I have been going here for over 15 years for a variety of services — massages, facials, waxing, body scrubs, hair, etc. Esther is the only person I trust to wax my eyebrows and gives amazing facials. I highly recommend her! Abby has done my hair a few times (updos and cuts) and is wonderful. You seriously walk out of this place feeling beautiful. The space is gorgeous, the services are great but the best part is the people who work there.

So I went there about a year ago and in booking myself for another spa day someplace else today because my sister-​in-​law gave me a gift certificate, I figured I should review this place because it was great and right now I wish the GC was for here. That could change tomorrow and I may like both places but here we go! I got a sampler type spa day here where I got 3 treatments. A massage, a scrub, and a facial. They squeezed me in but the order was off of what went first second etc. I was okay with this because I don’t really care. I got the 30min massage, then the scrub and i think the facial last or maybe it was the scrub last. Either way this scrub thing they have going there is the reason for life on earth. The woman who did this was completely amazing. I am not modest about massage so stripping down to my nothings and having scrub every inch of my body in a stone room with gigantic water sprayers is A-​OK with me. It was the most indulgent experience of my life and I am angry with myself that I haven’t found time to go back. I would go once a week if I were independently wealthy. The facial we converted to a peel instead because the scrub lady was also a very good aesthetician for this sort of thing. She knew that the facial would do nothing for my skin but a peel would so I had that done. During the process she introduced me to the clarisonic and suggested I buy one and how to use it. I own one now that I got at Sephora and its wonderful. PS Don’t buy the cheap ones they spin and the clarisonic does not. The spin ones (which I bought first oops!) tear dead skin off and can make you redder if you have adult stress acne like me :) Anyway I love this place. It doesn’t look to me like the pictures as much maybe because I was mostly in the basement and didn’t get my hair and nails done but I still love it. Get a scrub I promise you will be happy forever. Parking is street which I didn’t have an issue that day but I can see there being some trouble on certain days but luckily its on a corner in a more residential style area.

My daughter-​in-​law and I could not have been happier with the service we received when we went here for hair and make-​up in preparation of my son’s wedding on Nov. 15, 2014. The atmosphere was beautiful, friendly, and professional. The hairdressers did a fantastic job and the make-​up professionals made us look beautiful, while still holding onto a natural look. We both left it up to them and they did not disappoint. Trustworthy and a huge benefit for the Hawthorne Hotel to have in it’s vicinity. Thank you Andrew Michael’s Salon! You are awesome!

I honestly could not be more happy with my hair and the service I receive here! I have lived in Salem going on 3 years now & it took me until recently to find someone who could tame this wild mop & actually do what I wanted in terms of color.
Abigail is amazing. Not only is she a sweetheart, she is a talented stylist. I LOVE my haircut and color– I have gotten so many compliments on it. Yes, this salon is on the more expensive side, depending on the services, but it is worth every cent-​you definitely get what you pay for!

If you are looking for an experienced and creative hair stylist/​colorist, I highly recommend Nicole. She is amazing and does a great job every time. It is nice to work with a stylist/​colorist who is passionate and cares about her clients and how they look and feel.

After posting my review I received a message to please give the salon/​spa a call. I followed up with Jen who graciously offered to me to give them another chance. I was booked with Esther, who was night and day compared to the previous esthetician. I received a facial that was top notch and tailored to my skin. Thank your for proving to me that you you can be a great spa!

Being new to the area, I was skeptical trying new waxing salons. I was driving 2 hours round trip before I was recommended to Andrew Michael Spa– specifically Ester. Not only does she do a fantastic job, but she is very professional and personable. Needless to say, I’m hooked.

I’ve been coming here for about 8 years. I used to live in Salem when I started coming here. I live in Haverhill now and make the drive 45 min to an hour just to go here. I love my hairdresser, Tammy. Before going here, I tried many different stylists to no avail. I’m very picky with my hair, but Tammy knows exactly what to do without any advice from me. No longer do I have to nit pick. She colors my hair perfectly. I trust everything she does or any idea she has.
I also come here for my facials. I see Esther, who I love! She has made my skin so much better since coming here. She’s a great person and wonderful to talk to. She makes every visit a serene one!

Went there cause they had keratin treatments they told me my hair would be straight. They suggested if I wanted it really straight to go with the Rejuvinol come to find out hundreds of dollars later it’s just a frizz treatment. When I went back to say that I wasn’t happy they said well it’s not a straightening treatment. I probably would’ve still gotten it I just wish they were honest. Customer service is terrible there they don’t even return your phone call and the manager kept me waiting when I went there to go see her about this she knew she had an unhappy customer and she just didn’t care. Worst salon ever!

