Went to lunch there today! Amazingly affordable and delicious. One of the cheapest restaurants in Southtown and amazing quality of food to boot. Had their Italian sandwich and tortilla soup for $ 7.50! Incredibly delicious

Outstanding, fresh and quality food here. Sandwiches are large, with mounds of fresh cut Boars Head meats. Soups are some of the best in the city, especially the tomato bisque. The hidden treasures are the desserts… wow. This place is well known to the downtown lunch crowd, but not so much to anyone else because they close at 1:30 each weekday. A hidden treasure in our city. Oh yeah, Barbara’s the best. She really cares for her customers and the restaurant.

Awesome. Their hot roast beef hoagie with au jus is so delicious. Plenty of beef in the hoagie and the au jus is so good.

Can’t believe there’s not more reviews on here. This place is one of the few non franchise/chain delis in San Antonio. If you’re a fan of fast, cheap, $ 5 sandwiches, this isn’t that kind of place. Besides Barbara’s friendly customer service,(she remembers you if you’ve been there twice and remembers regulars which is awesome), the atmosphere is really cool and quirky inside. There’s a lot of Leon Redbone, vintage movie posters, a lot of nostalgia with a unique perspective. I’m not entirely sure, but I assume Barbara, the older woman whose always here morning til close is the owner/proprietor of HB’s, so it is 100% independently owned and operated. I tip my hat to them for being entrepreneurs. I’ve had there breakfast as well as their lunch offerings. A morning staple that I haven’t had in quite a while are their fresh buttery raisin pecan cinnamon laden cinnamon rolls with a cup of Joe. The cinnamon rolls are very generous sized and sinfully delicious. With the weather being crap lately I think I might get one tomorrow morning just to boost my mood, lol. I do wish they had a bigger breakfast sandwich variety, but with cinnamon rolls this good I’ll probably never order a breakfast sandwich! The lunch selection is very large, too many sandwiches to name, they also make various soups fresh every day and the selection changes daily. I’ve had a few of their sandwiches, soups, and they’ve always been fantastic. They all have a homemade quality to them, the breads and cheeses can be customized, and the other cool thing is they offer different specials every day. The price is a little more than the run of the mill bill Miller’s, subway, etc, but the quality, ambience, is well worth it. It will be a sad day if this place ever closes.

We got there at 1pm on a week day and they were out if potatoes, burgers, and soup. It’s crazy that they would run out of food if that’s what your business is. If that was even the case.

After moving in to my new office just across the street from this restaurant, I have found them to not only be a great place for breakfast or lunch, but a great atmosphere to relax. Barbara makes you feel right at home, the food is reasonably priced, everything is clean, and its got a great old time downtown deli feel. If you’re downtown, or near the courthouse and need some breakfast or lunch don’t hesitate to stop by HBs! A new frequent spot for me!

I eat here a few times each month for lunch. Great sandwiches and fantastic sweets for dessert. Daily specials M-F. Barbara(the owner) is funny, super sweet, and remembers her regulars. It does get busy around noon, but you can call an order in and go to the front of the line to pick it up. Prices are very, very reasonable, especially for downtown.

Makes pretty good omelet. But Never, Never order a bean and cheese taco. The beans are from a can… gross! should be against the law to serve in downtown SA

HB’s is a great sandwich, potato, salad and soup kinda place. Barbara is the owner and is often at the register. She is great, remembers her customers and is always kind. It can be kinda busy right around noon as the courtroom is right down the road and a lot of jurists and lawyers come a calling when they are released for lunch. You can pick your bread, I typically get sourdough as it is very tasty. Then pick your sandwich. I usually get the club or the egg salad sandwich which is one of my favorites. You can also get a ½ sandwich and soup. Her soups are always very flavorful, but in the winter come early as the soup will typically run out. Yep she makes it fresh and that’s why its so good. If you can get your group together and order before 10:30AM they will deliver. Bring coins as most of the parking is by the meters and they will ticket you. Eat well, Erika

Cool old black and white pictures on the wall. Comfy feel, good selection, inexpensive. Need to ask for a key to use the bathroom, which, of course, is always a plus.

I’ve heard rave reviews and«meh» reviews, so I figured I had to see for myself. I went on Thursday, jonesing for a burger, and as luck would have it, that was the day’s lunch special. Unfortunately, they were plum sold out when my party and I got there. So, even though I had read a not so nice review of the French dip(or is it freedom dip? are we still boycotting the French or is that over now?) I decided to give it a whirl, and I’m glad I did. Although the sandwich was on foccacia, which I thought would be too moist a bread for all that meat, it worked well. Plus, instead of some tiny ramekin to dip your dip into, they give you a veritable coffee cup with aus jus. That little attention to detail made the meal! For some reason, I thought that a cup of baked potato soup and a whole sandwich was really necessary, when either one or the other would of sufficed. The soup was good, but I don’t have alot of soup savvy to give an adequate review. For now, I’ll have to say I’ll go back to try a burger and some baked goods. Since I went during a holiday weekday, it wasn’t too crowded, but since it’s relatively close to the court district, be aware of the legal eagle and juror crowds during the lunch hour.

Simple straight forward old fashioned Diner, with sophisticated simple old fashioned food. Bakery to die for, pray Barbara made the carrot cake. She recently tweeked the meatball sub, and took it over the top !!! A must try.

HB’s is a close walk for me from work and it well worth diving into the San Antonio heat ad humidity to get there. There is a fairly extensive menu for lunch and a decent offering for breakfast. The baked goods offerings are unbelievable in taste and quality. The owner, Barbara is awesome. She knows names and orders foe her regulars and make the new people feel like a regular. Go before the courts break for lunch tho.
