Hung Fong Chinese Restaurant

This place is pretty good! It used to be better but I still like it. The lemon chicken is my favorite and I love the yellow rice.

Above average food at best. Bejing Express is much better! My main complaint is that it is HOT inside this restaurant. HOT HOT HOT. With the temps outside at 100 it was miserable inside. HOT HOT HOT inside… GET IT!

This was a terrible disappointment. The food was seriously lacking in flavor. And I know that some chewy chicken is par for the cheap Chinese takeout course, but this chicken had gristle in almost every bite. And it wasn’t cheap. 2 chicken dinner orders with fried rice (it was very yellow and I think I had one tiny onion slice in mine, my husband’s was garnished with a single water chestnut sliver) and soggy egg roll cost 30 bucks with no fortune cookies to console us.

Here’s my recommendation: burn it down! (Metaphorically)
Let me explain…
It claims to be the oldest Chinese restaurant in San Antonio. That’s cool. But the food sucks! The sucking started with the egg drop soup. Blah! Served in a tiny little bowl fit for a Barbie in her dream house, it was nearly cold and in a jello like state of matter. And the waitress didn’t bring me any crunchies! Dang it! Next the dumplings, no. Just no. It was like a hot pocket’s step brother. Hot on the inside but weird on the outside. The accompanying sauce had jalapeños and was gross. We proceeded to try every sauce on the table with the exclusion of ketchup. Nothing could save these dumplings.
If we hadn’t already placed our to go order, we would have aborted this Chinese food mission with a quickness. However, the adventure continued when we opened our food at home. My beef and broccoli was like a beef stew out of a can in the clearance section of HEB. The fried rice is that atomic yellow rice that just doesn’t cut it for fried rice in my book. I ate the egg roll with disdain. I texted my dining companion to see if his food was any better. He told me to delete his number and never take him to another restaurant again.
So yeah, keep the building, make new sauces, acquire new recipes, hire a new cook, that’s the only way this restaurant should continue on.
(Loved the waving kitties for sale at the front however!)

I really wanted to like this place but it was just plain TERRIBLE. Great service, old but still okay décor, the food… worse I’ve ever had. Panda Express is better quality and authentic. Not a fan of the prices either. Don’t go here.

My four coworkers and I ordered lunch to go today and they were excited to try Hung Fong for the first time. Unfortunately were not able to taste anything; when we opened the bags there were roaches crawling around inside. My coworkers took pictures but I will not post them here. After refusing to bring the food back to Hung Fong (Why???) a refund was issued to my credit card for the full amount of our lunches. PLEASE be careful when eating here.

We come here 2 – 3 times a month for the lemon chicken special with crab rangoon. Foods always fresh and service quick! Love it

The best part of Hung Fong is the cheap prices. with that being said, you get exactly what you pay for. The establishment always feels a bit dirty from the moment you walk in, the service is terrible (so bad I’ve actually stopped dining in and just order take out now), but like I said, the prices are cheap. if you want Chinese and only have a lunch hour to fulfill your craving, Hung Fong is the place to go, but if you’re looking for good food with a good environment, Hung Fong is not the place.

Atmosphere was okay but the food was less than satisfying… for an authentic Chinese food place, I guess I expected better.

