a great atmosphere. Even walked out with a piece of art for my wall.

Having Mikah and the team at this studio was the best idea I have had in a long time. Personalized service, professional work and a finished product beyond expectation is all I could ask for. Nice job gentleman!

Found this tattoo studio on Unilocal,read all the great reviews and decided to give it a shot! I’m glad I did, the guys there were great. Nate drew me up some custom cursive lettering for a quote I wanted and I couldn’t be happier about how it turned out! Thanks guys!

From a first timer: Self Inflicted Rocks!!!
I went to Self Inflicted for my first tattoo. I jokingly said that what I wanted («Detroit» In Old English, 72 pt font) was so simple, Black Pearl could have done it. But I wasn’t going to chance it just to save a few pennies.
Self Inflicted went ABOVE and BEYOND my expectations. I was a newbie, and a female at that, and my previous attempts at getting my work done resulted in artists attempting to seriously rip me off. But I waited and waited until my day off, when I could make it down to Self Inflicted, and I do not regret my decision to wait.
First of all, Self Inflicted gave me the BEST PRICE! When I spoke to Ian (my artist), and he told me his number, I started to say, «that’s it?» but caught myself mid-​sentence. Despite the fact that I was a newbie and a female, they did NOT give me the run around. My tat was dirt cheap; seriously. And NO, I was not a d*ck that tried to talk down my artist – this was the first price he gave me!
Ian went to the back with the design I brought in, and a few minutes later, popped back out with a beautiful sketch up of something he had in mind. Ok, I’d seen this tactic before, I thought, trying to upsell the customer. But I liked what he showed me, so I inquired on what it’d cost. «Another twenty bucks.»
Twenty bucks? I was in! While I waited for Ian to finish cleaning up his station before bringing me back, other customers and staff people up front kept me entertained and calmed my nerves. There was no cliquey, you’re-a-pussy-because-you-don’t-have-ten-tats-already atmosphere like I was honestly expecting for the best shop in the city. Everyone was super friendly and chatted me up, pumping me up for the experience and reassuring me that the pain would be nowhere near as bad as one expects. Psst: it wasn’t!
A little while later, Ian was ready for me. He was VERY professional and nice all throughout the process, and was happy to answer my questions and work with me. You know, I’m just going to say it: he was a total «sweetie,» exactly the kind of person I could have hoped to work with as a newbie.
Just before closing time, he finished up and I got to see the final job. He explained everything about how I would heal and how the shading would lighten despite how dark it looked. I tipped him 100% of what he quoted me, and headed home proud of my beautiful new work of art.

This is the best tattoo shop in St. Louis, surpassing the long heralded Iron Age in the Loop. The staff has some of the best tattoo artists in the city, and they can customize designs for you based off of very limited specifications or vague and abstract ideas.
They charge by the hour, every artist has a different rate — the atmosphere is laid back, the studio looks fantastic (especially after they installed their new windowfront). Ian Arseneau is my tattoo guy now after he drew up the sickest tattoo for me after I came in and said, «I want a mechanical cardinal». He mocked something up, it looked great, I wanted to change a few things and he was really easy to work with — and also… the tattoo artists is the expert — when I said I wanted something changed he told me: hey, I think it’ll look better like this. Just trust me. He was right, absolutely right.
They say it best at SIS: Invest in your skin.
