Aerial Revolution

Prior to my first class, I never had a consistent work-​out routine, could not do a push up, or a proper crunch or a pull up. I bought the groupon for ten-​classes because I was desperate to find new hobby that would meet all my personal goals: 1) build a fitness program that involves balance, flexibility, and strength and 2) have a place for release (so that I don’t take my frustrations out on people I care about).
I was pretty nervous going into my first class but so excited too. I took Silk 1 which is open to first-​timers. In retrospect, I’m very thankful there were many other newcomers because I think the instructor focus a lot more on conditioning despite there being huge range of skill level in the class that day. She still challenged the experienced returners while instructing us newcomers on the basics of foot ties and inverting. The instructor, Susan, was very attentive and provided a lot of knowledge about which muscles needed strength to do certain maneuvers. When I was done with the class, I felt so accomplished even though I wasn’t able to do many of the tricks completely. I was sore for the next three days… in parts of my body that I didn’t know we’re even muscles or that could get sore (fingers, between shoulder blades, etc).
That first class was affirming in that the 70 $ I spent on groupon for the 10-​class package was the best-​spent 70 $ of my life. It really has changed my life as now I’m fitting in a tiny workout routine into every morning to prepare for the next class. I’m really excited about these classes because it’s rewarding to see all the hard work you do throughout the week pay off in aerial silks. You get to say «look what I can do this week that I couldn’t do last week». I walk away from most classes with a clear understanding of specific muscles that need strengthening for specific tricks and the instructors tell you this freely. This is incredibly helpful because it informs what I do in my own home workouts.
The staff is super friendly and the instructors are always very positive and all have wonderful personalities and most of them have awesome senses of humor. the people who come to silks are wonderful too: very supportive whether it’s your first time getting upside down or if it’s your first time doing a mind-​bending trick.
I’ve mostly gone to Silk1 and Intro to silks, but I have also dabbled in ‘aerialates’ and hand-​balancing, tumbling, and acroyoga. All were great. However i will say if you’re going to hand balancing and you’re a complete newcomer, mentally prepare yourself and be open to embarrassing yourself for the sake of learning. (it’s a bonus if you bring a friend so you can laugh at each other.) At least that’s what I wish I did because i have never done a cartwheel in the last 25 years and I took a hand balance class which happened to have no newcomers, in fact everyone was very experienced. I laughed at my grand cartwheel attempt in the middle of the class. While that was enjoyable I wish someone I knew saw it because it was so bad it was good. I don’t think the experienced balancers really could appreciate it as much.
TL;DR: GO! It will change your life. You will have fun, learn a lot, and meet cool people. DO IT!

I first came here toward the end of 2014 with my yoga teacher training class as a reward for completing our certification. The girl who ran my teacher training class had been taking aerial silks classes at Aerial Revolution for some time, and wanted us to experience a class firsthand. Before I walked in, I thought «this should be great, aerial yoga seems so relaxing and peaceful.» Little did I know aerial silks and aerial yoga are NOT the same thing.
Instead of having a peaceful yoga class where I got to hang out in a cocoon of silk for an hour, I got my butt kicked climbing up and down silks, tying my hands and feet, and attempting to hang from different body parts in a strange combo of bondage and contortion.
Next thing you know, I buy a groupon and start coming to silks classes once or twice a week and I’m hooked. Aerial cirque classes HURT but they hurt so good. I’m a fitness junkie so this gym scratched my «I want to sweat my butt off and have trouble moving tomorrow» itch. My muscle definition has gone from «toned» to «swole» since I started coming here. If you want to build upper body and core strength, I can’t think of a better way to work your muscles.
The instructors here are super patient, they are all about safety, and they are great about tailoring classes for all levels of experience. If you’re a first timer, and want to try a silks class, I recommend checking their schedule online and going to Tiffany’s silks 1 class. She’s very outgoing, funny, and welcoming to newcomers. If you’re worried you’ll feel completely inept trying such a graceful sport, well, you will. But the instructors will reassure you that everyone starts out looking like a potato trying to roll out of the potato sack for the first few classes. Stick with it and you’ll probably get addicted too!

Great place for beginners. The instructors help you feel welcome and teach you a lot. Great staff, good workout, and worth every penny.

I’ve been an on again-​off again student at aerial revolution for years, since they were located in the gym in Mira Mesa. This is a great studio with really fun teachers.
I’ve really been digging the acro yoga classes recently.
Do yourself a favor and give this place a shot.

Studio Revolution’s unique workouts are unlike anywhere else! They’re fun, social and so exhilarating. Their aerial silks class is my absolute favorite. Give them a try. You definitely won’t be disappointed.

