We started the business because we believed a café with top shelf ingredients and mid range prices would do extremely well in our location on Derby St in Salem.

Business Owner

We are two guys named Dan. Both Massachusetts natives, living on the North Shore. This is our first business venture together and we’re off to a great start. One Dan is a former Marine, the other a former Soldier — both are dedicated to providing world class espresso and café offerings at reasonable prices.

Five stars because my daughter and I had the best damn sandwiches ever! I had the Giuseppe which was tomato, arugula, red onion, fresh mozzarella, and pesto. AH-​mazing. My daughter had a turkey, bacon, arugula, and pesto sandwich and she woofed it down, pretty sure it was the best sandwich she’s ever had. The little location was exactly what you’d want in a neighborhood café. The man who waited on us, I believe is the owner, was friendly and personable. Even gave us a lesson on how to walk and eat a sandwich. Definitely, going back next time we’re in town! Next time breakfast!

I am updating because I didn’t mention the breakfast sandwiches in my previous review. $ 4 for a freshly made BEC on an English muffin or bagel. Killing the Sunday morning hungover game. Or I guess a regular day too.

Good local coffee shop with a chill vibe (at least in the morning when I went), a friendly staff and owner, and the welcome section of hot breakfast sandwiches. Pricing was reasonable. Could use a wider selection of pastries maybe, like a few more variations of croissants or something similar. Looking forward to trying some of their lunch sandwiches, which look promising.
The coffee was solid quality; wasn’t blown away but that’s rare, and I am perfectly happy with «Good» and don’t necessarily need Stellar. And for me it was the perfect temperature, hot but not scalding.
The owner was friendly and engaging if you want to just hang out and chat. But as important, I noticed that those customers on their way to work who just wanted to get in and out, the service was very prompt and to the point. Overall an easygoing vibe to the place, which I appreciate.

Derby Joe is a café in Salem that I can get behind. Our latte’s were hot and delicious. Breakfast sandwiches were made fresh, tasted fresh and were devoured post haste. I hear that they make some pretty amazing Chili and will report back after Scooby-​Doo and the Gang get their fill.
Friendly service. Fun environment. High quality product. Reasonable prices. So excited to have a proper café hitting all the high notes on the wharf side of Salem.

As an out-​of-​towny, this is the perfect place to both connect with the local community and drink some quality coffee. Derby Joe will serve you up with a hot breakfast sandwich or delicious pastry for a very reasonable price. The entire staff is friendly, professional and personable and care about what they serve.
To top the cake, if you love chess or you are interested in learning, there is a neat, growing community of players that will soon make it the go to place for a game over coffee. 10⁄10 would check again.

I was so excited for Derby Joe to open and I have been going consistently ever since. They are the only local coffee shop (with great coffee and appropriate prices) that is open early when I leave for work. The staff and owner are super friendly and, with Derby Joe’s awesome location, I love wandering down on a weekend morning and taking in the views of the water and historic buildings. I haven’t eaten here yet, though I have heard great things from anyone who has. Definitely give this place a try.

Finally, a place close by that serves GREAT coffee and pastries for a very reasonable price! My boyfriend goes every morning to place chess with the owner and have his morning cup o joe before work. We are both tough critics of customer service and good coffee, so a five start rating is a pretty big deal… I’m hoping they open another café since they are getting some great service. Keep it coming Derby Joe!

Very friendly environment. I had an iced coffee and my mom had a medium roast. Both were extremely smooth and not bitter at all. Very apparent that they care about quality. And the chairs are very comfortable. A much better experience than some of the more center located over crowded coffee shops.

I went in on the way back from the seven gables and tried a cannoli, the shell was stale so it ended up in the trash.
I got an ice coffee which was uninspiring. Owner messaged me so maybe I’ll go back to try it.

Finally, REAL coffee. I’ve had the drip, cold brewed iced, and espresso. All are tip-​top. I’ve me the two owners Dan and Danny who are super friendly, remember everybody’s name, and really want take customer satisfaction seriously. I’m looking to trying their sandwiches.

One week in and I’m liking what I see. Their iced americano is my jam. Salem was in need of a place that offers great coffee, friendly people, and keeps the price in check. Derby Joe is that spot. I was losing hope paying $ 5+ bucks at other places for 16 oz of coffee that tasted more like dirty sneaker water. Glad to see there is some much needed new competition in town.
