History

Established in 1957.

San Clemente Veterinary Hospital was founded by Dr. Manclark. It was one of the first (if not the first) veterinary office in San Clemente. Through the years it has served marine mammals and wildlife as well as local pets.

The hospital was purchased by Dr. John Agostini in 1991. Dr Agostini is the former chief of staff of South Orange County’s Animal Urgent Care.

John A.

Business Owner

John was born and raised in San Francisco. His early love for animals lead him to seek a career in veterinary medicine at an early age. He attended undergratuate college at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (where he met his wife Jennifer who is from San Clemente), and recieved his doctorate degree in veterinary medicine from UC Davis in 1984.

After graduation, John was admitted into an intensive surgical and critical care training program at Sacramento Animal Medical Group. His interest in this specialty brought him to southern California in 1986 when he became chief of staff of the South Orange County Animal Urgent Care Canter in Mission Viejo. He remained in this position until purchasing San Clemente Veterinary Hospital in 1991.

John has 4 chidren and is married to Jennifer. The family is active in outdoor sports including surfing, windsurfing, motocross racing, horseback riding, and cycling. His current hobbies include vocal and guitar as well as beer brewing and gardening.

Let’s just say our puppy, Nalu LOVES coming here and so do we. They have given us too notch care since day one, when we brought her in at 8 weeks old when we rescued her. She had some issues to clear up & they have been there for us for every first time puppy parent question we had. They give us their 100% attention, never rushing us during a visit. Each person that works there, gives her such love each time were there. We’ve seen them for vet visits and also have boarded her there twice now. Nalu & her parents love SC Vet!

I initialy wrote a two star review due to lack of follow up and communication regarding my sick dog and my first visit. I emailed the vet office afer my review and re told my story and voiced my frustration. The next morning I received a call and apology from the owner and veternarian Dr. Agostini. He asked if I was willing to come back in and receive a recheck of my pet personally from him.
I found this really nice especially since he was dealing with his own sick pet and could not leave his own practice to go deal with it.
I was very happy with the level of professionalism he showed me and the extra steps he took in trying to correct an error that may of occured in communication with his office. My dog was still sick after my first visit on Tuesday it was now Friday. It was discovered after meeting with Dr. Agostini my dog has an enflamed gallbladder. Luckily now, we have the correct path of treatment and she can be on the road to getting better. I was not charged for the second visit which I found very nice especially since an ultra sound was conducted. Dr. Agostini really went the extra mile and his staff to turn a bad experience around for me and show me The San Clemente Vet practice is professional and is one you can trust to take your loved pets to.
The initial dr. That I visited the first time even took the time to call my home and apologize for any miscommunication and not getting back to me more timely with lab results and said was happy my dog had a good recovery plan in place. That was a cool thing to do!

Let me start this 5 star review by saying that this was a horrible visit. Our dog, Lucy, became symptomatic overnight. While I ran back East my husband brought her here because they were the only vet he could find in the area that was open late that one crappy night.
He was told by the vet that she had a large, immovable growth on the inside of her pelvic bone. Worst case scenario. Maybe a debulking was possible but it would have been a Band-​Aid on a bullet hole, as the saying goes. While there, the owner and main vet came in (he wasn’t working at the time) and said he was just informed of her condition and could he examine her. Of course my husband was thankful for the second opinion. Still, it was the same bad news.
Fast forward through the week of having the kids visit to say tearful goodbyes and a few special ‘last meals.’ We showed up late for our appointment to end her suffering last night and they never blinked an eye. A room was ready for us. Everyone was kind, patient, loving, and apologetic.
Our family lost a wonderful member last night but SC Vet Hospital gave her, and us, kindness and dignity. Thank you.

All of the staff have been patient and wonderful with my overzealous husky. I’ve seen three of the different veterinarians that work here, and they have all been very knowledgeable. Military discount is a plus!

Dr. Agostini and his staff are just great. They always take care of us every time we go in there and that’s been well over a hundred office visits and still counting!
Without them, we wouldn’t have two out of our three dogs, so we really appreciate DR A’s experience and knowledge. Give them a try, you won’t be disappointed.

Our sweet Layla girl (Female Boxer) has had diarrhea, weight loss, hair loss and has been sick, finally we took her in and they determined that she had 2 parasites. She is on the road to recovery! The customer service was amazing, Dr. Habekost was awesome, caring and thorough. THANK YOU SC VET!

If I could give 100 stars I would. This place is by far the best veterinarian offices I’ve been to. The staff is so beyond professional, knowledgable, sweet and efficient. They made me feel right at home, handed my daughter a basket of toys to play with while we waited and a coloring book with crayons. I’m telling you It was almost unreal… this place just really showed me the meaning of truly caring.
My cat was in a bad fight and I took him in and I wish I didn’t wait as long as I did — I feel awful saying the reason was because I didn’t want to be hit with a huge bill like I have been in the past. But this place didn’t take advantage of me at all. They were very upfront of what they needed to do nothing was questionable it was all reasonable I’ve never felt better about a dr telling me they needed to do this and that and this for X and y reasons. And I’m so happy to say my cat is back & alive and were so happy he’s home and healthy :) we love you guys — will be back with all our animals!

