History

Established in 1975.

Started in 1975 owners Byron and Bonnie Anderson purchased Partie McPhearson Auto Service on the corner of State and Lancaster. May 1st, 1981, now known as P&M Automotive moved into what is now our current facilities at 264 Lancaster Dr. NE. In 1987 AAA Oregon/​Idaho began a new program which certified automotive repair shops in an effort to improve the quality of service provided and P&M was one of the first. In the 90’s we continued to grow and trained our staff so we could provide better customer service. In 2001 We further expanded, building and additional 9 bay shop and completely remodeling the current 12 bay facilities. We also enlarged the customer waiting area and built on a 2nd story for offices and employee lounge and kitchen areas. To finish the remodels new look we decided to add something that no one else has done by engineering and constructing a full scale NASCAR rotating on the roof of the shop, thanks to Bill McAnally Racing (BMR).

It’s little things that make or break an experience and thus unfortunately was a break experience. The service and repairs were fine though the price was a little steep (pretending you know about cars and using their lingo helps keep it reasonable).
The negative came when the person who checked us in noticed that our car is set up for our special needs daughter and it was a little dirty inside and out. When dealing with special needs children, there is no good time to clean out the car and it shows (embarrassingly sometimes). So he offered to vacuum our car and run it through the wash. We were so grateful and expressed our gratitude. Unfortunately when we came to pick up the car, not only had it not been cleaned as promised, it was actually dirtier than before with greasy smudges on the door panel and the handle. Bottom line is that I was really disappointed and will not be taking my car back.

I live in Vancouver, Washington, and while on a trip to help a family member my truck had wheel bearing problems. I nursed it to a local tire shop and asked what the best place was in Salem to get my truck worked on, they said P&M was the only place to go. So, I went there.
Place is hard to miss with a large replica of a NASCAR racer on the roof (big sign helped too). We wheeled in with our wounded truck and they took it in back immediately and shortly thereafter came up with a basic idea of the damage. Being a parts guy I knew it was going to take a while to gather the parts needed so we arranged for a rescue from the Mother In Law and waited at a nearby Dairy Queen and drowned our sorrows in a Blizzard or six.
P&M did a great job keeping me informed about the search for a new spindle which took some time, but it was not their fault. Eventually, the truck was done and ready to pick up. A cursory check of the work done revealed good quality brakes and workmanship. The truck was cleaner than when I brought it too. Mechanics aren’t cheap anymore, but if have to have work done you may as well bring it to a place where they care about good work and customer service. I know I learned a valuable lesson in this whole mess, my late brother was right when he said, «No good deed goes unpunished.» Haul your own stuff next time, Mother In Law!!!

Customer service here is quite possibly the worst I’ve ever encountered. The secretary alone is the most unprofessional, rude person I’ve ever met. My experience here included extreme deception and callousness. I will make sure to tell every person I know to avoid P&M like their life depended on it. Definitely the worst mechanic I’ve seen in all of Salem. RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!

After getting an estimate completed, I thought the price they quoted me was quite high for the services being completed on my car and they weren’t exactly sure what to do to fix it. I decided I would go somewhere else to get my car fixed. After I get out of work to come pick up my car, I find that my Bluetooth headset is missing out of the little compartment on my dash. I was about 100 yards down the road when I noticed and called to ask if they could look around for it. The manager told me that none of his guys would steal it and basically accused me of trying to scam them. I had just paid them $ 45 to look at my car and my Bluetooth was maybe $ 20. I’ll change my review if they eventually do something about the situation but they haven’t seemed willing until this point.

My car had been to two different Toyota service centers before going to P&M. Neither dealership had been able to determine the issue. P&M was finally able to find and fix the problem. The reason I’m not giving them five stars is because I my car ended up being there for three days and diagnosis and labor ended up costing around $ 600 for what ended up being a $ 150 part. The real kicker was that the code that all three places got from the car said exactly what the problem was, and yet it took three places and over a $ 1000 in diagnosis costs before that part was finally replaced. The other reason I am deducting a star is that I found out after paying and picking up my car that there is a 10% off coupon pretty much always available and yet I was not offered the 10% discount nor was the availability of the coupon mentioned. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me, but I think that if you are going to charge a first time customer a substantial amount of money because you couldn’t figure out what was wrong with their car the least you could do is mention that there is a coupon out there or just straight up offer the 10% off.

Excellent. P&M has done all my oil changes since my first day of service there. But I had to write an update because of this little gem.
I went in to get an oil change for $ 40 (My Tundra takes a lot of oil) and asked them to rotate the tires. Not ask if they needed to be rotated, I just figured they were due for a turning.
When the service was done, they came back and told me the tires all looked like good, even wear, so no rotation was due. They also knocked five bucks off my oil change since it took a little bit longer than usual to do the change-​over, so my total was $ 35. Once again, I was impressed by their upstanding honesty, as they could have rotated the tires and charged me regardless, as I have readily stated I am pretty dense when it comes to automotive maintenance.
Earning my business time and time again, they are.

Love these guys! We took my car back for a second (major) repair — it needed a front crank seal and they’d predicted a timing cover replacement, which on my car was a 3-​day, $ 1500+ job. They took care to check out the situation thoroughly and discovered it didn’t need as much work as they’d originally predicted, and ended up fixing the car in half the time for half of the dollars. When we went to pick it up, Matt at the service desk took the time to talk to us about some general questions we’d had about the car. He was super nice, honest, and professional.
Seriously, the best spot for automotive repair in Salem.

P&M Automotive helped me once when I had incurred my own bonehead accident and was able to tow me back to their headquarters and suggest a good repair shop for the damage. I was able to print out a coupon from their website to save 10% on the total charges. Service was courteous and friendly, the tow person was informative and quick. Recommended for one of the more reliable places in Salem.
