AAMCO Transmissions & Total Car Care

My car was having all kinds of problems. It kept shutting off while in idle, and shook like crazy when I drove. I went to Aamco, and they not only fixed my car, but explained everything to me. Tyler Quirk is who worked on my car. He didn’t try to fix a bunch of stuff that didn’t need it, and he didn’t OVERCHARGE! The guys at Aamco have always been reliable. John is always cordial and nice on the phone. He let me drop my car off with out being there and they fixed it pronto. They are so fair and honest, what a guy!
Each time I’ve left Aamco, I haven’t had to return for quite some time because they get the job done. Thanks a million!

Their business model is flawed and is targeted to the uninformed with access to $ 1k-​$ 4k. I had one of my vehicles brought here as it was having transmission problems. Before bringing it in I had the ECU codes pulled off the engine that gave the codes for the 2 issues the transmission was having. When the vehicle was dropped off the Manager John had told us that the diagnosis was no cost. The next day I had called to see what they had discovered and I was told that the transmission needed to be rebuilt. I asked them how did they know that and John told me they test drove the car, then I asked them if they pulled the codes from the ECU and John told me they did, but there was only a code for the ignition, which I knew was a lie. He then went on to tell me that they needed to pull the transmission open it up to see what was wrong so they could clean it out and rebuild it. The cost $ 895.00. So essentially they were looking to charge almost $ 1k to diagnose the transmission. The problem with this business model is that once they pull your transmission and open it up, you are committed from that point on to them. They could open it up and tell you whatever they wanted to, and at that point you have no choice but to let them finish the work, otherwise known as «Got you by the Balls.» I asked over and over and over what price range could it be once they opened it up and was never given a straight answer. I asked if they had worked on this model of car before and what was the average cost of repair and was never giver a straight answer, or any answer for that matter. The good news is that the initial 1k to pull the transmission goes towards parts and labor of what needed to be done, but there were too many variables, and they were to «Sales’y» for my liking to move forward with service. I can not speak to their level of work, but as far as business models go, it is extremely one-​sided to their advantage. I would use extreme caution before moving forward with them, make sure you shop around and try to find out exactly what your car needs before committing. I hope this review finds them well, and improves their system. I would recommend that they give potential customers an approximate price range of what the service will cost, not just: well its 1k to get going and we’ll let you know what happens from there. They should say: hey it cost 1k to inspect it, the worst case scenario is 3.5k, but we worked on a similar model and they typically get repaired at 2k… as I said, proceed with caution!!! I ended up taking my car to a shop which ironically had a former employee of theirs working who brought me up to speed with how they work, and the commission they earn. 1-​star for having a organized operation 2-​stars for being responsive.

I don’t know if everyone dreads any kind of work being performed on your car like i do, but the guys at this aamco location made it super easy. Great customer service, quick turnaround and half the price of the dealership. Great Job guys, highly recommend.

Unilocal took down my review of this shop, which completely defeats the purpose of having a website like Unilocal in the first place. You find a good establishment that is struggling to improve their internet reputation, you make efforts to make that happen, and then Unilocal takes down your review. That’s crap. These guys do good, honest work, and I will continue to give them my money.

After I posted my review, I got two voice messages from the owner, Sam, asking me to call him back about the review. I thought at that point that either 1) he was going to apologize about what happened and then let me make the decision as to whether I wanted to revise my review accordingly or 2) he would try to get me to take down my review (as though the whole experience never happened). Unfortunately, he went with route #2.
When I called him back, Sam didn’t really dispute any of the facts as I described them, but he said, «What can I do to get you to take down your review?» If he wants to dispute anything I wrote, he could write a response on Unilocal.I told him that I thought I gave a fair assessment of what happened, and I recognize that he did fix the shifter button. But, them fixing something they broke after fighting me about it doesn’t exactly mean great service to me. I couldn’t give them higher than a 3, and I wasn’t going to just take down the review. I told Sam that since I really wanted to give them a 2 ½, I could change it to a 3. He said, «That doesn’t do anything for me.»
Then, Sam asked me if I needed any other work done on my car. I explained that I didn’t post the review to get free stuff; I did it because I had an unpleasant experience. He said that he would fix my brakes for free. He pressed on and on. When I didn’t take down the review, he called a third time. Things are getting really weird. I kinda feel like I have a jealous ex-​girlfriend. Sam, I would appreciate it if you stop calling.

