I decided to give Check Point’s UTM a try after reading Network World’s glowing reviews which praised it stating «The Check Point 640 UTM is the cheapest and most capable box — two things that usually don’t go together — and the most appropriate UTM device for the SMB marketplace. It has an appealing user interface, a lot of great security features, and is simple to manage and create new security rules. It also works well with mixed Mac/​Windows networks.»
After receiving it and setting it up, a few months in my WiFi speeds had significantly degraded until it reached a point where I could not keep my iOS devices on the network without them intermittently disconnecting. After some fanfare, I was able to get Check Point to replace it under RMA for a defective wireless card but this was only after they gave me quite a bit of a runaround.
When I received the new 640 unit and got it all setup, I noticed latency issues right away (which also plagued the other device too, but I had chalked it up to being contributed to the bad network card). Everything in my office runs off of a NAS so latency makes things lock up, crash and freeze unexpectedly which produces downtime for me.
I ended up investing a lot of money into boosting and upgrading my NAS Server infrastructure, figuring that maybe the NAS is the point of problem — seeing as the Check Point just got replaced.
After several tickets, I ultimately got fed up with Check Point because (unbeknownst to me), the «authorized» reseller I bought this Check Point from never transferred it out of their name and into mine. This meant that even though I was THE owner (had receipts and all) of the device, Check Point would ALWAYS give me the runaround on getting service tickets taken care of. Ironically enough, this was completely foolish on Check Point’s part because the major source of revenue on these UTM’s is NOT on the hardware, but rather on the end users renewing of the software blade subscriptions. In creating barriers between end-​user and support they willingly gave up a hefty profit because unbeknownst to them I had only purchased a year of all 10-​blades for the device, but had I liked it, I was going to purchase another 3 – 5 years (the device I have now is with a 3-​year subscription).
Fast forward and I ended up replacing the Check Point 640 and have now discovered that many of my network woes were tied directly to the Check Point 640. With the Check Point, my download speeds were 25.49 Mbps down and 5.41 Mbps up. When I replaced my Check Point 640, my speeds became 53.70 Mbps down and 5.49 Mbps up. Very similar configurations in terms of security settings. Connecting to a Check Point system at the Macy’s by my house also confirmed the same thing. The connectivity with full bars was so slow my LTE (with 2 – 3 bars of signal strength) was faster. In my case, I thought this may be tied to the Threat Protection blade, but even after disabling this and many of the other blades, there was little improvement (the speed test results previously shared was with all performance-​impacting blades turned off).
