History
Established in 1921.
The James J. Hill Reference Library is an independent, non-profit business research organization. The Hill Library’s core purpose is to help clients access the practical business information they need to craft «informed business strategy» and make sound business decisions.
James J. Hill’s most significant gift to Saint Paul, the library was designed in the Italian Renaissance style with an exterior of pink Tennessee marble and massive columns of Kettle River sandstone. Hailed by modern critics as a «high point in Beaux Arts architecture in Minnesota,» the library broke ground in 1913, opened to the public in 1921, and was entered on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
The library also acts as a venue for weddings and events, hosting meetings, conferences, concerts, community events, ceremonies, and receptions. The grandeur of the building caters perfectly to weddings, and the entrepreneurial spirit draws young artists and members of the community to the library.