I bring my car to AAMCO for all my car repairs. Tyler is their lead technician and is extremely knowledgeable! Prices are fair, work is done well, I’ve only had great experiences!

Not good at all. The quality: ended up taking the car back a month after rebuilding the transmission because of two major transmission fluid leaks. For one, the seal they used was defective, and for the other, bolts were not properly tightened. The price: started decent ($ 1500) and by the time they were done it was double … and that’s without anything unexpected wrong. The time: supposed to be 3 days … turned into 2 weeks. We ended up getting national office involved … without any real benefit. The kicker … after the second repair, more things going wrong. Been through car repairs for 40 years, sometimes doing them myself. Aamco’s answer is that at least we have a 12 month warranty — cold comfort. Aamco is to be avoided …

Definitely recommend. Sam is a lifesaver! I brought my car to toyota 3 times and they «couldn’t find anythung wrong» with my transmission. I called Sam, he helped me get all set up to bring the car in on the weekend and set me up with a rental car. John was extremely instrumental in getting the problem diagnosed and fixed ASAP, and fought toyota for me!!!

So my car has been making a intermittent whining sound when I would give it gas in park, reverse, or from a stop. After the car would go the sound went away. I took it to my friend who’s an excellent mechanic and always works on my car and he said he couldn’t pin point it but it sounds like it was coming from the tranny and to take to Aamco for a free inspection. On my way home from my friend’s I thought I felt some «Delayed Engagement” going from park to drive so I was like Ok Im def going to Aamco tomorrow morning. I call Aamco at 8:30am the following day and spoke with the owner Sam. Sam says can you bring it in at 9am? I said I could be there at 9:30am. Upon arrival I noticed all their lifts were full. I was told it would be 2 hrs before they could do the inspection. Ok I say and waited with my GF. Guess what? 2 hour wait just for them to do a test drive. After the test drive their mechanic says «I didn’t feel any Delayed engagement but I can hear a whining sound and it may be the tranny pump. We’ll have to get it on the lift to see for sure.» How long will that be? I asked. Give us till 2−3pm they say. Seriously!!! Keep in mind, I have no ride back to my house so my GF and I hoofed it to the trolley and took the trolley and bus home. At 1:30pm, John the General Manager calls and says «They think it’s the pump and it’s definitely a internal tranny issue and it will be $ 895.00 just to pull the tranny and disassemble it to be sure.» So you’re saying that it’s $ 895 basically to tell me what’s wrong on the inside and anything after that will be an additional cost I asked. «Yes» they say and that an «average rebuilt tranny for my car runs in the 2k range.» At first they didn’t even want to quote an average Tranny rebuild cost and said it was «against the law» for them to do that. After telling them that I only wanted to know to make an educated decision on whether to buy a new car or go ahead with the repair and that I wasn’t going to hold them to any «average quote,» they went ahead and said it would be around 2k. I told them that I couldn’t afford to do it and that if it came out to be 2k to fix, that 2k would be a nice down payment on a new car. They tried so hard to close me on the deal saying «my car would last another 7 years, a new car equals a new car payment, they offer a great warranty, and to go ahead and leave the car and they’d have it fixed by the time I got back from going out of town next week.» They didn’t even bother to drop the pan and check the gasket which I read could be clogged and causing the pump to whine. Instead, they just went for the jugular and tried getting me to rebuild the tranny right off the back. Needless to say, I didn’t go through with it. Just bought a new car which I feel was the better decision.

I am very please with John the Manager and Lenny the Mechanic who gave me a great customer service regarding my transmission visit. The level of knowledge from the mechanic to the manager are very impressive they will walk you through the process of how they come up with a plan how they will solve the vehicle issue. Very honest and friendly in nature highly recommend for Transmission problem on your car. Keep up the good work!!!