I love this place for many reasons! The first time we came here was when my moms shihtzu was vomiting and having extreme diarrhea. We called our usual vet at the time and they told us we’d have to wait until the next day, or we could bring him in for $ 40 and they can kennel him, in case there was any availability. Umm, no sorry we’re not putting our sick dog in a kennel on the off chance there’s any availability! We looked online and found SC vet, who said to bring him in right away. It turned out that he needed IV medications and to be kept overnight. They told us that his situation was very severe and it was good that he got medication/​fluids. (turns out he got food poisoning from a bag of dog food that had been recalled and we were unaware).
The vibe was amazing there, and we have never taken our pets elsewhere. They were so friendly, accommodating, and understanding.
A year or so later, I adopted a pug puppy. She was in terrible care and was essentially abandoned at 6 weeks. The day I got her, I called for an appointment. When she went in, they got her all taken care of and are so sweet to her! She is a happy, healthy pup now and I am so grateful for all their help.
Lastly, we have a kitty who only has one eye, and the space for where the other eye should be is always infected. We have taken her to several vets who have said to just keep it clean and she would be fine. The problem is that we DO keep it clean! We wipe her off with a warm, clean washcloth two times a day. We brought the kitty here, and they gave her something to clear it up, and her eyes had never looked better! Her good eye was bright and clean, and her empty socket was clean and dry. She must have felt better too, because she was extremely playful and happy.
I can say that all of our pets are happy and healthy and do not have any reservations about visiting the vet!

I came in frantically because my dog had ingested chocolate. They rushed him back and put me in a very clean and nice room. I was really worried and the staff helped me calm down. They wanted to run blood work in addition to enduring vomit and I politely declined. I will be back. I love that they are open seven days a week! Thank you Dr. Allison Habekost! She was super sweet and understanding. I really appreciate it.

Horrible experience, office staff is rude. They tried to lie about their policies. Brought dogs in for a nail trimming and was told the first office visit was free. Brought in my dog and they told me it was not valid because i had been there before. Office staff argued with me and made me feel bad. Cancelled my follow up appointment, and i will never go back again. Very rude and unpleasant experience.

Fantastic! Dr. Habakost and the staff are amazing! Dr. Habakost is very hands on and calls you with each update. She and the team make you feel understood, welcome and up to speed. I love the personalized pet care. The team also love your pet, they are efficient, and really friendly! You can tell everyone in the office loves their job – from the front desk staff to the tech team, it is a winning combo! Great atmosphere. Super positive experience.

I run a 501©(3) animal charity in Los Angeles, which is loaded with veterinarians, but go to Dr Agostini — nearly 90 miles each way — when we have a critical, chronic or difficult case.
Dr A has LITERALLY saved the life of one dog with a persistent and large cancerous tumor. Dr Jackie Heller aided in these surgeries and provided critical follow-​up care. The night of one given surgery, I got a genuine and invaluable call from another vet with whom they work because he provides the overnight care to patients in critical condition. The level of attentiveness with this group is simply exception. And when we continued the care with an oncologist, they referred me to an equally attentive Dr David Heller.
Dr Agostini also is an outstanding orthopedic surgeon who is developing a special surgery for ACL patients, and I have seen exceptional results in numerous patients operated upon by Dr A.
Lastly, I have been in upward of perhaps 100 vet hospitals. SC Vet ranks #1 in my book facility-​wise, and the staff is consistent, attentive and caring. And of the utmost importance, Dr Agostini is a GREAT communicator. He listens attentively, explains in a way you can understand and advocates genuinely.
If I lived closer, this would be my «go to» hospital. But since I don’t, it is where this animal charity founder goes — and refers others to — when we have a serious, chronic or monumental case.

We live in Dana Point but were temporarily staying with my parents in San Clemente when one of our cats mysteriously hurt his leg. We called several Vets, all of which said they were too busy and to bring him in the next day. SC Vet was the only one who, although they were really busy that day as well, took the potential severity of his injury into consideration, and told me to bring him in right away. Come to find out, our cat fractured the ball part of his leg that fits into the hip pocket. Can you imagine going another day with that kind of injury?!
The staff at SC Vet was visibly upset at the pain he was going through. Although the diagnosis and procedure was expensive, everyone there was friendly, patient, and understanding of our situation. Our cat is now in the middle of a six month recovery process, limping around the house and each time we take him back for a checkup the staff is just as friendly, personable, and down to earth.
Unfortunately we had to take the same cat back for a separate issue today but it’s good to know we have a vet hospital that we can count on.

I can’t believe I waited this long to write a review! I took my cat, Mr. Man here when he had an abscess on his neck after getting hurt and infected. My old vet wanted to overcharge me, I was really relieved when Dr. A only charged $ 100. He even let me watch, which I thought was cool… maybe not everyone would haha. I immediately made Dr. A and AC Vet my primary and only vet that I would go to!
They really care about your pets here rather than they money. When Dr. A noticed something unusual about my cat he did a free cat scan to see what he could fine. Sadly it was a form of cancer. Dr. A did everything he could to help Mr. Man with the budget I had. When I made the tough decision to let my buddy go and rest in peace the whole staff was understanding and caring. They made sure I knew how much they loved Mr. Man. He was a very sweet and outgoing cat, the staff adorned him! They even sent me a card in the mail after, which was very thoughtful.
I plan to take my pup and two other cats here soon to see Dr. A and the rest of the amazing staff!
