Lucy’s Cake Shop

My family only orders cakes from Lucy’s. Their Red Velvet cupcakes are delicious. Their Bavarian cream filling is also quite tasty. When I do have a craving for something sweet I like that I can drop by and pick up a few ready-​made cupcakes. On one occasion, I picked up a cake for work and upon opening the box to show me the art, the man, who I believe is one of the owners, noticed that the flowers were slightly squashed and immediately had them touched up in less than five minutes. I will continue to order my cakes from Lucy’s!

Ordered a cake for my sister’s baby shower, and with my brained scattered from organizing everything I forgot to pick up the cake. My fault completely!!! CLOSED ON SUNDAYS this nice older man called on sunday morning and said he would be in the shop a while. Something he didnt have to do, he saved the day!!! Thank you Lucy’s for employing such awesome people. Oh and the cake was awesome, not a single slice was left over.

We recently came to Lucy’s to order to cakes for a retirement/​birthday party and I have to say that they have done it again in being the best cake shop in San Antonio! I brought my copy of the cake I actually wanted and when I saw the cake I was so amazed how it came out, I won’t go anywhere else to order a cake. When I tasted it, it was like the cake was melting it my mouth. It is so moist. They can do almost any creation you want and they will give you the quote based on how much time and work the cake decorator is putting in. We got a lot of compliments and recommend to everyone in attendance at the party. Awesome job Lucy’s!

There’s a sign to form a line but never say anything to those that cut in front of you. So I left, not in the mood to argue on a special day.

Horrible, Horrible service and quality! I used to love Lucy’s but maybe that was because I was a young child and didn’t know the definition of quality. I ordered a cake for myself for my birthday and when I called, the lady I spoke with seemed pretty knowledgeable, so I didn’t really worry. I had ordered a Black Forest cake, which normally comes with Cherry filling on top and when asked if I wanted lattice (whip cream, no cherry) I said no, just cherry. Well, when my sister went to pick up the cake, there was NOTHING on top, other than flat whip cream. She called me and asked that I talk to the lady (same one who took my order) and when I explained what I was expecting, she told me it would be an additional $ 12 charge (I had already paid $ 50 in advance for a 2 layer that fed up to 8 people). I told her no, I’m not paying for your mistake and just had my sister bring it home. The cake was disgusting! Not only did it not come out as I had ordered but the cake itself was dry and tasteless. Needless to say, I have never ordered, nor will I ever order from them again!

Ordered the most amazing, delicious, super fresh German Chocolate cake for my Dads birthday! I highly recommend!

I would like to begin by saying that my family had been going to this bakery for almost my entire life. My mother purchased her wedding cake here and that was in 1978. We have never once had any issues with the cakes or ordering process. This review is strictly for my experience in a wedding cake tasting appointment. It began the moment we walked into the room for wedding cakes… we weren’t greeted. There was a woman sitting at a table in the back writing something, and she didn’t seem like she was interested in helping us. We had to greet her and Then she asked if she could help us. My fiancé and I had zero experience with this area, so I was hoping for someone who would be more polite and explain things. Everything got worse from there. We explained that we wanted to taste some sample cakes (because she didn’t ask) and she very curtly told us to sit down at the back table and she’d get them for us. She came back with only four small plastic containers with plastic lids and literally plopped them down in front of us and said «let me know if you have any questions», then continued writing. Well first of all, what kind of cakes are we tasting? An explanation would have been nice, but we had to ASK her what kind they were. She only gave us two kinds, a white and a chocolate, and they were NOT good. I have ordered Lucy’s many years and this was clearly not their best cake they were having us try. I also had to request any books with pictures of wedding cakes they had done, because she didn’t offer that either. At one point one of the bakers came in and the lady helping us asked her some of the questions we had about the grooms cake. The baker never made eye contact with us and she only spoke directly to the woman helping us. Every other sentence she spoke was either «no we can’t do that»
Or the added extra costs for doing everything. I felt it was extremely unprofessional to not at least greet us and answer questions by looking at us directly. Then she left, without acknowledging our presence once. The woman helping us seemed very annoyed to answer our questions, and also impatient we weren’t ready to place an order. My biggest problem with this experience was that the employees did not make us feel they wanted or needed our business, which was very sad. I was almost positive we’d order our wedding cake that day based on my family’s years and years of going to Lucy’s for all kinds of cakes. This visit was most definitely my last. The only reason I gave two stars was for previous cakes I ordered. I took off three because customer service is very important to me, no matter how good the product, and they definitely failed in this area on several levels.

I have never had a cake from here nor will I! My cake lady got sick at the last minute and couldn’t do it so I looked for good reviews… well y’all might have good cakes but BAD customer service. I’m a person who speaks kindly to others, I expect the same in return. I called sweet secrets and kind people very helpful and fresh flowers on the cake! I’m about taste but I’m also about customer service!

I ordered a cake, paid close to $ 70.00. Instead of custard filling, I got pineapple filling. We didn’t realize the error until we cut into the cake. When I called to complain, the manager told me they could refund $ 2.25. Really? Terrible customer service. There are far better cake shops in San Antonio. First and last time I ever order a cake from this place.