Nice guys and fast. Just went in and had my trams fluid changed, but I think they may be my new maintenance company. Had a great conversation about future work.

John took great care of me when I brought my car in because my check engine light was on. I don’t know anything about cars, besides if the light comes on something is wrong. He was extremely helpful and called the Honda dealer because he thought the issue might be covered under warranty and it was. When I went to get my car later that evening he had already called the Honda dealer and got me set up with a guy who would fix it for me. The part that was broken costs 2,000 plus dollars, I would have never known it was covered under my warranty if he wouldn’t have told me. I really appreciated his honesty and help! Being from out of state it’s nice to have finally found a mechanic I can trust. Thank you very much!!!’

This is a story with a happy ending… hear me out. One year ago brought my car in for a transmission issue. I figured I can get a quote or estimate but next think I know is I was out $ 4000.00! I won’t go into details but It was pretty much a horrible experience. So much so that it made me Unilocal review them to try to prevent other people from going there. ($ 4000.00 huge lesson learned.) I was supposed to go in a few months later but didn’t want to ever go there again.
A few weeks ago I received a call from John Smith, the new manager. Basically, he wanted to right a wrong. He and the owner ask if I would allow them to work on my car and fix anything that may be wrong with it (whatever it may be) to make up for my bad experience last year. They told me the old manager has been terminated. I’m sorry, but people don’t do this in this day and age. So, I brought it in, they rented me a car and fixed the problems I was currently having. Which by the was had nothing to do with the transmission. You may be thinking they contacted me only because of my negative Unilocal but I’ve Unilocaled other businesses before and never had anyone turn it around like this. I am really really impressed by these guys. I’ve been telling everyone and I had to come and tell this story on Unilocal.I suggest you give them a try!

I truly think my experience was not typical, but the act of an individual. The manager called me soon after I posted my review to personally offer me his apology and asked that I come in for another try. I had it in today for a free transmission service and a check on a vibration issue which was believed to be from broken motor mounts that I will need to get fixed. I was given the VIP treatment and appreciated his gesture to make things right.

These guys were awesome. I drive a 2003 Hyundai Accent, and since I got it from an auction and it came down from Canada, my car had a serious issue from the exhaust system, and one of my friends recommended their downtown location. This was a little closer to home so I went. They fixed my car in 24 hours, gave it an oil change, and walked me outside to «see the expression on my face when I started it». Pure bliss! The noise was gone! Definitely going back. They even threw in another oil change in the future!

Broke down 150 miles away and couldn’t decide where to bring my truck to. Needed somewhere to tow it so I chose AAMCO. It was a holiday weekend and I took a gamble leaving it parked outside on the street till they opened two days later. I show up close to opening and Andre is fast to assist with getting my truck assessed and on their lot. Class A service through the whole process. My tranny was smoked and within a small conversation Andre knew I needed to beef up my tranny. He offered two quotes, one with normal parts and one with what I needed. Naturally I chose to beef it up. Within days they had my truck back on the road for a reasonable price with a great warranty. I will definitely be going back to this AAMCO when services beyond my repair are required on my truck! Thanks again!

The guys at this Aamco are great. I have been to this location twice now for some pretty big repairs, and the manager, Andre, has gone out of his way to help make the process less painful. Their great customer service and fair prices definitely have made me a repeat customer.

Thanks for being the worst ! Completely misrepresented the work, completion date and price.
Update:
On 1÷24÷14 I received a call from John Smith who is the new manager of Aamco. John explained to me that the previous management structure had been replaced and the company was going to focus on customer service and professional integrity. John followed up with an unsolicited refund check and personal letter reiterating
his intentions. I believe this outfit is on a good path to turn around the misdeeds of the previous management team.

These guys are my saviors!
I had some pretty extreme circumstances with my ’02 Ford Focus, and Andre and his staff did a magnificent job working with me and getting me back on the road. If I move to another part of the city that’s maybe an hour drive away, I have NO PROBLEMS making the trip down to diagnose any future problems with my car.
If I could rate higher than 5 stars, I would because what they did for me was just that great.