I had decided to try out some aerial arts after watching some Cirque du Soleil performances — I think in particular Zumanity. Silks looked the most epic, dramatic, beautiful to me, so that’s what I set out to do! In the first class, they mainly taught the beginners how to do some basic climbs which was REALLY scary considering how scared of heights I was.
The teachers are really great, and it’s crazy how fast you can progress here. Most of the students I’ve met had only been going around ~6+ months and could do a ton of advanced tricks. I thought it was pretty inspiring to see a wide range of ages participating and really nailing it.
They offer student showcases a couple times a year to give students a chance to show off their progress to their friends/​families, and they have a few staff performance that seem pro-​level to me.
My most recent discovery was their acroyoga classes and I can’t wait to attend the acroyoga jams. Don’t be scared to try out any of the classes! Where there’s a will, there’s a way!

My friends and I tried one of the classes (beginners, I think) and it was quite a workout! I was very sore the next day!
The silks and trapeze were very fun but because of the larger-​than-​normal amount of people and overall level of experience (of us), the instructor seemed a little stressed and annoyed (and I don’t blame her!). Don’t get me wrong, I had a great time, but the class size seemed to take away from the experience.
Although smaller than I expected, Ariel Revolution made a great use of the space. The high ceilings and large open door made it fell bigger than it was!
I recommend taking advantage of their 5 classes for $ 45 deal while it lasts because Ariel is very fun.

I take aerial silk classes at UCSD already, but came across this groupon that offered 10 silk classes for $ 69! Considering that their usual drop in rate is $ 22, this was a steal. This place is basically a warehouse that’s been converted into a silks studio. It’s nothing fancy, but it definitely does the job. There are several instructors and different circus arts that you could learn. I tend to stick to the silk classes as that’s what I’m most comfortable with. I did take a lyra class, which was pretty fun, but my love will always belong to silks.
Their classes are not always at the most convenient times and so I can only maybe attend one or two at most, a week. Honestly though, I’m so sore after a class or two that I couldn’t successfully attend a third class even if I wanted to.
The only downside, aside from their pricing, is that some of the instructors do not always break down the moves as well as you’d like. Luckily, I had a little background experience, so it was a little easier to learn. If you find an instructor you like, stick with them. If anything, speak up and ask for more clarification on how to do something.
If you want to learn something cool and work out your upper body strength or flexibility, come here and try it. I’ve had friends who have tried silks and are hooked. Look out for groupon deals as they usually have something on there.

Began good went there many times until instructor decided that another student should take the class over and teach. Also be aware that you may book and then come to find out they have cancelled YOU or marked you as absent before even showing up to your class, I lost 3 classes this way.
the Gym has 3 parking spaces which are always taken, street parking is a nightmare.
Will not be returning as just today I was listed as absent from my class when it was 9 am, the class began at 10. Two weeks prior to this I was booked and they had cancelled my appointment without informing me.

I have been doing aerial yoga in the LA area for about a year now. I was in San Diego for vacation and decided to try out aerial silks at Studio Revolution/​Aerial Revolution… I’m a little confused by the multiple names and am not entirely sure what the place is called exactly. I took a couple Silk 1 classes with different instructors and it was overall a great experience and a good workout. If you haven’t tried aerial silks before, they are really no joke. It requires full-​body strength. I had to take a day or two off in between class days because I was pretty sore.
The class sizes varied on the days I went. They have about 10 silks I think, but some days there are more than 10 people in the class so you get less air time and you have to share silks. That is kind of a disappointment considering the classes are only an hour long. The instructors were all very helpful, but with the large class sizes it is difficult to get individual feedback. They are cognizant of the different levels within the classes though, which is nice.
The front desk was not always staffed when I went. It seemed like they didn’t really have a full-​time receptionist, which is an inconvenience and a little weird for a business of this sort in my opinion.
The location is okay, but parking is not necessarily easy. They only have a few spots in front of their actual building. The building itself was neither amazing nor terrible. It was very simple, no frills. They do not provide water or anything so bring your own for class.
I wish I could have tried the lyra/​trapeze classes, but alas my vacation came to an end. Overall if you’re looking to learn aerial silks and have a good idea of your own strength, I would recommend this class. If you’re a first-​timer and have really no idea what aerial silks is or anything like that, you might want to try a place with smaller class sizes.
The prices are cheaper here than anything I’ve found in the LA area.

Aerial Revolution has become like a second home to me, literally! I have seen a change in my physical abilities and made so many new friends through classes, rehearsals and performances. I am so happy to have found such a great place to work out, learn and socialize. Love Aerial Revolution!

Aerial revolution has some amazing teachers that instruct a wide range of classes.
Their shows are really fun to watch as well! I’ve met wonderful people within their facility and definitely been assisted in my training!

Aerial Revolution was part of the entertainment offered last Thursday night at the grand opening of the Broadstone apartment complex in Little Italy. I found it a very original way to engage the possible customers or simply the audience gathered by the posh pool and contemplate and admire the elasticity of these guys and girls very Cirque du Soleil style!
I liked the performances a lot, that were totally coordinated with the music offered. I did not know they offer classes, so I need to check that out (just happen to know now when I got ready to write a review). I think this type of entertainment bring us to the basics of childhood, when we (most of) all dreamed of traveling the world in a circus and performing arts and getting paid for it! Well, not everybody is that fit, so enjoy the candy for the eyes too! Will check out one of their classes and see what can I learn!