Okay. So. I came to Hong Fong Chinese Restaurant on a Wednesday during their Lunch rush. Now, I can understand why people love this place. There are people out there that love consistency and want to know what to expect and what to pay, and apparently this place has been doing the same thing for a VERY long time.
To start off with, It’s seems like your basic ol’ kitschy Chinese restaurant. There are a lot of things being sold, typical décor. Lunch specials. The works.
The first thing I noticed once I sat down at the table was that… they have… crackers…on the table. Saltine. Salad Crackers… I reviewed the menu, and no where on there did I ever FIND salad. I Was perplexed, intrigued, confused, tempted to take a cracker. So I did. And let me tell you, I’m glad I took that cracker. It was the best thing about my meal.
The prices at this place are CHEAP. Crazy cheap. If you have no taste buds and just want something to filly our stomach GO HERE. Because it. is. Cheap. All entrees on the lunch menu are below 8 dollars, and all of those said entrees come with an ICED TEA, FRIED RICE, AND RAGOONS/​EGGROLL. That is insane! It’s also kind of confusing. The menu, I mean. On the front of the menu they have 5 sections that are each priced differently depending on the entrée you get. I was a little disappointed when I first read the menu, because nothing on the cheapest are of the menu looked appetizing. (Once again, this place was not my choice, I went with a friend.) Then, I flipped the menu over. LUNCH SPECIALS! Daily ones! Today the Special was Lemon Chicken ($ 7.35) or Kung Pao Chicken ($ 5.85). Both came with Iced Tea, Fried Rice, and Won-​tons. Awesome. Kung Pao Chicken it was. BUT WAIT. Then there was ANOTHER section. This one had Chicken and Broccoli listed, and it was $ 5.85 and came with ICED TEA, FRIED RICE, AND WON-​TONS? What? So… what was the other thing? Not a Daily Lunch Special? Eh Whatever. Chicken and Broccoli it is! (My friend order Lemon Chicken.)
So we ordered, waited (not that long I might add, these people do know how to work a lunch rush!) and what was placed in front of me honestly disturbed me. The Chicken and Broccoli came in a… what can only be described as a Cream of Chicken Sauce. Very different from the brown sauce that i’m used to from most establishments. It wasn’t very flavorful either, very bland. It needed more salt, and soy sauce, (which I actually had trouble finding on the table because it was placed in a mustard/​ketchup style container). The Fried Rice was yellow, and it honestly reminded me more of Spanish rice than fried rice from a Chinese Restaurant. The won-​tons were okay. It’s hard to mess up a friend won-​ton piece though. I was glad in the end that the entrée came with rice, even though i didn’t eat the rice, it did serve as an adequate way to absorb the strange thick, creamy liquid the chicken came in. I could dab the liquid off the chicken, onto the rice, instead of having to wipe it off with a napkin or something, which have just been strange.
My friend ordered the lemon chicken. Which came with the rice and the won-​ton on the side, the sauce on the side, and the chicken fried and breaded on a separate plate. Get this. My friend, who wanted to come to a Chinese place didn’t touch the lemon sauce. All he ate was the chicken by itself. All he came there to get was FRIED CHICKEN. It was ridiculous.
In the end, they brought us the check, and fortune cookies. Which were also disappointing. I guess they got a discount on cookies by ordering Kung Fu Panda 3 themed cookies or something. The fortune I got was a joke. I mean literally. «What is black and white a red all over? A Panda eating Sweet and Sour Chicken.» THAT WAS MY FORTUNE. So like I said earlier, the Crackers were the best damn thing about this place, no wonder they have them on the tables.
If you are looking for something in a rush, and don’t care what it tastes like, you just need it to be cheap and filling, this place is great. If you want something good or if you have a really sensitive stomach, steer away. This place is not for you.

Good old school Chinese-​American food. Drove by it on my way home so I had to try it. Apparently they have a long history in SATX so…
My wife and I got the lemon chicken, general tso’s chicken, and bacon shrimp with egg rolls and hot Chinese oil. Everyone is right about the egg rolls and hot oil. That hot oil is the jam. Cooked down garlic and chilies and oil. Egg rolls were definitely some of the best I’ve had.
General Tso’s was real good too. Lemon chicken wasn’t as good as lots of people raved nor was the bacon shrimp.
All in all it was a lot of food and I’ll be back.

I love this place it’s so good! I’m usually a picky person when it comes to Chinese restaurants even more so since I’m not from San Antonio there are only a few Chinese that delivers on base to fort Sam and those few that do are really gross but I came across the restaurant on postmates and it was amazing! My first time I ordered sweet and sour chicken which tasted really good so I had to order another time which was sweet and sour pour with chicken and broccoli. The prices are very reasonable as well I would consider this my new go to for Chinese food I will be ordering again and highly recommend!