I tried Lucy’s on a recommendation of a friend at work who is a local. I’m originally from the North East and was hoping for what I consider a traditional bakery. I was a little disappointed. I’m not talking about quality just flavor. I’d say this is great if you like Mexican bakeries, i.e. frostings not too rich and cake not dense. If you’re looking for something with a little more French or Italian influence, for example, super creamy, sweet and heavy, this is not that place.
I tried a white cake with strawberry flavoring. The cake was moist enough but too light, almost like angel food cake but not that light. The strawberry flavoring was probably out of a tub, for the price I thought it’d blow an HEB cake out of the water — it did not.
I almost didn’t comment on service. They didn’t appear busy at the time, no customers in line, but I did have to wait several minutes before being served. I assume they were working on orders in the back. Someone was up front doing paperwork and I suppose that was more important at the time than reducing one customer’s wait time — it really wasn’t a problem for me but I suspect if they had more than three customers at one time you’d be waiting the better part of a ½ hour judging by my wait time to buy a ready made cake.
In summary, my search for a good NY style bakery is still on.

I’ve been meaning to take time to write my review. We had an important date to need a cake made. We checked lots of places and we finally were told this was the best place. Very busy and waited in line. I can say it’s a clean place and very popular. But it was very chaotic. No one was organized. I happen to hear what I found out to be the owner getting upset. I can imagine the frustration of being busy. They made the mistake and blamed us without hesitation. Horrible customer service when asked how to fix. No refund. We had to buy two cakes because it was an important day for us and we needed it. It was the worst cake we ate. Never will return. I don’t understand how this place is still open.
Driving 5 hours to go to a blessed celebration only to have two dry cakes, nicely decorated, be thrown away. We will not be returning. I wish I would have read all the reviews. Our cakes had to much frosting and the cakes were very dry. The ladies there were very rude once they were called out on their lack of communication. Blaming me and my family that we were in the wrong. I don’t understand how they have been in business so long. After sharing our experience we found out we were not the only ones who have had very similar experiences. I will never shop here again and I will share our experience with anyone that will listen.

I ordered a cake from Lucy’s for my husband birthday. He is a Dallas Cowboys fan so I wanted a cake with some kind of Cowboys design. I walked in and was immediately help by a young lady. I simply said do you have any Dallas Cowboys pictures? She pulled up a Dallas Cowboys emblem and said Yes! The design of the cake was awesome! I had about 20 guest at my home and still had more to spare. I paid $ 62 which was great to me because another bakery wanted to charged me $ 80. Red Velvet cake was good and when told everyone where I got it from, they simply replied, Great Choice! Thanks Lucy’s you’ve gained a new customer!

I have always come here for cakes and they do a great job of putting various themes. I have always been pleased with the taste of the cakes as well, and the prices are great in my opinion for the size of cake you can order. Today the girl I picked up my cake from was nice, however there was another lady working who was rude to the customer next to me. I almost wanted to tell her mam, your being rude but kept my mouth shut. She was frustrated and twisting what the lady said, makes me a little nervous if I ever had to order from her. Other than that I do recommend this place just make sure you don’t get the angry lady lol !!

My go-​to bakery for birthday cakes since moving here. Always the white cake with pineapple filling and whipped frosting. My kids love it. I always have to grab some carrot cake cupcakes when picking up my order. Very good cupcakes!

I called Lucy’s on a Monday asking for a two-​tier cake for Friday. They said as long as I placed the order my Wednesday they would be able to deliver. I must admit I was doubtful of them delivering a great cake on such short notice, but I was desperate. My daughter wanted a large Frozen cake and I had to keep my promise. Needless to say, Lucy’s went above and beyond my expectations. The cake was not only beautiful, it was delicious! An employee offered to carry it out to my vehicle and set it up in there as carefully as possible. Thank you so much for helping me keep my promise to my daughter! You will definitely become my go-​to place for cakes.

Ordered my cake day before Father’s Day, 5 hours prior to closing, placed Order over phone, pre paid, they saved my ass. Tad pricey paid $ 65.00, but great last minute rush. Looks amazing !!

As a consequence of this response, I have been back to Lucy’s numerous times, most recently for a custom birthday cake that got compliments from very particular people (please see the photo that I attached of the rainbow birthday cake). More importantly though, I feel that the service is a little better.

Everyone who works on Lackland knows that Lucy’s is *the* place to go for cakes. It’s the only bakery I ever use. Their buttercream icing is fantastic, as is their strawberry filling.
Lucy’s offers a wide variety of cakes that they can decorate to your specifications, or you can shop their large assortment of decorations to customize it yourself.
If you’re looking for a wedding cake, Lucy’s has a separate room with several displays and lots of books you can look through. They also offer tastings on Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Bold statement alert! Lucy’s Cake Shop is the best cake shop in San Antonio. Have I been to all the cakeries in San Antonio, nope but I’ve been to some fancy ones and some down home ones and they don’t come close when it comes to value and taste.
For starters, Lucy’s is cheap! For my birthday I (yes, I ordered my own cake) got a two-​layer, 9-​inch round chocolated cake with bavarian filling and buttercream frosting complete with roses for 12 bucks. You can get something like this at HEB but it’s not going to taste half this good. Also got my wedding cake from Lucy’s and as soon as I mentioned where the cake was from, a crowd started forming around it like it was some kind of celebrity.
I also like that the staff are really down-​to-​earth people and knowledgeable when it comes to complementary flavors and how much cake you’ll need for x amount of people.