WOW WHAT A WORKOUT! I love this place and so glad I got a living social to try it out! I did the Silks 1 class first and oh owwwww! If you don’t have much upper body strength be prepared for every muscle in your upper torso to hurt like hell! But none-​the-​less I still loved it. But the Sunday Aerial Yoga class I’m in LOVE with! It’s 90 mins of sheer awesomeness with a solid work out and great stretch. The instructor is the best at explanation, example, support, personality, everything — I adore her and will ABSOLUTELY be back for her class. I can only make it every other week, but I totally look forward to it. As a runner, it feels fantastic to focus and challenge other muscles, stretch and increase flexibility. More simple stretch and flexibility would be nice… just no climbing with upper body — lol.

This studio is in a slightly sketchy part of town, and street parking can be crowded. It’s not a very pleasant space, with extremely cheap and ugly florescent lighting (like an office building) in a large warehouse space where it appears little effort has been made to make the place welcoming or hospitable.
The classes vary in quality. I’ve taken a sampling of silks, trapeze, aerial yoga and handbalancing here during my couple months’ stay in San Diego recently, but I don’t think I’ll be going back. I really thought Maringa was a great teacher, and Laura, but the others were pretty hit or miss. Most are the typical circus crowd in that they’re much more like performers than teachers and so don’t seem well-​trained in breaking down actual technique.
However, circus studios are hard to find and I don’t think there are many options in San Diego so it seems like the kind of place to just suck it up and go practice on your own sometimes, if you’re a motivated, self-​driven kind of person.
Biggest thing that makes it lose stars for me is overall lack of professionalism. The front desk seems to be staffed by an endlessly rotating series of people who jog between either taking classes themselves or managing the front desk and never know how the business systems work. The place is ugly as I mentioned, badly lit and seldom clean. When I walked in the other week, there was some shirtless dude getting a *massage* from his girlfriend on a crash pad in the front room. What the hell, are we in somebody’s house? Is the studio a spa now? The place is messy and classes are too full of people for proper supervision. I watched a beginner tie a foot-​tie wrong for the entire class period and no one ever noticed.

Hey, I’m always open for fun and different entertainment. I got an invitation to see Aerial Revolution’s Halloween and didn’t know what thing about this performance troupe. I kind of expected, I didn’t know what to expect and what I got was a very nice surprise.
The AR Halloween show was amazing. The performers swinging from a trapeze, a hoops, on the ground acrobatics and On drapes and straps hanging from the rafters. Overall, an amazing performance by super talented people.
The best part was when my friend was invited to join other guests on stage. She got chocolate pudding wiped in her face. Hilarious!
I’m going back for their next show and every Halloween show for sure!

I love this place! I had never heard of silks beforehand, but I came with a friend with a groupon. We had such a blast that I bought more sessions. The best thing is how easily the instructors are able to differentiate the lessons for students of varying levels. It’s truly impressive. I moved to DC and I cannot find anywhere that compares to here!

COOLEST PLACE IN SAN DIEGO EVER IN ALL TIME.
Highly recommend giving the lyra/​trapeze class a go… everyone wants to do the silks classes here so those classes crowd up really quickly and the amount of students in a class is much greater. Meanwhile, I absolutely loved that in lyra/​trapeze class, there were five students total (including me). I really felt like I got a lot more one-​on-​one support, attention and practice time on the equipment!
I was really surprised and happy by how many tricks are taught in one class. You learn a TON and you get the support you need to actually master much of it. In one class! You’ll be hanging upside down in the air, doing all kinds of inversions, trying all kinds of different in-​air poses and being braver than you thought you could be.
The aerial yoga class on Sunday mornings is also great. The silks in aerial yoga help to support you while you’re in deep stretches. That’s a nice first class to take, since it just gets you comfortable doing some exercises up off the ground without being as gnarly as the silks class or lyra/​trapeze class.
The instructors here are really awesome. Super helpful and nice. Same with the front desk staff! My lyra/​trapeze instructor originally began working for the circus when she was 13 and stayed with them for quite a few years. (She’s in her twenties now.) Now she performs at a lot of really well-​paying corporate events and teaches any student who shows up to Aerial Revolution with a bit of an adventurous streak and a solid desire to learn!
It’s $ 20 for drop-​in, or you can pay $ 30 for your first week of unlimited classes.

Just stumbled upon this place very recently and I love it! I have taken a variety of the classes: silks, aerial yoga, ballet, aerial flying, and yoga slacking. All the instructors I have worked with were very knowledgeable and helpful in their craft. I will definitely be coming back as often as I can.
