The Armed Services YMCA San Diego (ASYMCA) is the leading non-​profit in San Diego that makes military life easier for active duty service members and their families. Founded in 1920, its focus is to strengthen communities by providing support services and programs that promote individual and family bonding in ways that are relevant to the unique challenges of military life. ASYMCA services and programs are provided to active duty military and their dependents free of charge. The Armed Services YMCA San Diego is a national affiliate of the YMCA and partners with the YMCA of San Diego County.

History

Established in 1922.

During the Civil War, a group of local YMCA members voluntarily provided relief services to American Armed Forces in nearby encampments. Within seven months, the movement spread across the nation and the United States first large-​scale civilian volunteer service corps was born. This movements has lasted and grown through the decades. In 1984, the Armed Services YMCA was officially established and recognized as a part of the Department of Defense after years of support through the YMCA. Today, the Armed Services YMCA operates programs for young troops and their families at 33 branches and affiliates nationwide.

Meet the Manager

Tim N.

Manager

Prior to his new position, Tim was the COO of Feeding America San Diego. He is a San Diego native and proudly served for eight years in the United States Marine Corps at C Co. 1^st Blt 3^rd Marines, A Co. 3^rd Reconnaissance Battalion, and 1^st Force Reconnaissance Co. Tim has a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Chapman University, is Black Belt Lean Six Sigma certified from the University of California San Diego, and is currently enrolled in the Executive MBA program at San Diego State University with an expected graduation date of May 2014. Tim has a fundraising and operations background from his past positions as Director of Community Relations at the North County Community Services and Chief Operations officer of Feeding America San Diego.
