History

Established in 1974.

Owner Mary Pappas migrated at a young age from a tiny village in Greece to San Diego where she began helping her aunt who owned a tiny market in the Gaslamp District of San Diego. The market slowly became a restaurant as customers would enjoy eating their authentic Greek cuisine in the presents of Mary’s entertaining and hospitable personality. What was once a small market has now turned into a 200+ capacity restaurant in the elegant Marina District of downtown San Diego. For over 40 years Athens Market has been the best Greek restaurant in San Diego and one of local’s favorite places to dine. The Union Tribune calls it a landmark. Mary Pappas can still be found socializing around the restaurant and ensuring every customer get’s the royal treatment!