I’ve been coming to Andrew Michaels for almost 8 years, and see Esther for my bikini waxes. Esther is an absolutely FABULOUS aesthetician — she’s fast, thorough, very efficient, and cool to talk to! My comfort is her first priority, always greeting me with a big smile, and graciously offering me coffee or hot tea prior to my sessions. If you’ve never had a wax, or are debating whether to finally target those compromising areas (bikini, or better yet the brazilian!) then GO SEE ESTHER! She’s a breath of fresh air, and will make you feel totally comfortable throughout your whole experience. I’ve told all my friends about Esther, and highly recommend you make an appointment with her also!

I recommend this place to anyone looking for a great haircut! I’ve also had an amazing massage there and manipedi. The staff are so nice, and the place is GORGEOUS. I’ll never need to go to another salon!

After living in New England for several years, I can finally say I no longer need to go back to NYC to get my hair cut/​colored. FINALLY! After seeing the work that Michael did on my mother-​in-​law and sister-in-law’s hair, I was convinced enough to give him a try. The salon itself is beautiful and the staff were so friendly.
I booked my appointment for a cut with Michael. We chatted about my hair and what I had in mind (nothing, I left it totally up to him) and after a wash, he went to work snipping and shaping. In the end, I got an amazing cut (back to chin length and absolutely PERFECT!). You know a cut is great when you’re able to recreate the look at home without taking forever or tons of product to make it happen.
I’m going back this week for Michael to retouch my base and add some highlights back in. I like that they do different types of highlights — namely balaige and not just foils. I also like that the stylists take the time to get to know not just what you want, but what effort you want to put into maintaining your style and color. This is important because if you don’t want to be back in the salon every 4 – 6 weeks, then you need to make that clear from the beginning. I found Michael really open to the fact that I didn’t want a cut that took too long to style, preferred a cut that was versatile (that I could straighten but that would also work well with my naturally curly hair), didn’t want to use a lot of products and didn’t want unnatural, chunky highlights.

I was in my first year at Salem State and desperately needed a foil. I found this place online and thought it looked perfect. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
The place itself is really beautiful. The set up is great, and while waiting for my hairdresser they offered me water, etc. But once I sat down in the chair it was a different story.
The man who did my hair was probably the rudest and most judgemental person I have met in my life. He made conversation with me by asking a million questions about where I was from, what I did for work, etc. etc. but once he found out I was a student I could tell he wasn’t asking these questions to get to know me better, he wanted to know if I could afford the foil. I’m not joking and I wish I was. This was all confirmed when he said «Because you do know how expensive this place is, right?» I have been to many salons and I have never had such a terrible experience.
He put toner in my hair and told me he would not charge me for it, even though I made no protest about it being too expensive. He criticized the length of my hair, telling me that «long hair is just a phase that every girl goes through». Well…3 years later I still have long hair. Must be an awful long phase, huh? I will NEVER go back. I’ve had much better experiences and much better foil jobs elsewhere.

I went to Andrew Michaels Spa today for a massage and a facial. They do not offer hot stone massages, which was a bit of a disappointment, but my «customized massage» was done by Colleen and she did a great job. She was friendly and relaxed, and she asked me for input on how I’d like my massage before she got started. I told her that I preferred a firm touch and she shouldn’t be afraid to press pretty hard, and boy, she wasn’t! She also asked whether or not I wanted my feet done in case I was ticklish and preferred she not go there — a nice consideration. I was very pleased with her work and would definitely get another massage from her in the future. The only thing I would have changed about the experience is to add some kind of aromatherapy to it — the lotion Andrew Michaels used for my massage was totally unscented, and for me the relaxation factor would have been turned up a few notches if I had something nice to smell during the experience. However, the lotion was highly moisturizing, which is of course great during the winter! So all in all I’d still grade my massage an A.
My facial was done by Esther, and she was outstanding. Before today I’d never had a facial, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. Could it really be worth $ 90 just to have someone else wash your face for you, basically? Well, my friends, the answer is YES! There’s so much more to a facial than that, at least at Andrew Michaels. Esther gave me a very relaxing scalp, face, neck, shoulder, and arm massage along with the skin treatments, and she was very gentle (but effective) during the extraction phase. I loved the products she used, they all smelled and felt amazing. And speaking of products, I was a bit afraid that I’d be pressured to buy a bunch of them as part of the experience — but nope! She did make some recommendations, but not at all in a sales-​y way. It was more like having your sister or your friend say «Oh hey, I tried this product last week and it’s awesome — you should give it a shot sometime!» It was such a relief not to have to deal with being «sold» while I was trying to de-​stress. Grade for facial: A+
With grades like these, you may be wondering why I rated Andrew Michaels Spa 3 stars rather than 5. It’s because my closing experience was pretty much the pits. After my services were over I went to the lobby to check out the products for sale. I was ready to purchase several skincare items thanks to Esther’s no-​pressure sales technique, and I was trying to find them on the shelves when the desk clerk called me over to ring me up. Unfortunately for the spa, they lost out on all of that revenue thanks to the clerk’s abject lack of assistance. When I approached the woman who called me to the counter, she was totally cold and unfriendly. She did not say hello, she did not ask me how my experience was, she did not ask me if she could help me find anything, she just said she could ring me up and that was about it. I handed her a gift card to cover the massage portion of my visit, so she rang that through, told me the remaining balance, and then asked her co-​worker at another register for change to break the bills I handed her. She then handed me the change and said nothing else. Not «Goodbye,» not «Have a nice day,» nothing. I wasn’t offered a receipt, either. Honestly, the vibe I got from the desk clerk was, «We have your money, now get the f*** out!» Kind of a strange attitude for a spa employee, no? People go to spas to find oases of comfort, wellness, and tranquility, not to be treated like they’re at a tollbooth on the Pike! It was more than a little jarring to be handled with such disdain and curtness after just having spent 2 hours (and over $ 200) being pampered by other members of the same staff, and it was definitely not a good note on which to leave the spa. Will I be back to Andrew Michaels after this? Hard to say. I had a great facial and massage, sure, but the desk staff was awful. There are great massage therapists and estheticians all over eastern Massachusetts, and I don’t see any reason why I would choose to repeatedly subject myself to being treated with such rudeness post-​service when there are so many other choices out there. As for the products, I’ll be buying them from Sephora or Amazon because they both know what good customer service is.

