History

Established in 2013.

After their careers in the US Army, Patrick and MaryJo Abney took a chance to fulfill their dreams to be business owners. Patrick Abney has been doing magic since he was a kid and started doing Kids Magic Entertainment across the greater San Diego in the fall of 2013. Opportunity sprung for a chance to open a Magic Shop in Old Town San Diego, so in November 2013, they opened the Old Town Magic Cart. It was a cute and quant cart that sold a variety of magic and gags. In May 2014, Patrick and MaryJo took a big leap in their business, closing the cart and opening the Abney’s Magic Shop.

Still located in beautiful Old Town San Diego, the veteran owned and operated Magic Shop has a variety of Magic; Gags; the largest collection of custom Playing Cards in San Diego; a conjuring corner with tarot cards, pendulums, mystery wands and more; kendamas and wooden novelty toys; face painting supplies and services; magicians ready to demo our magic; and magicians for hire!

Patrick and MaryJo A.

Business Owner

Patrick Abney traveled throughout his childhood but claims Los Angeles, CA as home. He joined the US Air Force in 1981 and served for five years at which time he transitioned to the New Mexico National Guard. After receiving a Bachelors Degree, he commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army where he retired as a Major in 2003. After retirement, he was a JROTC Senior Army Instructor at North High School in Torrance, CA; Chapin High School in El Paso, TX and Vilseck High School in Vilseck, Germany. In 2006, Patrick married MaryJo Abney who at that time was an Army Officer. Together they have two kids and Patrick has three kids from a previous marriage.

After MaryJo got out of the Army in 2013, they started their business adventure opening a Magic Shop in Old Town and Kids Magic Entertainment services for the greater San Diego. Together with Patrick’s boys, Gaelan and Brendon – professional magicians with specialty in close up magic – they proudly run Abney’s Magic Shop.

Was in here yesterday with my wife and grandkids. we looked around and liked what we saw. We should have made a purchase but alas…We where very impressed by the young man working there as he took the time to show my kids a few magic tricks, he was very nice and patient and we will be back to buy some MAGIC !

Cannot say enough good things about this place. The amount of time taken to show my son (high functioning autistic) how to perform a couple different tricks and how to properly use a deck of cards was really refreshing. Good people here. If you (or your children) are into magic, this is the place to go.

This little store is really small and hot inside. It has cool stuff. But some of the stuff has been sitting there for a while that the batteries on some of the items are dead or are gonna die out loll. The stuff is exspensive in here too

We just stopped to by to check the shop out and were welcomed by the lovely owners who shared tons of tricks (and even told us how a few worked). This is one of the coolest specialty shops we’ve been to and the customer service was beyond any we’ve received. Great people! Great store!

I am a part-​time professional magician and Abney’s is my local magic shop. Great staff, well stocked, tons of REAL secrets (books, DVDs) and helpful encouragement. This is not a joke shop; this is where you go to get the supplies needed to learn magic and make miracles happen.

My boyfriend and I took our first trip to San Diego not too many days ago, and we were not allowed to come in. Why? I have no idea. It was confusing, not to mention disheartening. I have to be honest and say that this incident tainted our experience so I’m not sure that we’ll be returning to the area any time soon.

Never in my life have I had to deal with the absurdity that I had to deal at this place. My girlfriend and I took our first trip to San Diego and upon arriving we saw signs for a magic shop. We were both interested so we parked and approached to find one of the workers/​manager? standing out front. We said Hello and were answered by «we got a call from another business and you are not welcome here.» We were confused by this rude greeting and tried to explain that he was mistaken and that we had just arrived. The man told us that he would not explain why he wouldnt allow us into the store but that we were simply not welcome. So much for a warm welcome to San Diego. So if you like a business that profiles people and picks and chooses who their customers will be, by all means visit this hack magic shop. I am disgusted by this behavior and will never return to this place.

Cool little magic shop in Old Town across from Harney Sushi. We were here to get a kendama for my daughter, and they had a nice assortment of colors and styles. She opted for a jumbo bright pink one. Currently 10% off during Kendama. Rama!
They no longer have magic shows, but they do hold magic workshops for $ 30/​person; save $ 5/​person if you bring a friend. Just call in advance to schedule.

My 6 year old recently decided he wanted to be a magician. He loves this shop. We’ve been there twice and both time each of the clerk/​magician behind the counter were very nice. They showed my son a couple tricks and talked to him like he was a fellow magician. They had the pro items as well as simple kids that kids can do.
Was not able to see a show but definitely will try to catch one soon.

My 8 year old niece and I were in San Diego on vacation. She had an interest in magic so I promised her a trip to the magic shop. We were so lucky to find Abney’s Magic Shop! Pat and MaryJo were patient and helpful. Pat taught my niece two tricks and encouraged her to practice and come back with any questions. My niece would have gone back every day! We did go back once and MaryJo patiently helped her fine tune her act. We also found out they run a magic camp for kids. We will definitely be back next year if not one more time before we leave.

Great family business, with extraordinary attention to their customers. Truly a family affair, as over the course of only two visits we have met the proprietors and their sons.
We expect to be regular customers and have already placed a custom order for rare cards.
