Balboa Stadium

Watched my nephew’s flag football game. He plays for the Chargers team (ages 7 – 8) and today he played against the raiders lol. It’s the cutest thing to watch. I play flag football myself and watching them play is so cute and exciting.
These kids are really good. One day they will be professionals! Woo hoo!
This is a nice stadium. I love that it’s fake grass cause it maintains the cleanliness of the field. I walked onto the field with my niece and we sat on the grass not having to worry if its wet, etc. the rest of the family sat at the bleachers with their umbrellas lol to protect them from the sun.
It’s a nice field. Come watch my nephew and his team play every Saturday for the next 8 weeks!
It was a tie game! Chargers vs Raiders

As a football player at Riverside Community College, I remember playing San Diego City («the Knights») in Balboa Stadium in 1975. Three vivid memories: (1) the place was so empty of fans, you could hear the sound of the pre-​game punts echo from the stands, (2) every 45 seconds during the game, an airliner landing at Lindbergh flew out overhead at couldn’t bee more than 500 feet, which made huddling to call plays pretty useless, (3) losing badly to City after the biggest on-​field brawl I was witness to.

I play flag football at Balboa Stadium for the Flight Action Sports leagues. Not much to say about it but it is a nice TURF field to play in the day or under the lights!

This track is NOT open to the public. The only way you’re getting on is if your club has paid to rent the track.
It’s a really nice all-​weather surface. It’s a shame they won’t let locals use it.

Are there any other tracks you can use? For example a High School/​Middle School Track on the weekends? I will be moving to San Diego soon and want to make sure I don’t break any laws by running at a HS or MS track! Thanks!

Every time I’ve tried to go to this track it has been locked employees from the high school tells me I can not use it. I went once when the track club was there. I was able to run but was overwhelmed with the over 100 other runners.

I saw the reviews and wanted to try the track out. It was locked saturday morning! can someone drop me down with some more info? when is this place open?

The track is a little run down, but it’s well lit at night. You can even watch the soccer games in the middle of the field as you are running to help time pass. Don’t go on Tuesdays before 6:30pm– the track will be swarming with SDTC members now that marathon-​training season has started. Also, the planes fly really low around here, so it’s a trip watching them overhead as you are running. :-)

Balboa Stadium (and its track, in particular) has grown on me since I started running here for my speed workouts. San Diego High School uses this place for football and track & field, along with other groups like VAVi and the San Diego Track Club.
The turf field is a little on the worn side, but serviceable. The track surface isn’t as spongy as I’d like, but hey, there aren’t too many places I know of that are actually lit at night for running freaks like me, so it works.

I ran at Balboa stadium last Tuesday night. My mom told me that she went to a Chargers game there when she was pregnant with me in 1966. This was my first time back. I did not like the running surface they put down. Also, the carpet on the field is buckling here and there. The stadium is also close to a flight path for Lindbergh. It was interesting to actually see the space, but I do not feel the need to return. I parked at the hospital parking lot and walked over the pedestrian bridge that crosses the 5. That was kind of interesting walking over the freeway. I think the city is missing an opportunity by not pouring some money into this facility. The San Diego High School players have to change in what looks like a trailer. They should increase the seating and improve the facilities, including that field. They should sue whoever installed the turf.