I have to say I go just about every two months. I had a horrible experience getting my eyebrows once when the lady just sat there and made fun of how thick they were but ever since I’ve had this lovely lady. Who just does everything right and really makes my eyebrows look awesome :]. Ask for Ester.

I have been there once and NEVER, NEVER again. Granted it was in June of 2005, but the experience I had there has stuck w/​me all this time.
One of my bridesmaids arranged for 4 of us to get mani-​pedis there and specifically asked ahead if they could accommodate taking us all at the same time. Whoever she spoke to said they could, well, they couldn’t. My bridesmaid spoke to the manager about this and they did their best to accommodate that. (I will give them that.)
When I sat down w/​the esthetician she was really rude. She was huffy and curt. One of the other estecticians said to the bridesmaid that arranged this, «You know I thought you were going to be the biggest bitch, but you have turned out to be one of the nicest customers.» Doesn’t everyone appreciate a back-​handed compliment w/​their mani-​pedis? Classy.
The place overall was quite cold for a late-​June day, and we were told that it takes a while for the heat to come on (who needs heat in June?) and it’s worse in the winter. Because of all the things that went wrong, the manager gave me a gift certificate for a free pedicure. If I wasn’t w/​my bridesmaids who planned the day, I would have handed it back to her. I gave the gift certificate to my mother and have not been back.
I strongly recommend avoiding this place. It’s one thing if there are circumstantial problems (the hot water was out that day, and they were heating up the water for the pedis– that’s not their fault), but it’s a whole different issue when the staff are rude on several levels.

I’ve actually only had good experiences here. I always book with whichever junior stylist is there and i have found that they all have great sense of style and have been able to give me modern cuts that work well with my hair type. I also got a wonderful massage here. I now get my hair cut here all the time.
Only complaint is the price. Cut & Partial foil runs me about $ 150 with tip, and you cannot put your tip on a credit card (you can pay for the service on one though). I never carry cash and always end up having to run to the ATM and coming back to tip.

The building is lovely and that’s about where the pleasantries end. I’ve been to Andrew Michael’s quite a few times for a place that I’m not thrilled with. I’ve tried a few massages, a facial, a couple manicures and a couple pedicures. Fortunately, most of my visits were on gift certificates so I didn’t feel like I was wasting my money!
Every time I left, I just felt like it wasn’t anything great. I found their manicure stations to be really uncomfortable. The pedicures were okay, but I’ve had some great pedicures for half the price else where. The facial was the best out of any of the services I had, but that aesthetician is no longer with them, so I’m not in any rush to go back. They seem to have a pretty high turn over rate with the staff. That always makes me wonder.
As for the massages, the treatment rooms were very small with portable massage tables that wobbled on the tile floor and the massages were just mediocre. All in all, I’d rather fight the traffic and go somewhere in Boston than go to Andrew Michael’s again.
An FYI, if you do decide to go: the last time I was there they only took cash tips, so be prepared.

I found an old gift certificate for this salon and decided to try it out. The staff are very nice and the atmosphere is pleasant. My hair looked awsome when I left but alas, the story of my life, it requires too much upkeep to look like that everyday. I tell all my stylists that I am wash and go, no styling for me! And they all say «Oh yes, I know I know, this is perfect» And it never is. Overall, the prices are just too much for me and the quality wasn’t up to par. I would not go back.