Sucked should have went to a buffet bitch ass waitress food so bland not what it used to be I’ve eaten there 3 times in a few months will NEVER GO BACK CLOSE YOUR DOORS no wonder there’s only two other people here at dinner time on a saturday sucks 75.00 down the drain!!!

We found our way here after looking for a quick bite before going to the Witte Museum. I got the chicken curry and fried rice, it was delicious! The waitress took time to tell me about the health benefits of curry and made sure to tell me to eat my veggies because she saw me eating the chicken and poking out the celery. It was full of flavor! This place is not fancy lol but it’s got a nice relaxed atmosphere! Will be stopping by again if I am in the neighborhood.

This place always has amazing food.
Whoever rates this below 5 *s needs to realize this is a LOCAL establishment that has been around for more then 20 years.
The building is old, the menus are torn, you may get a friendly or content waitress but the food is always amazing. LOL

First off the place is dirty. Should have left when we were given filthy menu’s.
Service was terrible. Food was subpar for a Chinese restaurant.
Don’t order the sweet and sour pork. Stale noodles. I could go on and on.
Honestly has to be the worst Chinese food establishment I’ve ever eaten in.
Owners should sell to someone who wants to run a decent place.

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. Food was disgusting. The rice was awful. To top it off there was a huge fly, like the kind around a dead body, flying around the entire place landing on people’s food before it even got to the table. Once was way more than enough for me.

«The Oldest Chinese Restaurant» in San Antonio. I do love me a historical establishment… unfortunately I did not love Hung Fong.
Establishment: Ample parking in rear during mid-​day 1:30 p.m. The building looked classic and antique from the outside which I really enjoyed. Once I walked in, I felt like I was in the food court of a flea market. We were seated in a booth and the décor and surroundings felt like a 1990’s Jim’s diner. I opened my utensils wrapped in a wet napkin and I had already began to feel sick.
Food and Service: The menu consisted of lunch specials which was reasonably priced. $ 5.95 for beef and broccoli? Score! The waitress seemed to be in a hurry the whole time she ‘served’ us (even though it was not busy). The sweet tea was on the verge of tasting like water with light sugar, and left a weird taste in my mouth. The beef and broccoli… not physically appealing when it was brought. The beef thinly sliced with about 5 pieces floating around and hiding behind the chunks of broccoli. The sauce was a weird texture of soupy, goopy, and salty. I could feel my stomach churn with each bite, but my manager was treating me to lunch and I was hungry, so chomp chomp. The rice was about the only item that tasted okay, as well as the greasy fried Rangoon. I ordered an egg roll on the side and it was awful. It tasted like when you smell moth balls and Windex mixed together (random I know, but that was what came to mind).
Overall: You get what you pay for! I would assume after 76 years of business, they would be experts in good food. In my honest and humble opinion, the food at Panda Express tastes fresher (that’s saying a lot) but definitely is equal in bland quality to this establishment.
The verdict: I do not recommend this place! Run for the hills!

Hung Fung restaurant is the oldest Chinese restaurant in San Antonio… yet it has mixed reviews because the quality of the experience never changes. When you walk in, there are etageres full of knock-​off jewelry, hair pins, toys, and all kinds of styles in purses on your way to the bathroom, or to pay up front. I love their art made of butterfly wings. If they updated their look, improved their food and had more charismatic waiters that worked for their tip maybe they’d get better reviews. The three stars is for good service, good food and cleanliness. Come here for good Chinese food that won’t disappoint!

I almost never give a 1 star review, but this place surely deserves it! The order was taken quickly and the food came out fast, but that is where the positives stop.
The lo mein was glop. The mushrooms tasted like out of a can, and the beef was as tough as leather. The other 2 dishes (sesame chicken and sweet and sour combo) were not stir fried, but deep fried! The sesame chicken was fried to within an inch of its life, with some soy sauce poured on top.
The worst was the sweet and sour combo. Everything had a thick batter and fried hard as a rock. The sauce was just a cup of the cheapest bottled stuff delivered in a plastic cup.
The worst Chinese food of my life. Awful!
